And speaking of Central European Rhapsodies, Hungary is just one country removed from Bohemia. Just saying...

    Sure.

My reference was to the Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody. But, yeah, Bohemia makes the best Mexican beer.

What I liked about the old aTm Vs. Texas Thanksgiving day games were the band performances at halftime. UT always great and aTm at times also.

Here is Big Bertha back before we got her and she was still the big drum for the U. of Chicago. I think some of the U. of Chicago's football mojo came along with Big Bertha to the 40 acres--they used to be a great powerhouse in college football.

That picture from 1955 is amazing to be in color.

And by god that is the best Bevo I have ever seen.

Yeah, and it looks like the lanes on the track weren't striped back then.

It's hard to tell, but I think the opposing team's band on the track near the photo/East side is in green. Could be the Baylor game?

Green they are so if not Baylor, maybe NTSU or Tulane? Where's that 1955 schedule?

You must be young not to remember the cinder track.

We did play Tulane in 1955 at Memorial Stadium and beat them 35-21. We also played Baylor at home in 1955 and beat them 21-20, so it could be that game as well (2 green opponents in 1955). We were coached by the embattled Ed Price who had only 1 more year left on the 40 after 1955.

TCU won the conference that year while UT went 5-5. Then-mighty TCU (coached by Abe Martin) faced then-mighty Ole Miss (coached by Johnny Vaught) in the Cotton Bowl. Ole Miss had won the SEC, but opted for the more prestigious Cotton Bowl. Georgia Tech--then in the SEC and finishing behind Ole Miss in SEC conference standings--represented the SEC in the Sugar Bowl. Ole Miss won the Cotton Bowl 14-13.

Johnny Vaught - Ole Miss: (Vaught was originally from Olney, Texas and played football at TCU)

The cinder tracks were not permanently mark, but lanes were done before meets, much like the baseball lines prior to the invention of crumb-rubber surfaces.

    You are young. Enjoy it.

Cinder track and all the wooden buildings and the Quonset hut were gone by then. Hell, there was even a deck on the West Side of Memorial Stadium by then.

Who was that young whippersnapper who replaced Price? Some kid who only was a HC at Mississippi State for two years and one at Washington?

Did not care for it in the pre-game...they did some up-beat version of it and it only made the song worse....which takes some doing....

I remember thinking it was a lame tune back when we sang it in elementary school....we have too many cool things to play about TEXAS to drag dog into it....imo

We learned it in elementary school music/choir class (5th grade? ~50 years ago) and then never sang it again or even heard it performed the rest of the time I was in school. We never said the pledge to the Texas flag back then either.

    Seattle,

The band director blames the speeded up version on the lack of time given them for pregame.

My response, there is always time for Texas Our Texas, anybody that speeds it up or says not enough time is expendable.

We played Tech in 1955, but as a non-conference game. Tech joined the SWC a year or two later.

The story I’ve heard about Tech joining is that SMU had their panties in a twist over adding Tech to the conference. Tech boosters got a bunch of well-healed Lubbock and Midland ladies to cut up their Neiman Marcus cards and mail them to Neiman Marcus in Dallas. Stanley Marcus (or whoever was running the store at the time) then pressured SMU to allow Tech in.

Wait, there is a pledge to the Texas flag? Where have I been that I missed that for 6 years?

    Oh it gets worse:

"In 1933 the legislature passed a law establishing rules for the proper display of the flag and providing for a pledge to the flag: "Honor the Texas Flag of 1836; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible." The pledge erroneously referred to the 1836 national flag, known as David G. Burnet's flag, instead of the Lone Star Flag. Senator Searcy Bracewell introduced a bill to correct this error in 1951, but the legislature did not delete the words "of 1836" until 1965."

The pledge was again amended by House Bill 1034 during the 80th Legislature with the addition of "one state under God." The revised wording became effective on June 15, 2007."

First, by the articles of admission to the union, Texas may divide into no more than 5 states.

Secondly, just like the US pledge of allegiance, the words "under God" were not part of the original pledge. Which is the way it should be for a secular state. The state is only "under" the constitution on which it was founded.

Yes, and we "have to" recite it every day in public schools. That started in 2003, state law. The more you think about the tradition, the weirder it gets.
If you "have to" make a pledge (or say anything at all, like an apology), is there any evidence you meant it?
Do children under the age of 10 understand what they're saying? Do they even know the meaning of words like pledge, allegiance, or indivisible?
If a pledge means anything, shouldn't you only need to make it once? Imagine your husband/wife/fiancee told you, every single day, "I promise I'm not cheating on you."

Agreed. All good people are welcome to be a part of Texas. And that includes people that pray to many gods, or none.

That and "You'll pray to my god and like it!!!"
i.e. the American pledge, the Texas pledge, "In God we trust", and so on.

Very good points. A pledge of loyalty made under duress is meaningless. And wouldn't once a semester be sufficient?
(I'd like to know what the Founding Fathers would have thought about mandatory daily loyalty oaths. They never recited the Pledge of Allegiance, lol.)
