Full disclosure I loved Rick Barnes, but thought the time had come for a change.

I had a short list at the time and Shaka was very high on it, but it has been gutwrenching to watch.

With the BIg 12 Tournament around the corner curious to see where the HornFan Nation's head it at regarding Shaka.

It is beyond his control. Short of a miraculous run and making the Final Four (or two), his future is dependent on his fellow coaches. If there is a qualified "name coach" that will take the job, Smart is gone, and has likely been told that and who his replacement is. If CDC hasn't identified that guy and cut the deal, it is beyond "likely" that Smart will be back for one more year.

Many people lose sight of the fact that this program will gross about $4 million less than UNC, which is leading all programs. That $4 is less than 2% of the total budget.

O Shaka keeps his job, because coronavirus saved him from losing another game.

Agreed. With the new arena opening next year, seems like the time is now. The basketball program needs a shot in the arm to say the least, I mean the attendance is pathetic, and I strongly believe that the ceiling with Shaka coaching is winning two NCAA games. He’s just not the guy to win a championship.

A new coach, or better the right coach, could help offset the buyout losses with better ticket sales. Not completely offset of course.

Shaka didn't sign anyone in the early period and there appears to be no real buzz about anyone. Could it be that the decision to let him go was made awhile back and he just shut down public recruiting.

Yeah, it's odd. We only have I think 5 offers out and only to 5 star recruits where maybe we get one who lives in Austin.

Let's keep Shaka so he can break in the new home for Texas basketball, you know, house-sit for a couple seasons to get all the punch-list items ironed out....

Since I'm not one of the two people attending those games, I shall defer my vote to them.

I am correcting myself. According to 247 we have six offers with only Greg Brown & Donovan Williams showing interest. One 5*, one 4* and four 3* offers out. There are 13 of the top 27 recruits in Texas all are unsigned and 3* but only one with an offer from Shaka. He feels like he has to go to Nebraska, North Carolina and Canada to offer the same recruits to get virtually no interest. Maybe if he looked closer to home he might get more interest.

Coach speak - the 's can be "is" or "was" :beertoast:

Seriously, that gives Chris a full year to choose & negotiate the new head coach.

An article in the Dallas News this morning discussed the fine line financially that CdC is walking. For instance, the total cost of the SEZ Project has been pledged, but not much cash has changed hands. So CdC is in a cash hoarding mode, and Smart's buyout isn't in the script right now.

I agree with Sabre and would add that CdC probably has put Smart on notice of what is expected of him the next season there is basketball.

Buy-out way to much prior to last season. No one stepped up with enough cash to get rid of Smart and pay for a now guy that will come and be better than Smart so another season of nothingness.

There was no way between Covid and the buyout that Shaka wasnt coming back next year. There is going to be a huge money crunch for the next 12-18 months and frankly with oil now selling at the murphy's down the street for 1.37 a gallon Texas is in not in great financial shape and needs to make money based decisions and this one was an easy one.

Here's what's going to happen. Whomever will defeat Donald Trump in the election, and Shaka, no longer fearing for his and his players' lives will then coach said players up and look out Final Four!!!!!!!

Greg Brown is closer to "hot".
Says he only comes if Smart is coach.
He can pick and choose anywhere he wants to play.

my point was not re:buy out, but rather CdC should have put Shaka on notice after LAST year!!

The basketball program brought in $13+ million last year. Pay the coach $10 million to leave?

I'd be for it, BUT only if Chris can find a home run coach to take the job. There are only a couple of those out there and they ain't leaving a basketball school.

YOU DON'T FIRE A SITTING COACH UNLESS YOU ALREADY HAVE HIRED HIS REPLACEMENT!
    Ask Alabama bout that

Shaka has to just keep on keeping on. We would be nuts to dismiss Shaka. This year has been great. And don’t forget, we’re the defending tournament champions (NIT).

Remember when we were wondering if this team was one of the 5 best in the nation?

And now a month and a half later, we are wondering if this team is one of the 5 best in the conference.

Chris Beard at ttu would have taken this team to the elite eight. He's already taken ttu to the NCAA finals.

Is he elite? He is very successful and puts on a coaching clinic every time tech plays the Horns. He is a Texas graduate and would be a significant upgrade over SS.

Shaka just needs to get into the tournament and start peaking. He finally has the depth and talent and we know he can coach a blue collar veteran squad to a Final Four...

I think he’s going to keep his job if he gets into the tourney, which, barring a complete shitting of the bed down the final 3-6 game stretch, we should be a 7 seed or better.

For the record I never liked the hire. And still don’t like him as the coach of our program.
