RB and WR depth/movement

This fall, Texas looks a little thin at receiver, at least in terms of proven depth. The starters would probably be Eagles, Epps, and Smith, who are all fine receivers. After that, I have no idea who'd get meaningful playing time, or step in for injuries.

Meanwhile, we look stacked at RB. Ingram should be solid, and with Whittington and Bijan Robinson coming in, the biggest problem will be getting them enough touches. Not to mention we have a QB who can run.

Is it possible Roschon Johnson moves to WR, similar to Heard? He might do well there, we could use the depth, and he appears willing to fill whatever role the team needs.

There was a thread earlier this season about the WR depth for 2020. Johnson has been too good at RB, and might take over as QB in 2021. I don't think Whittington has the frame or desire to make the switch either.

Assuming Moore is still kicked off the team, we will have the following depth:
    "Outside" receivers -
    Eagles
    Epps
    Woodard
    Washington
    Lewis
    Omeire

    "Inside" receivers -
    Smith
    Harrison
    Hullaby

So this is both problematic, but also an opportunity for people to step up. We're going to keep with the 11 personnel like NFL teams do for the most part. And since Herman has always been a huge fan of flexing out TEs (all of the TEs return for 2020), I assume they'll continue to be a huge part of the scheming, even if they don't get many catches. Liebrock and Wiley will earn more play time.

With truly no one to spell Smith at the slot, we'll see Harrison earn snaps as a jet sweep guy. I honestly believe we'll be fine on the outside. It'll be like 2007 after we lost Limas Sweed. Everyone else stepped up and Nate Jones came out of nowhere to lead the team in receptions. I expect that Eagles will be the "go-to" like Duvernay and CJ have been the past season. Epps will be the "toss it up and make him go for it" guy. But Smith will lead them all in receptions, while Washington and Woodard each nab about 20 catches.

    Some likely WR starters:

    1. Eagles
    2. Smith
    3. Washington
    4 Moore

Other possibilities include: Lewis and newcomers Omiere, Hullaby, and Harrison. Also, if we sign K. Dixon out of Carthage, TX, he might be good enough to get some playing time as a Freshman.

Epps is moving to TE--good call by Epps and the coaches there.

I recall reading somewhere on the net that Moore is back on the squad. This is good news as Moore is probably good enough to start and make some waves.

As will the speedy and large Lewis. Woodard looked fully healthy in the Alamo Bowl and was doing the right things when not targeted. He could be the next WR to emerge this Fall also.

Read the TFB open thread of the indictment of Mehringer and Meekins. The WR will make big strides from here on.

I was thinking the same thing about Jackson. He's not long for the QB world if Thompson/Johnson/Card are clogging up the depth chart in 2021.

The most obvious big stride to make as a unit: stop aimlessly loitering around after the first 4 seconds of their routes when the QB is scrambling for his life. I expect the new WR coach will demand that obvious improvement. Like 80-90% of WR groups in the game, we could also stand some improvement getting off the line.

We've got some WRs that do outstanding sideline work and have exceptional in-air body control. We also have some high jumpers and guys with wheels. The raw talent is there. Hopefully the coaching is now as well.

I wonder if Whittington prefers to be a rb or flanker? With Bijan coming in, we don't need both he and Roshon in the backfield. Long term NFL salary and longevity are both better at WR.

Whittington played WR in HS, so that’s no stretch. He is about the size of Jerry Rice. Just sayin’.

Herman timed Lewis 4.4 in 40 and he has been timed 10.6 in 100M.

Neither Eagles, Smith, Moore nor even Woodard "slow."

TFB has the excellent top 25 ratings.

Inside Texas has the Mehringer take down. It is quoted in full in one of these threads.

If there were Vegas odds on this as of today, I think the fav would be that he returns. But its not decided one way or the other yet.

Here is that quote -- I cant rmbr which of the IT guys wrote this

" .... Throughout the season I heard some criticisms of Drew Mehringer's coaching of wide receivers. What I heard was so bad it was hard to believe, effectively, he didn't teach the receivers how to beat press coverage. Not that he tried and couldn't get his teaching across....he didn't teach it at all. He would tell his big receivers to use their size and power advantage and that's it. Thinking back to Malcolm Epps' struggles getting off the line it all makes sense. I'm shook.

When the discussion turns to players not being developed, this is a prime example. I had this information confirmed this week as I received positive news on Coleman. With Mehringer they just worked on routes, and not very good ones, and drills they didn't seem to benefit from. Coleman immediately went to work on getting a good release and they saw immediate improvement.

Coleman's becoming a popular guy and should be a value add on the recruiting trail...."

Jake is certainly not slow. Neither is Moore. Washington is pretty fast as well. Lewis and some of the others aren’t too slow either. Epps—yeah, he’s slow for a WR, but he’s moving to TE.

Something else on Andre Coleman is that he had a 9 year NFL career before becoming a college coach

I’m very glad the new WR coach will likely improve our WRs getting off the line/release. That’s been a weak point.

Thanks JF. Not sure how I missed this. It certainly makes Mehringer look like a poor coach. Would explain some of the WR misses we've experienced. Also makes me wonder how much his new employer knew about him, and why he lasted here so long.
