I really hope these seniors get another year of eligibility back since the season has basically been cancelled. This team was a very special team and I hate to see it end like this. Hopefully the NCAA does right by them and gives them an opportunity to play for what they have been working hard for

I'm hoping for a pushback to May/June when it's HOT.

If all these spring athletes don't get another year it would be criminal, especially the softball and baseball. How to balance it with incoming freshman though, I have no clue. It's gonna be a nightmare.

Now that they have been given another year let's all hope these seniors decide they want to stay another year. I really hope they do but Elish I really hope stays. Next year Ucla will be getting back Garcia and bubba so we are going to need her next season. This team will be even better next year once these freshman come in. Elish, o'Leary, day and ryleigh white is a dominant staff and the bats will be even better than they were this season.

Well, now that more time has passed, I have to think about what is realistic for the softball team and it's seniors. I had hoped for a June or July WCWS. But first, you have to get the Big 12 to allow competition to resume, doubtful. Then, you have to get all the conferences to agree to participate in a potential WCWS, very doubtful. So, you have to write off this incredible year (we beat #1 AND #2 - Argh!!)

The one positive thing I can think for our seniors, if they take advantage of a 5th or 6th year, is that they get to enjoy their new facilities when Fall softball starts up.

Some articles talk about the ripple effect financially for allowing another year. Some schools don't have a cash generating football program like Texas and will have to figure out how to finance an extra year of 1-5 scholarships. Others have pointed out that some scholarships are shared/split among players and that will be tricky to figure out.

What I've wondered is how this creates a logjam of some types of players, i.e. pitchers. Not only would Texas have a DEEP pitching staff, the teams Texas plays will also have a DEEP pitching staff. This year stars like G. Juarez and Montana Fouts were having an off year. We caught them at the right time! Except we didn't get to play them! Argh.

And to be frank, maybe some seniors would be encouraged to not to come back. Players who tended to have lots of errors at their spot or were put in only for pinch running or who have better players at their spot who were waiting right behind them for their chance. Or as someone pointed out, some seniors have jobs waiting for them for when they graduate. Do you tell Wall Street that you'd like to hold off on that start date for 1 year?

I really hope Elish returns, I remember in an interview with LHN hearing her say she could see herself staying in Austin after college so I’m sure she will return; the other seniors are all replaceable. What sucks is this really was going to be our year, you could just feel it. If we didn’t win it all, we were going to advance deep. We may be better next year, but so will other teams. Having Garcia and Juarez out this year was a huge benefit for us.

At a large school, one or two additional scholarship in any given class is at negligible cost to the education side of the scholarship. During their season the only measurable is transportation and housing which should be manageable.

The only sport where financial issues could arise is football because of the sheer number and the fact football usually doesn't do the partial scholarship thing.

Yeah I would take miranda elish, Kaitlyn Washington and shannon rhodes. Elish because she is MIRANDA ELISH! Washington and Rhodes because there bats are working well this season but if it had to be one it would be elish. I really am just stalking her Twitter waiting for her to say she will be back or give a hint that she is coming back

This is an interesting question. How does this work with the scholarship limits in place? Do seniors who decide to return not count against the limit? The incoming freshman class has already been signed so if all the seniors come back and count against the limit what happens to all those incoming freshmen?

My daughter will be a freshman next year and that was the first question she asked me. Her high school season is on hold so now she's worried about what if there's no room for her next year.

It's a given that there has to be a temporary, one-year exemption to the scholarship limit. Now, if 3 out of our 6 seniors decide not to come back, does Texas get the limit+6 or limit+3 exemption? Probably limit+3.

I agree that seems like common sense, but the NCAA is notorious for not fully thinking through their decisions.

Strong possibility of return as far as slack goes. As far as reagan it seems like she will not be returning but it's like 60/40 with her and still waiting to hear back on Washington. Once I hear anything I will post it here.

I was listening to the 7th Inning podcast, and they covered many of the issues I've thought about concerning a redo for all the seniors:
    Outside the White Lines
(skip ahead to the 23:00 mark)
    1) who are the big names coming back (Elish mentioned)
    2) what are the implications of having teams that could be 30-35 big
    3) transfer portal for those players who waited their turn and now someone they thought would be departing is coming back
    4) do some players who suffered through injuries want to put themselves back through pain just to play for the chance of a WCWS berth

Hathaway is a good example. She's a 5th year senior and has a hard major, Biology. What if she's already had job interviews for post-graduation lined up. With 5 years at UT, she's done or very close to done getting her bachelors. Does she want to go through the trouble of take the GRE and applying to grad school to play just one year before dropping school? Does she have to pay for grad school or part of it?

I don't know here from Adam. I know from IG that's she's really, really tight with Burke, Elish, and Tedder. Will that play a role in it? And to be frank, there's not much of a post-graduation career in softball like there is in WBB or Volleyball.

I don't see the NCAA going through with this re-do....Plus who is going to put their life on hold just to play one season of softball, etc ? Who is to say Corona or something else doesn't rear its ugly head next season ?

I think they will. Many of these athletes not just for softball but many other spring sports needed this season to prove they are capable at playing at the next level. For example baseball. Many players not only needed this season but they all wanted the chance to play in the college world series. So when you think about it you can't think only from the softball perspective but all the other spring sports as well.

Today is the day the NCAA decides whether or not to give athletes another year of eligibility. I really hope they do what's best for these athletes because I won't be able to come to terms that Miranda Elish is done as a longhorn :(

From twitter and other sources, I'm seeing two requests or hopes:
    1) giving seniors an extra year
    2) giving ALL players an extra year
We've been talking about seniors...but can you imagine the repercussions of having all players +1 on eligibility? Massive rosters for 3 years!

Added: Of course, it's the NCAA....so they may just kick the can down the street

So it's official! We will be seeing Miranda Elish again in 2021... I am very happy the ncaa granted another year but I am shocked that it was for every athlete instead of just seniors but I am not complaining. With some seniors coming back and this incoming class, Texas lacks in no position whatsoever and these bats are really about to be amazing to watch:hookem::hookem:

While I applaud giving seniors an extra year, I wonder how this will affect teams for the next few years.

2020 - 20 players (Slack, DerMargosian not coming back - so far as we know)
    2021 - 18 players from 2020 + 6 recruits = 24 players
    2022 - 20 players from 2021 + 8 recruits = 28 players

Obviously, this will result in transfers or some players opting to give up school and continue at UT.

    And from the financial perspective:

Members also adjusted financial aid rules to allow teams to carry more members on scholarship to account for incoming recruits and student-athletes who had been in their last year of eligibility who decide to stay. In a nod to the financial uncertainty faced by higher education, the Council vote also provided schools with the flexibility to give students the opportunity to return for 2020-21 without requiring that athletics aid be provided at the same level awarded for 2019-20. This flexibility applies only to student-athletes who would have exhausted eligibility in 2019-20.

Assuming that wasn't said in sarcasm.....
Here is what it would have looked like if only senior pitchers had been given the extra year (in other words, Elish-only)
And this is what it will look like now that NCAA has granted everyone on the team, from Freshman to Seniors an extra year:

In 2022, there will be 8 pitchers on the roster for the Longhorns. Will pitchers like Simpson and Quiroga look at that and say, "Uhhhh, maybe I should look at another school where I might get a chance to play sooner"

Of course, I do have to point out that the first picture has 7 pitchers for 2021 as well as 7 pitchers for 2022.

I assume that there will be some "roster management", where players announce they will be giving up softball and just concentrate on school.

Yellow = those given bonus year
Green = signed class of 2020
Blue = verbal commitments for class of 2021

And that's just pitchers. Imagine if you were a catcher or a natural SS looking at the roster wondering if you can wait 3 years to get a shot.

It was not sarcasm I was being serious. If it were I would have told you that it was. At the shortstop position, it's really open to anyone. Slack has already announced she won't be returning and the only other ss we had was parker and she has a lot of errors so next season it's in the air on who will be starting SS

Explaining this to my spouse, she said, "Uhhh, but if they were seniors don't they have to graduate? They have no more classes to take"

I did the finger air quotes and said, "Grad School"
