That could be said of people like Earl Warren, Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Rheinhardt, and lots of other really rotten judges. The problem isn't a lack of competence. It's a lack of character, discipline, and courage and a overwhelming presence of power-hunger.

What you think of Luther's case is fine. People can agree to disagree on that. But you shouldn't be deferential to the Texas Supreme Court just because of who they are. They're no different from any other group of political hacks, and they're more than willing to butcher the constitution and laws to force their preferred outcome in a given case.

With nine conservatives over nine democrats that's way less likely.

It's less likely to happen in situations that bug us and more likely to be done to force an outcome we may like, but it's not necessarily less likely.

And right there is the saddest part.

But it's a very difficult problem to solve. Texas elects its judges. That means the judges solicit for campaign contributions like hookers. However, instead of selling sex, they sell judicial rulings. When the insurance and homebuilding lobbies dump money into a guy like a Nathan Hecht, they know what they're getting. They're getting a guy who will construe the individual's right to a trial by jury like Sonia Sotomayor construes the right to bear arms and bail them out if they decide to gamble at the courthouse and lose badly. On the flip side, personal injury lawyers are willing to bankroll justices who will do the reverse. They'll force every potential dispute into the litigation system and bail out plaintiffs lawyers who screw up.

Of course, we can appoint judges like the federal system does and diminish this problem. However, that has its own set of problems. They get very drunk with power, because they're damn near impossible to get rid of, and they will use that power to dictatorially force their political and social agenda.

Greed, greed for $$ and power has corrupted a system that was beautifully conceived but now contaminated.

Hugh Hewitt said that Scott Pelley's piece on 60 Minutes last night about the Trump Administration and the Coronavirus contained 3 outright lies. Lies like Pence claimed the virus was manufactured in the Wuhan lab, etc. The MSM routinely backs the CCP rather than their own government. They'd sell their own country down the river to get Trump. That's how much they hate him.

Public schools provide other services besides education that a lot of people do not even think about. Meals is one, daycare so Mom and Dad can go to work is another.

I can see giving kids meals at school. No kid should go hungry in America.

What I want to know is what are the parents doing with the WIC and SNAP ( food stamp money ) they are getting. They apparently aren't using it to provide food for the kids

It's about time to pull a reverse Nixon and triangulate Russia against China. I carry no water for Russia. I fully understand Russia is not our friend and is not to be trusted. Yet Russia is much less a threat and enemy to us than China at this point. Our State Dept needs to pull its head out and do some real diplomacy to surround China (and China's insane stepson N. Korea) with adversaries. Vietnam, of all places, is now fairly well in our camp. India leans strongly our way now. The Phillipines remains in our camp. Japan is practically a U.S. outpost in the far East. S. Korea and Taiwan desperately need us. Thailand loves us. Indonesia tolerates us. Australia loves us. The Stan countries seem to loathe China at least as much as they loathe us. Russia to the North is the huge missing piece of the puzzle.

It may even be worth it to give Vlad some reasonable concessions in Europe and Syria in exchange for something akin to a loose partnership against China in the East. In any event, we need to keep the Russians and Chinese at each others' necks (and I'm not talking about making out). We don't want to deal with a Russia + China alliance.

Chop or you Mus? Just kidding.

I wouldn't do anything FOR Russia. But there are many things we could UNDO that are AGAINST them.

Well, our State GDP is probably greater than that of Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, and some of the other useful nations we need to surround China (obviously Texas’ GDP does not exceed the GDP of Japan and maybe not S Korea).

Russia would be useful if they can be steered strongly against China. It’s a tough and even dangerous play with Putin in charge. Brezhnev was a dope. Putin is a master strongman diplomat—sort of like Bismarck. If we try to play Putin, Putin might end up playing us. Yeah, I know, if you lie down with the bear you’ll get mauled. Still, with China as the biggest baddest bad guy, I say we take a page from Nixon and try to triangulate Russia against them.

In the Last Dance documentary about Michael Jordan, someone described David Stern as the king capitalist. What a huge shift with the new commisioner.

Back in the day, before sports salaries got completely out of hand, many and perhaps even most sports writers took the side of the fans in most labor issues. But now all that has changed. All of them are now pro player in any labor dispute. They all knee jerk that way no matter the issue. It's an automated, robotic response. No one is allowed to think critically anymore. Siding with labor is woke and you will get run out of the business pretty quick if you challenge woke orthodoxy. It makes me sad.
