Sooners appear to have eleven, nine of which are from their “D”. That seems to be a lot. Wonder if new DC is running them off. Or perhaps they are leaving in embarrassment after the a- -kicking from LSU.

New DC is running them off if they were not starters or huge contributors.

Sooners have three LB in portal, I think. I know there are two.

Even if they aren't starters, the Portal is wrecking havoc on some teams depth.

Maybe not enough, although one would think he would be getting more chances in a 4 man front.

Texas had too many DTs so this was basically thinning the herd. Even if you have a 4 man front we had too many. Besides the two freshmen who will arrive in the fall. You still have Coburn, Graham, Ojomo, Sweat, and Carson. That is 7 DTs which is actually perfect depth. This frees up two scholarships for more needed positions.

Still he's trading an almost guarantee of playing time for who the hell knows. I watch the portal and most times it at best gets you where you already were unless you are a special talent to begin with.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

    You make a good point.

However, in the past we've had times where the Horns have gotten real thin at DT and had limited experienced backups. I just hate to see experienced depth leave.... but it's their decision.

I am much more concerned about Offensive line than the DTs. I'm even much more concerned about DEs than DTs. Going into next year I think DT might be our deepest position. If we move Ossai to DE that will leave a big whole at Linebacker.

To maintain proper depth on the offensive line you need about 18 scholarship players. I'm pretty sure we don't have them. Losing Shepherd was a big loss, he potentially could have started next year. We should have the starters on the oline, but we need some guys to step up as backups.

If the upper classmen don't step up and lead mine of the above is going to matter.

We needed attrition in order to make room for a larger 2020 class. The Portal is good for something after all.

We could fill holes with JUCO transfers and search the portal as well.

What irks me is hearing guys that want to transfer somewhere so they "have a chance to compete".
I'm pretty sure you had a chance to compete where you were.
It's one thing if you are stuck at a position behind a couple of world-beaters...but, if you're not.....
    C'mon man.

Most of the time its that they can't compete with who is ahead of them and they know they aren't good enough to move up the depth chart. There are occasions where politics...yes politics....plays a role. Mack had that loyalty to a fault with upperclassmen. Some coaches have their "pets" etc....then some players have trouble staying out of the doghouse with some coaches....so they leave. All good reasons to jump in the portal and find a better fit.

Some entering the portal do so after being encouraged to by the coaching staff. That is never revealed, and another reason inserted for public use.

And sometimes the encouragement is subtle in that new meat keeps getting moved in front of them. I can never blame a kid for not wanting to ride the pine.
His first move should be to “kill it” in practice, and after repeated attempts to move up over a season, a move out is a valid option. Sometimes you are not going to win over some coaches.

And sometimes it is best to contribute and be on a winning team even if game time is unavailable. Now, everyone wants to be in the spotlight no matter how insignificant the stage is.

Guys who grew up getting participation trophies may be happy with merely being on the team, but guys who have been the star or a big contributor growing up don't care to just be on the team. There is great value in knowing your role and doing that well, to help the team. Some want to do more than just being a tackling dummy, etc in practice. The portal is for them especially when underclassmen are passing you by on the depth chart.
My solution to curb portal jumpers make sure you play your 2/3 deep guys as much as you can so the moral of the team stays really really high. ( only if they are busting their butt in practice and there isn't a huge talent gap that would cost you games )

Kind of a personal problem, is it not? I mean if one is as good as one thinks, one will be starting. If not, then ........

Exactly why all the seldom played and the roster guys are responsible for making the top level guys as good as they are. They earn my respect for sure. There is no team practice without them.

No athlete with a heart for the game will want to ride the pine. Good coaches develope to the point of making the guys at the bottom of the depth chart better so that they can play if needed, and give them playing time when they can. I have seen coaches over the years who will not give any playing time to kids who work hard. And there were many opportunities to give them just a little time, but they were preoccupied with a margin of win.

Having said that, if the kid does not have the heart, or skills to compete, he might be better elsewhere. The scout team needs potential starters with a heart for playing time. How else can you make the first teams better prepared for the competition?

I agree, but...hey...seems like with the mentality these days all you have to do if you are a starter is put it on cruise because the guy behind you is going to give up soon and quit anyway.
I say this partially in jest to make a point...

Considering our lack of depth at that position if he has not gotten any playing time I can understand his motivation. I haven’t noticed him on the field but that does not mean he hasn’t been out there. I miss a lot.
