The cult is not getting an offer now and or ever, so can we please eliminate them from all discussions.

If true, (again,I’ve never heard that) I wouldn’t boast about it.

    Academic excellence - I get

All the rest of the baggage that comes with it, hell no.

Go back to the rating system for women. Hot vs Crazy. The hotter the woman the more crazy. Well in California they have really hot academics and bat **** crazy everything else. At some point, the crazy out weighs the hot. Berkley is Charles Manson crazy. USC is superhot moderate crazy. I'm pretty sure Stanford is no so hot but still bat **** crazy.

The fact that Texas would model themselves after Cal system makes a lot of sense on many levels. The big difference is Texas has balance with the conservatives of this state. We balance the dildo carrying progressives with gun toting rednecks.

I don't get all the BYU hate? I lived in Utah for several years. I went to several BYU games while I was there. Good people, no they won't get drunk with you, but they will give you the shirt off their backs if you need it. I highly doubt many here have met any Mormons.

Study the history. Frank Erwin and others in the administration sought to emulate what California had done. Remember Texas Western? What is it now? Pan American University? The history is very transparent.

I am not sure where this is going. Texas Western became UT-El Paso and Pan An became UT-Brownsville. All that proves is a money grab. UTA was aggy until Texas out bid aggy for the school. Arkansas did the same thing with UALR and UA Pine Bluff. Frank Erwin had nothing to do with that.

They are all copying the California University System structure at the administrative level. Texas was the most faithful as they were the largest outside of CA.

New York, another large and wealthy state, pales in comparison to what California did. No one copied them.

We will have to disagree. There are as many loons in New York education circles as in California. Again it is all about money and how to keep gathering more since the one with the most money is usually crowned the best - based solely on funding and not results.

What many here love about UT is the Texas aspect to the culture and how unique Austin is. The education is a great aspect and maybe that is what closely resembles the California schools. What we don’t want are socialism and laws or regulations resembling it. There are many forms of socialism, it can sneak up on us over many decades. California is the epicenter of that thought process. USC being part of a new conference is a good idea. The Arizona Schools as well for recruiting. And Arizona is most like Texas IMHO. Bring back Nebraska, Colorado and add the B12 minus WVU, KU, KSU. Add Rice, UH.

It is beyond ignorant to think that California universities have not made valid contributions to scienceand and academic progress with their world-class research capabilities. Texas is coming along very nicely thank you. But we're not quite at that level of impact, yet. Rice is the only other premiere academic institution in Texas.

A little paranoid, are we not? It is best not to confuse third-rate politics with intellectual progress. Some people are just afraid of free thought which is what universities are really about.

It's good to remember what happened in Germany in the 30s when Hitler persecuted the Jews as being the problem for German Society. After the Nazis had successfully purged the Jews from most academic positions in German universities, they sent I found themselves on the short end of the stick and Mathematics and Science. When the Nazi controllers asked why they were not making more progress solving problems in mathematics related to obtaining nuclear weapons, an academic scoffed that since the purge of the Jewish Scholars there was no mathematics or science left in German universities..

Pedantic political jingoism provides no insight whatsoever. Socialism is a dead economic principle in the USA. But intrusion by the government into private lives is supported by career politicians of all stripes when it advances their agenda. When individual freedons are diminished in favor of central control by an oppressive government of any political bias, then intellectual and societal progress is diminished.

There is a very intresting account of a 30 year old anonymous Chinese citizen in Wuhan about how government control of information and denial ofthe reality of early warning signs led to the spread of the Corona virus. It is an damning indictment of the Communist Chinese Party system to control all information that the citizenry can access. That resulted in the Coronavirus getting about a 60-day head start before measures were taken to counter it because the government was in denial. Funny thing is, we're seeing pretty much the same thing here. The US does not have enough testing kits and passed on employing the WHO testing kits that were available to them. Doctors in Washington state were prohibited to test patients by the CDC because they did not meet the correct profile as established by the CDC for candidates to have the Corona virus. Things are going to get very much worse before they get better because the pandemic is being addressed as a political problem rather than a medical one in both countries.

    Any = 0
    some = 1 to 10
    few = 11 to 50
    a lot 50 to 100
    Hell of a lot - over 100

I'm not just talking about a hand shake, I'm talking about having them as your neighbors, your kids playing with their kids. I would have no problem living in Utah again when it comes to the people I met there.

Perhaps it is you that is running in circles? Jingoism is not critical thinking nor awareness of facts. Just look at our Twitter in Chief.

There is no discussion possible when brains are not engaged.

This article is exactly why Texas and Oklahoma along with USC need to start their own conference. Any other school that wants to join has to bring something to the table. Sorry Baylor, Tech, KSU and ISU, none of you have anything of substance. Sorry WVU, you are not in the right geography. Okie lite brings football excellence, Kansas brings basketball excellence. Arizona schools bring Phoenix market and good recruiting. Utah Brings SLC market and good recruiting. Just need 5 more schools and you have a good conference. The other 5 I would chose are Nebraska TCU, Arkansas, UCLA if they can keep the California politics out and Oregon. No more little brothers if they can't stand on their own merits.

SLC has little more than 1 million people. It's the 47th largest metropolitan area in the country.
47 Salt Lake City, UT MSA 1,222,540 1,087,873 +12.38% Salt Lake City-Provo-Orem, UT CSA

It's closer to McAllen than Texas' 4th largest market Austin (over 2 million)
    65 McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, TX MSA 865,939 774,769 +11.77% McAllen-Edinburg, TX CSA

    Utah is a small market.
    ____________________________

Seattle and Portland are bigger than San Antonio and Austin, so I see their markets being wanted. I'd include the PNW-4, but I don't like the geography of a conference that big.

Arizona school have Phoenix and Las Vegas (very close).

You could do away with the mid-section (utah, idaho, colorado, new mexico) altogether on a conference and add teams that capture these markets...
    LA 2nd
    DFW 4th
    Hou 5th
    Pho 11th
    SFO/NoCal 12th
    Sea 15th
    Port 25th
    SAS 24th
    Aus 30th
    Vegas 28th
    KC 31st
(okc and tulsa are 41st and 50 whatever too)
If I were a network, I'd want those markets. 3 of the top 5 and 5 of the top 12 markets?

    UT
    Tech
    bu
    tcu
    ouSUX
    osu
    ku
    ksu

    ucla
    usc
    stan
    cal
    uo
    osu
    uw
    wsu

7 divisional games and 4 non-divisional games every year
Texas alternates UCLA and USC, Stan and Cal, uo and osu, uw and wsu every year. So we travel "away" in LA, SFO-NoCal, Oregon, and Washington every other year.

Pretty good basketball conference too. I'm more open to that. Let's just keep Utah and Colorado out of this whole thing.

Agree with the following exceptions. Cut Baylor (Waco smaller than SLC) and Cal and UCLA (California state schools bring California government issues into the mix-not good). Add Utah to take UCLA's place.

Actually SLC is much more than just the metro area, you have everyone from Ogden Utah all the way down to Provo Utah. That is much more than the 1.2 million it's closer to about 2.5 million. You don't just get the Salt Lake market, just like Nebraska dominates the Kansas City market, Utah dominates not only the state of Utah but also southeast Idaho.

Now if you are talking about media market, SLC is the #30 media market in the US ahead of San Antonio (31) and Austin (40).

Basically if Utah was in the Big 12 they would bring the #3 largest TV market to our foot print.

i didn't use Waco at all. Just the many, many green/gold baptists in the 4 big texas markets. But I agree that baylor isn't a huge money maker. good athletic department, other than football though.

just asking...where did you get your numbers that Ogden more than doubles slc/provo/orem? EDIT::because dfw, houston, la, sfo, portland, and seattle are all bigger tv markets than utah.

I'm playing politics on here a little. i'd try to steal a&m back, because it seems like a logically good move.
