Associate Head Coach Johnnie Harris - 2018 WBCA Assistant Coach of the Year. She was responsible for the post players and anyone who saw the improvement year over year in Teaira McCowan knows she can coach/develop bigs. I’d say she’s likely a candidate to take over at MSU but it’d be nice if she came to Austin. Associate Head Coach Dionnah Jackson-Durrett - 2 associate head coaches? The Sooner All-American tutored the point guards at MSU. Under Jackson-Durrett’s watch, the Bulldogs have ranked inside the top 25 nationally and led the SEC in assists (3x), assists per game (1x) and assist/turnover ratio (2x) a combined six times. Elena Lovato - returned to MSU in 2018-2019 for her second stint with the Bulldogs after 2 years as the HC Arkansas-Fort Smith. A remarkable recruiter and I assume works with the SG/SF (?)
I agree bring them all. We need him to bring Johnnie to develop Charli. Celeste will now become like a Victoria Vivian. OMG I'm so excited with this hire!
Twitter world says he's bring his entire staff. Elena Lovato was the head coach at JUCO powerhouse Trinity Valley CC. She has plenty of recruiting connections in Texas and with other JUCO coaches. Hope she comes.
If I am correct that could only be Muffet McGraw of ND, JPMC of Duke and Jeff Walz of Louisville. Hard to see Muffet or Walz leaving, so maybe JPMC?
My guess is JPC or Hillsman. Those are the only coaches that could legitimately find a better situation as MSU
And if you count assistant-coaching at a Final Four, Nell Fortner was an AC at La Tech back in the 90s during one of their FF runs.
The only coaches in the ACC who would be worthy of raise up to $2 million a year based on their current salaries would be Muffett and Walz as each makes at least $1.4 million, I believe. Hillsman makes like $900k and wouldn't have even made the NCAA tourney this year. Nell is not worth $2 million, and neither is JPM from Duke.
Interesting read on Vic and his assistant coaches from January... 'We can win wherever we go': An inside look at Mississippi State women's basketball's assistant coaching culture
Good insight. Bringing those ‘Key 3’ members of his ‘A Team’ could be huge—in addition to Blair, who seems to be a given. I’ve often wondered about our own assistants through the seasons. Much like our players, how might they have developed at other programs. Have no firsthand knowledge, only gut feelings, to base it on, but I’ve felt, at times, their hands were tied in many ways, within the system that was. I wouldn’t be totally surprised if either Jaime or Terry were retained. The unfolding is part of the excitement as we move forward. Still running on adrenaline over Texas’ good fortune to land a coach of Vic’s caliber.
I could not agree more that "their hands were tied".... I think both Jamie Carey and Terry Nooner are very smart and always felt Karen just would not listen to anybody. Will certainly be interesting to see if he retains either one of them....
Loved the article. Would love to see all the assistants come. It will be interesting to see what role he gives his daughter. He mentioned that she would be a great coach somewhere in an interview. Depending on whether Harris comes, daughter might be elevated to assistant coach. I don’t see any of the old assistants staying. Nooner has an outside chance if Harris gets the MState head job.
I am really curious to know who Mississippi state offered 2+ million to because Walz said he has not been offered the position so I really don't know who else is worth 2+ million besides Walz
No mention of the position she’s taking - glad to see her coming to Austin. Enjoyed watching her as a player and thought she was very good as an analyst in the tourney after she graduated.
BOZICH | Jeff Walz says he has not been offered Mississippi State job Those words came out of his mouth. He said it during a 20 minute teleconference.
Any updates on those 4 or 5 players you assured us we would lose??? Just wondering..... It's obviously not Charli or Celeste......
Really? I didn't know we had players in the portal or going to leave. Who are the 5 that plan on leaving?
I never said that.... It was BBV Horn who said we would absolutely lose 4 or 5 players. But based on other predictions by same, I wouldn't count on it. I doubt we lose anyone of significance.....
Walz is playing word games here. They've been in discussion going back and forth over numbers but technically none of that constitutes a formal job "offer".
