Longest Horn was bringing in factual data and linking it. It matches anecdotally, Everybody in my facebook feed who contends this is a hoax (still a couple of them) ,less consequential than the media makes it out to be, pissed because church services are cancelled, are conservative Republicans. Of couse a lot of people who put no stock in the danger are young, unaware politically and not particularly aligned with anyone. ... and go on Facebook only to see what their grandmother is up to.

I think it is more nuanced when you consider the following:
    1) 80% will get it before a vaccine will be available. The question is the height of the peak, not the area under the curve
    2) 50% of deaths were going to occur anyway in the next 6 months

If you understand the above, once the peak is past you go back to normalizing society.

I think there will be incremental improvements to treatment, even before we get the vaccine and it will be great when we get past the peak and can gradually normalize contact. One thing that is a little worrisome is that I've read there are at least two strains of COVID-19 and recovering from one won't necessarily prevent you from getting the alternate strain. Not pretending to be an expert.
Mchammer: do you think it plausible that while the area of infections is set, the steps to slow its spread will reduce the number of deaths?

You are actually saying something differently than what LongestHorn said.

Republicans aren't saying that the corona virus is not a problem or people shouldn't protect themselves. They are simply bringing up the other part of the equation. What you are seeing is Democrats who pay NO attention to the problems the government's response creates for our freedom and economy.

Then when anyone brings up that freedom and the economy are very important factors to consider, smug ******** like LongestHorn, say look Republicans think the virus is a hoax, QAnon, Steve Bannon, crazy hicks, blah blah blah!

He is either very dishonest or very unintelligent.

Depends on the Republican. Some avidly say we should get on doing what we were doing, go to church, shake hands and speed the day when this thing will have run its course

Much has been made of Dr. Fauci's reluctance to support Trump's recommendation of making alternative treatments such as hyrdroxychloroquine available. It turns out, Dr. Fauci may have a financial interest in pushing something he is connected to.

    And see

Or maybe not. But it would seem to fit a pattern of other connected individuals that profited in similar circumstances.

I live in Nashville proper - which is actually a liberal city compared to the rest of the state. The theories, beliefs and hysteria know no political party. People that are walking outside are complaining about runners passing them more than 6 feet away because they are running too fast and spreading it 10 times more.

Lobo’s post said nothing about Republicans versus Dems. He turned it into fake media for his political benefit.

Our facilities are seeing fewer cases and many people going home. Not a big enough sample size, but I think the combination of actions and environmental factors are working. There needs to be some opening of the economy in smart ways soon before a total collapse.

No, I do not. Only thing that can help you is that better treatments in the future will reduce death, so if you are vulnerable you need to hide at home for 6 months. Age, genetics and underlying conditions appear to be big 3. How does that change with slowing down the virus? I hate to be fatalistic, but frankly some people’s number will be up. Now that was true every day pre-virus (think heart attacks, cancer, etc). But the virus does offer a chance to skirt death if you avoid it completely. Also, waiting will give time for people to develop genetic tests to determine who is more susceptible. If known, these people should be given experimental vaccines. Like I said, nuanced.

Are you suggesting that a statistically significant number of Republicans are making this suggestion? If you are, that’s absurd. Please provide proof, not an example of say two per million people.

But sure, there are probably a few, and those few are narcissistic fools.

I had a somewhat renown endocrinologist tell me weeks ago that during the HIV epidemic or just after, Fauci unethically attempted to benefit financially. While I am not privy to the details, apparently in a court of law, he lost the case.

I do think that he is a smart guy and I also understand his reluctance to endorse the HCQ + Z-pack regimen because by doing so he would be undermining the belief by many scientists that a protocol must be followed (studied) to verify the efficacy of any treatment. So again, I understand. But, I do not agree!

At some point anecdotal evidence is no longer anecdotal. There have been way to many reports of success with the regimen plus various studies pointing to success to continue to argue that the treatment does not have some degree of efficacy. Additionally, the lame and politically motivated manner in which many in the media — like Sanjay Gupta — have suggested that there is a safety issue with HCQ was basically debunked this week by Daniel J. Wallace, MD - Cedars-Sinai, when he shared his 42 year experience of success with virtually no side effects.

Indeed, a number of recent polls by Axios, Civiqs, NBC News/Wall Street Journal,Pew, Reuters, and Quinnipiac University have all confirmed that concern about COVID-19 is greater among self-identified Democrats than Republicans (this summary suggests that, on average, 65 percent of Democrats are either somewhat or very concerned about catching the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus compared to only 38 percent of Republicans), while Republicans are much more likely to believe that social distancing is an unnecessary overreaction.

Longest is the one linking statistical studies. I spend time on Facebook every day and see a handful of posters excoriating our Denton County judge for shutting down businesses and golf courses and a couple of conservative pastors railing against the restrictions. I'm just saying what I read makes the stats seem plausible?

Republicans tend to be older and male and married. Likely these are more important factors than party ID.

Can Americans Spot Fake Coronavirus News?

This seems to be the most recent one I can find. Trying to pare it down to "a few" narcissistic fools seems to be taking the stats lightly, especially the subset of Fox News viewers that the polling consistently had as far outliers.

I still think region and urban/rural has a lot to do with this. Personally, I live in a pretty small village. I have neighbors, but I'm virtually never closer than about 30 feet away from them anyway. I drive almost everywhere. I still go for walks outside, because it's pretty easy to socially distance in a small village. In the grocery store, I'm careful. I don't stand close to people, and frankly, I generally keep my distance anyway. This isn't a huge disruption to me other than Deez, Jr. being out of school.

But what if I lived in a big city? I think I'd view this differently. Streets are usually very crowded. Public transportation is common and very crowded. I think I'd view this as a bigger danger and a much bigger disruption.

I'd like to see polling that looks at rural Democrats and urban Republicans. Do they tend to view this as their fellow partisans do or as those who live around them do?

Most folks can see that the Democratic party and the MSM have been hyping this pandemic as much as possible to ruin the economy in their shameless hopes of defeating Trump.

I agree that COVID19 is a serious threat - more than a cold or flu. But its also not the second coming of the black death. There were predictions that several millions of Americans would be killed now we are expecting less than 100k. Just shameful. As the Democratic patron saint of Shamelessness Rahm Emanuel once said, "Never let a crisis go to waste."

As of today, your chance of dying from CV in the US are a little less than .005%. In Texas, it's just a shade over .0006%. Hardly seems worth all this fuss.

It's easy to forget now that they're freaking out, but it wasn't that long ago that they were saying the opposite - that Trump was overreacting with a racist travel ban. That may as well have been in the 9th century, but it was only about a month ago.

The models a few weeks suggested that ban saved 2 million lives.

Another variable that people routinely overlook is that one's location is going to play a significant role in how one feels about the current nonsense...someone in New York is understandably more concerned than one living in a State where fully a third of the Counties have had ZERO cases. Not zero deaths...zero CASES!

The other element is that persons capable of rational thought recognize that the hype and fear-mongering does nobody one whit of good. The rational person recognizes that, yes, some people will die of this (just as they do annually with the flu), but for a substantial majority, coming down with COVID-19 is an inconvenience (just like with many other illnesses).
