Take it for what its worth, a friend who is an official for college football (Mountain West conference) said that he was told today that if players cannot access schools to workout by July 1 then the NCAA will cancel season as teams will not have enough time to prepare and train for season and don't want to risk injuries.

    Don't shoot the messenger...

I'm not emotionally equipped to handle a whole year without football.

Too early to speculate, especially with so many conflicting reports. But I highly, highly doubt the season will be canceled given recent reports on (political stuff—which is to be reserved for West Mall).

But for shites and giggles, what if universities in areas less impacted by the virus resume activities while those in hard-hit areas do not?

Let’s hope the summertime heat does in fact subdue the spread. People will be celebrating the 100+ degree days

He's from the MWC, that worthless group of ****** wannbes, stacked with the worst officials in the history of football, including Walleye Burks and all those dentists and dental financing and software turds that Walt Anderson crammed down our throats with the blessing of Bowelsby.

No offense, Handler, but I chalk that up to a rumor I started to get all those MWC/Big Sky officials to not be available for Big XII games.

HIC, I charge you with finding out from Handler who this guy is and keep him off any of your planes heading to Texas.

I think football needs to be deemed essential much like liquor stores.
As long as we can keep everyone safe.

I would suspect that 01 July is the final discussion/decision date; not a hard go/no go date since fall camps usually do not open until the last week in July/first week in August. While they will not admit it, MLB is probably shooting for a 04 July opening week (could be earlier for games with no attendance) so there could be some validity to that date. However, if football cannot go that means all of the other fall sports cannot go. (Of course, such a move would enable aggy to claim an undefeated season and another National Championship.)

While offering up no opinion on the OP, (and possible July 1st drop dead date), having amateurs playing and earning billions for their schools, while professional sports are cancelled, postponed, have abbreviated seasons, or are played in empty venues is really not an optic that the NCAA wants. I think they showed that when the cancelled the Basketball Tournament in literally a matter of hours after it became clear we had a tsunami headed our way. The loss of the 2020 season is really not that far from the realm of possibility.

    4th_floor Dude, where's my laptop?

If football is cancelled, that means we are still in lockdown mode. Because of the resulting worldwide depression, football really won't matter much.

No March Madness, Olympics will likely be delayed (if not called off), probably no Tour De France either, and now this? This could be a real downer of a year.

As long as players can report by around Aug 1 or so, the season could go on as normal. The players are big boys and can, and will, do workouts on their own, and show up in shape and prepared.

If it's later in August, then cancel all pre-conference games (if necessary) and only do the conference slate of games. Re-arrange the schedule as necessary. If it's after September 1, we're in trouble.

I think back to two-a-days in high school--which started about 2 weeks before the first game. Yeah, college ball is a huge step up, but IMHO multiple months before the first game is not a necessity. Especially if the athletes keep in shape over the Summer. At this level, they typically do.

Worst case, take all September games and move them to December. then quality bowls in January

Kind of selfish of fans to bemoan their lack of entertainment in the not yet middle of a pandemic.

It should be obvious that if there is no Spring camp followed by no Fall camp, the season cannot start on time. At best, all the non-conference games will have to be dropped. At worst, the season is cancelled. There is no football practice with social distancing in effect.

The idea of some teams playing and some not is ludicrous, to be generous.

No classes - no fall sports so the important date is when the University is cleared to hold fall classes and resume athletics. If classes can begin as scheduled on 26 August, fall athletics probably would be cleared to start on 01 August. On the other hand, if the ok for athletics is the start of the fall semester, all pre-October games will be dropped. For Texas that would mean all 3 of the non-Conference games either postponed to December or (probably) eliminated. That would mean Texas opening up at Wheat aggy on 03 October followed by ou on the 10th (with or without the State Fair).

The important date to remember is August 31, 2020. That's not when football or classes will likely resume but rather the date Longhorn Foundation dues are required to be paid.

This isn't a UT decision, it's a NCAA decision. Classes were still going on when spring sports were cancelled. Still can't believe they cancelled Omaha so early.

No fall football. That's gonna be rough. The LHN might show reruns of old football games from years ago. But that's just not the same.

Brian Kelly just said July 1 is a drop dead date on ESPN. Again, he's not part of the NCAA but that seems to be the magic date.

What is magic about July 1, particularly for ESPN? What else are they going to televise? Maybe the daily parade from Disney World?

Sorry but bass fishing from Toledo Bend won’t draw nearly the ratings of Alabama/LSU or Iowa State/OU or any Mike Leach game.

What he needs two months to get ready to play Navy, Arkansas, Western Michigan, and Wake Forest before 01 October?

Despite what Handler thinks, athletics will not start until it is clear when the fall semester is going to start.

True that's the football season ticket deadline.

Not sure about ESPN, but July 1 is the start of a new athletic year. That means schools start membership in a new conference and fall sports are on the clock that date.

Making it hard to demand millions of dollars in donations for tickets to games that might not be played\could be tricky, especially for those tee shirt fans that jumped on board in the 2000's. If however that donation is allowed to cover the 2022 season, then the LHF member has made out like a thief in the night with the much more attractive home schedule.

Far too may what if's at this points. Go water your yard. Call a friend. Make an amends (even if you aren't in the wrong), check on an elderly neighbor and then mow their lawns. You get the point.

When in Fayetteville for the 1969 UafA game, we passed the First Baptist Church whose monument sign had words "I've tried never to, forget ''FOOTBALL IS ONLY A GAME; ONLY SPIRITUAL THINGS ARE TRULY ETERNAL; NEVERTHELESS.....BEAT TEXAS".

    Be safe.

We saw that also and decided to stop on the way out and take a picture with some hand gestures. Our plans were to hang around to say hi to Dicus and his girlfriend and then mosey out of town. However, after the game, a group of some of the less than outstanding citizens of Fayettenam started to hassle us and when the odds grew to about 5 to 1, we decided to head towards the Oklahoma border in a very smart fashion.

With New Orleans turning out to be the new center of infection, a trip to Red Stick in September is looking less positive. A full summer without baseball is looking more likely, but if this thing hasn't passed by July we will have bigger issues than no football.

Of course if the political conventions go off more or less on schedule, cancelling football in the fall will not go over very well.

I don’t believe it. There could be options. For example, they could move the start to September 15th or October 1st, and just shorten the season. Or, they could start later and extend the season.

The amount testing capability will be enormous by Aug 1. Each team could have its own testing apparatus if needed.
