No CWS this Year

NCAA has cancelled all winter and spring events to include the College World Series. For now UT has cancelled sporting events consistent with the Big XII's decision to pause a couple of weeks so who knows if there will be more regular season college baseball but no post season. Frankly its hard to see that happening which means this years college baseball season has almost certainly come to a close.

I totally get why these actions are being taken now but you have to feel for all these athletes who work so hard and now have this taken away by events beyond everyone's control. There will be some interesting questions about eligibility and whether this year counts for that, is one giant redshirt year, is just ignored and doesnt count at all. For those sports near the end of their season versus those just beginning there may be different calculations.

Meanwhile, to everyone here on baseball board, be safe be smart about what you do and where you do it and we can talk MLB on the back end of all of this as there will almost certainly be a truncated professional season starting in May or June. God Bless!

EDIT: They did it see Racer's post under Softball.
Especially tough on everyone whose 4 years are up this year. The NCAA should just throw out 2020 as a countable year for the spring sports. Basketball also has an argument, but their season was all but over.

I saw a coach, think Geno Auriemma, speaking to that point VH--He said that all seniors in any sport affected should have the option of returning next year WITH their scholarship (if they choose to) and not count towards the scholly limit in their sport---very interesting conundrum...

Yeah, the athletes. What about the people who rely on income from working these events? Food vendors, merchandising, etc.?

What a monumental cluster and dumb *** move all this has become. Morons.

It seems very premature to cancel the CWS already.

What does it hurt to wait 2 or even 4 weeks?

May give the suddenly unemployed workers time to find something else.

I suppose there is an unlikely chance to 'uncancel' the CWS.

I hope the conferences can play by mid-April, travel by bus, etc. and until the peak passes

I was eager to see how we would do in conference play with Hansen as the Sunday starter. My first spring since 1981 with no UT baseball in it.

Conference play now cancelled as well. Eligibility for all spring sports likely to be given another year at least for seniors.

I feel like a lot of the recent cancellations are getting mixed up in virtue signaling, everyone trying to show they care as much as everyone else.

I talked to my sister today who works at a hospital (administrative/management). She said the issue is that no one knows how bad it is going to be and this is just the start of the virus in the US. She said China and Italy didn't use social distancing (like cancelling sports/concerts/etc) and the cases really spiked and they're suffering for it. The theory is that by doing all of these things early, the US is "flattening the bell curve" for the spread of the coronavirus. It does suck for the athletes (and, for instance, the kids who worked so hard for the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo), but, in the big picture of things, it's probably better to have been safe and later say "why did we overreact" vs being slow to act and everyone saying "why didn't we see what happened elsewhere and act sooner?"....

I saw someone with this quote on their twitter: "We will never know if we overreacted but we damn sure will know if we underreacted."

The way this thing runs, don't be surprised if the shutdown runs 30 to 60 days due to the 14 day exposure cycle. It will take a couple of cycles to flatten the curve.

So how long does this go on? As long as there is even one confirmed case we have to shut everything down?

I don't think that, it's just the idea of getting a hold of the situation early on, making it easier later to handle things. We let everyone run around all over the place, and this may break wide open.

This was a lost year. I think our baseball and softball teams had a good shot at t he NC. Same thing for Sinton this year in state championship.
