This isn't about racism. It's about power, and Eagles is an unwitting pawn.

If we cave because of a nuance associated with a song from 100 years ago, there's no stopping. The line must be drawn, now.

For those of you who disagree, please pause, take a deep breath and think about this objectively, not emotionally. Please.

Our school color, burnt orange, is racist. Think not? What color do prison chain gangs wear? Blacks are disproportionately represented in chain gangs so we will need to change our colors.

Texas. The name "Texas" must have some associated connotation that can be construed as being racist. Think that's silly? Just wait.

For those of you that support what BLM -- through Eagles and others -- is demanding, explain to me where the line will be drawn. Please. I challenge you. Provide an example of a demand that you "will not" support. Let me repeat that:
PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIAL DEMAND THAT YOU WILL NOT SUPPORT.

Throughout history, the removal of everything associated with the past is a precursor to massive and violent change. And that change is almost always terrible. Those defending or associated with the past are eliminated. Think this is a fringe perspective? Take a look. The "history" books (as long as they still exist) are full of examples. You say I'm nuts? Are you not aware of the effort underway to change the books used to educate our children?

BLM, Al Sharpton and a few but growing number of others are leveraging our White Guilt to affect massive change, but NOT change for the better. The lemmings -- and the ignorant and willing accomplices in the MSM -- are going along because they know no better. And many have an agenda.

When REAL black leaders -- and there are plenty -- point out the hypocrisy and the primary reason that so many blacks in this country are stuck in the ghettos of our large cities and being decimated by black on black crime, they are attacked.

When the truth is attacked, you have a huge problem. When the media in a country distorts the truth to shape a narrative, you have a huge problem.

As I have said before, this is a time for leadership. If the University, if CDC, if Herman doesn't take a stand and draw a line, almost everything that is dear to us will ultimately vanish.

Think I am being an alarmist? Just watch. But frankly, those of you that are poo-pooing the obvious are the same people that, when we have nothing left, probably won't even notice.

My wife would agree with you since I don't watch the NFL anymore. If the Longhorn shoe was to drop then she would say Alright, alright, alright.

You're right, but I'm surprised you let him get away with that superficial bumper sticker, internet meme horse crap. Equality with respect to policy is objective. It doesn't matter what it feels like.

I seriously doubt that any BMD that disagrees with buckling to these extortion demands will make a dramatic political statement about it. I believe they'll quietly relay their displeasure to CDC and withhold further contributions and support. Before you know it, these dear "social justice warriors" will have the pleasure of enjoying run down, outdated facilities and playing in a half empty stadium.

I wish had some Asian privilege (since they have higher income than whites). I also wish I had some black privilege too (since they are better represented in athletics). Sounds racist, doesn’t it?

I’m waiting to see what Golden, Bohls, and (as mentioned earlier) Campbell, Young and Williams have to say.

“If” Golden & Bohls are, in unison, a dissenting voice, that will signal something. However, if all five support the demands, it’ll be game over for the argument, and then game over for the program.

It’s not only the BMDs that generate large amounts of money. It’s also the fans, like me, that will immediately stop purchasing licensed apparel. That’s big dollars as well.

In fact, if the University caves we should consider a demonstration, and a mass burning of our Longhorn gear. Can you see that? Mostly old white guys burning their burnt orange gear?

I wish I had some geography privilege because my daughter is only top 10% at her Woodlands HS and likely not be able to get into UT-Austin because she is not top 6% despite her 5.5 GPA.

I wish I had youth privilege because every few years we have a culling at work of older employees (60-65) who wish to work a few more years.

This is so cute! Do you write the Antifa and BLM greeting cards for Hallmark?
White privilege is an empty construct created by the race baiters to justify and perpetuate racial paranoia within the black community. Like most paranoia, it's extremely difficult to define or for others to understand and cannot be expunged, except internally. As such, it's a never ending source of influence and power for the race baiters, just as they intend it to be.

Brennan Eagles seems like a young man trying to make a difference. I don't know that I agree with everything. I sure don't LIKE everything he said.

But standing up for what you believe in, even if all y'all old white men ( lol ) disagree with him, doesn't make him whiny, entitled, or demanding.

You are obviously older, but if you were wiser, you'd be more understanding when a young man tries to make a way in the world for himself and to improve the lives of himself and his people, whomever they may be. EVEN IF YOU DISAGREE WITH HIM.

When white Americans are going to be a minority (mostly due to our large number of immigrants, legal or otherwise), who is going to be blamed? No one has ever answered that question.

I think most are upset with the extortion angle of the letter. It smacks of bad faith. Of course he is too young to know this and gives rise to suspicion that Eagles is not the one driving this.

I don't think many on this board have any issue with the players standing up for their beliefs, however, many on this board do have an issue with extortion. Do you see the conflict of ideals?

“Equality feels like oppression when you’re accustomed to privilege.“

hmmmm, some truth there, especially when the ‘accustomed to’ is because you’ve been a celebrated athlete all of your vast 20 years.

By the way, how can a state entity like the athletics department give money to a political group like BLM, particularly when BLM is giving unrestricted money to Act Blue, which then distributes money to the DNC and Democratic PACs?

Ha ha, I had the same thought re: demonstration and burning of Longhorn gear. Of course the PD would probably show up and beat a bunch of our old asses in the process. Maybe then we could start our own movement. Curmudgeon Lives Matter?

My daughter was in the top 10% at Cy Creek years ago and worked her *** off. She tried to get in at UT but NOPE! Went to UH, later got a Masters at Washington U in St Louis and has just been accepted at Tulane in their Doctorate program. Her white privilege will cost approx 250k for education. I like the fact that she did not ask dad to help out on the Tulane expenses.

Quite honestly, before the Eyes went, I would rather see us drop to a Division III or whatever that lowest level is that doesn't have scholarships and instead have kids on the team who WANT to be here and will play because they understand the privilege afforded them...

There is nothing IN the Eyes of Texas that has a racist bent. Where it may first have been sung does NOT make it racist.

For those who negotiate commercial and legal contracts, you’re opening offer is critical. You better think 2-3 steps ahead. Obviously this didn’t happen with the letter from Brennan. Also, you need to know at which point you accept victory and go home. Extremists can never accept victory, which means a deal never gets done. The letter reads to me as amateurish and extremist. The opening paragraphs were good framing, which leads me to believe a coach or staff member help them write that part. Would it have killed them to get outside input on the more inflammatory parts?

Man the fragility is high in the Texas fandom. To be fair, it’s high everywhere. We’re just unearthing it now. It’s time though so I’m okay with it.

Many on here are too young to remember “Minstrels”, which got disbanded in the late 60s. At the time, they were held under the north end of Memorial Stadium. I got to go one year while I was still in HS. The winner of the “Best in Shoe” won only because it was the only fraternity skit not shut down by the censors.

You had to get there early because most skits did not make it through the first performance.

I’m sure it was much tamer in the teens and 20s, but those were also the days when Al Jolsen’s black face was big time entertainment.

Like I once heard, Winston Churchill was racist, but in 1940 London there were just two teams - Team Churchill and Team Hitler. Those choosing the latter didn’t fare so well.

No, it’s a question of whether the parties are pursuing win-win or win-lose deals.

UTex, I respectfully challenge you to define, now, where you would draw the line relative to BLM/Eagles type demands. I really hope you have the courage...and please don’t be flippant. This is a legitimate question.

If “The Eyes of Texas” is not off limits, what is?

I’m dead serious. Take a stand. Define what demand it would take for you to say, “No Mas.”

FWIW, Jimmy Kimmel gave a brief primer in White Privilege back on June 2, concluding with:
"I read something last night that I think makes a lot of sense. It's this: ‘White privilege doesn’t mean your life hasn’t been hard. It just means the color of your skin isn’t one of the things that makes it harder.’ Wherever you stand, I don’t see how you can argue with that.”
