Well the tweet explains what has been happening behind the scenes with Anthony Cook, Eagles, etc. Possibly some coaches or admin tried to tone it down and they got mad. I am agnostic as to the proper response. Maybe run it through the student council?
I looked up the history of the "eyes of Texas" I became disgruntled. Ok if I was the university I would get rid of all connections with the Confederacy, the statues, building names and especially the song "eyes of Texas". If not, we will have an all white team. Start a new tradition with a new song and do it happily and apologetically. Tell all incoming freshman we certainly promote equality. But don't give money to BLM. That's going too far. Peace out.

Except some of the changes they want include some of the most important people in the formation history of this university. UT should give all money with interest and all donated land rights back to the families who donated everything if their history here is erased. There wouldn't be much of a university left though. Someone also needs to remind these fools the financial risks involved for them here. No play = no likeness revenue from the most visible program in the country. Best food, best tutors, best dorms, best of everything for free combined with likeness revenue coming. Just go away.
The song first came out during a minstrel show but the concept of the song was pride in university and that Texas is looking to you to do great things. It came from another university where the students were told “the eyes of the South are upon you”, implying the same thing (civic duty). No one that sings that song at a football game are thinking “oh yeah down with black people”. A good friend I still keep in touch with from my UT days after three decades (And is black) told me Amazing Grace was written by a slave ship captain and “churches aren’t going to stop singing that song” just because of the person who wrote it. I’m all about making sure there are better laws and rules for police that help keep these deaths from happening, but doing away with a 100+ year old beloved school song that has zero to do with keeping anyone down does nothing for anyone. Unless the goal is to simply jack with anything traditional that white people put in place.
Amazing Grace was written by an ex-slave trader. Just sayin. No way the players are going to play with the song still in place. The song is going to be replaced so people should get used to the idea.

You need to read Wescott Ebert's well researched piece on BoN about the etymology of the song. It opened my eyes as to why any black person may look at it it as oppressive. It is not a pretty picture. The case against singing "The Eyes of Texas"
John Newton found Christ, gave up the slave trade and became one of England's great preachers and a leading abolitionist. His personal story of Grace and redemption is one of history's best. It may be one reason I love that hymn so much. Grace, forgivess and redemption are so marvelous it amazes me you hardly see lip service for them except in church.
Sorry, but 20, 50, 85 young athletes don't over I'm puzzled how a 100+-year-old song has become more of an issue to these players than the hundreds of black Americans killed by other blacks in our major cities each year. Be outraged over something serious.
There are so many logical infallacies in that article it is hard to count. So, someone said the eyes of Lee are upon you in Virginia (not Texas) but someone changed it to eyes of Texas (also it was a common thing to say) and then there was minstrel music that had racist music which became working on the rail road and then and then and then? Sorry, this is paranoia.
A good comment on BON: He didn't even say it was racist- it was "racist adjacent." Lol. I will give liberals credit in that they’re really good at crafting and changing the meaning of words. So now, in order for something to be racist, it doesn’t have to be racist in and of itself. It just needs to be near or have some tenuous at best, relationship to something that was maybe, perhaps racist.
It was written to justify the players and others not to sing The Eyes by referencing past racism totally unrelated to the song and then on a rather random basis attempted to connect The Eyes to said past racism. Bizarre. Also, it reads unhinged to me.
I'm sure they are outraged by Black on Black violence; and many, I'm sure, have made a difference in their communities. Now, they are doing more by being an athlete at UT where they join with their White brethren to go to hospitals, schools, etc. They see another problem and they want to see it get fixed. I was totally ignorant of the song's origin. If I had known all along what I know now, I never would have stood for it, much less sang it.
You simply do not get it. Try again or move over because American society is changing. This is not a body count contest. This is about abolishing and eliminating institutional racism.
I did read it, and as I've previously stated, it read like a leftist BLM support op-ed one might find in the NY Times. Are you incapable of answering my question? Or perhaps doing so will clearly reveal the author's (and your) weak attempt to tie the song to overt racism. Now go back and reread the article, discount all instances of baseless emotional drivel, create a list of facts that demonstrates how The Eyes of Texas is overtly racist and return with your explanation.
It's the minstrel show in blackface that bothers me the most. I'm done on this topic. I've been a fan since 1962 and season ticket holder since 1977 and I can adjust to the necessary changes.

There are so many race-related (not racist) issues that could benefit from the passion and energy of these athletes. A 117-yearr-old song hardly seems like one of them. If the players don't want to sing the song, fine, don't sing. But they don't have the standing to demand eliminating "The Eyes," they simply don't.
But when the game is over and the athletes are walking back to the locker room they will feel the lack of unity and disconnect with the fans when they should be singing with them. This won't feel good. We are Texas and we are capable of change let's make a new tradition.
