Since she is transferring within the Big 12 conference, then she will probably have to sit out the upcoming season, and lose one year of eligibility (assuming those are the rules for softball like they are for other sports).

    It's a bit boggling because:
    1) transfer from within a small playing conference like ours is a bit unusual. i.e. having to play against your ex-teammates the very next year
    2) small sample size of college production

I don't think ever seen something like this, other than the pitcher who transferred from Texas to A&M, but A&M was moving onto the SEC anyway.

Since it's such a rarity to transfer within the conference, I looked it up:
    https://static.big12sports.com/custompages/pdfs/handbook/rules.pdf

6.3.1 4-2-4 Transfers. A 4-2-4 transfer student-athlete who is in compliance with NCAA Bylaw 14.5.6 must complete one full academic year in residence before being eligible to compete in a sport and forfeit one season of competition unless, in sports other than football or basketball, the director of athletics of the Conference Member Institution of initial enrollment consents in writing to the student-athlete’s enrollment at the second Conference Member Institution. Any consent given relating to the indirect intraconference transfer may be unconditional or conditioned on the student-athlete completing one full academic year in residence at the second conference Member Institution before competing.

Blue: If you're not in football or basketball, you don't have to sit
Red: But if you transfer within the conference, you have to sit one year unless the previous team gives you a free release? The phrase "may be unconditional or conditioned" is the key.

The only player I've seen transfer within the conference and play the next year was when Rachel Rentschier played 2007-2008 for Gail Goestenkors' first year, transferred to TCU and played the 2008-2009 season. Had me scratching my head but I found an obscure bylaw in the NCAA that allows basketball players immediate eligibility of the former coach gives free release. I think that Goestenkors and Rentschier had a handsake agreement to let her go freely if the first year between them didn't work out (she was a Jody recruit).

Andie Malloy transferred from Iowa State to Baylor for volleyball a few years ago; she had to sit out one season, and lost one season of eligibility.

Baker Mayfield was a walk-on at Texas Tech who transferred to OU for football. Initially, he lost one season of eligibility. But, after several appeals, the Big 12 voted that the rule wasn't fair to walk-on players, and that season was restored for him.

With softball having to stretch a scholarship so thinly, I wonder if she was a walkon or not at Tech?

Hadn't thought about that; could be. But, if she was good enough to start several games as true freshman, I just assumed she was receiving some scholarship funds.

She was way too good coming out to not be on scholarship. She was an alternate for the Junior national team. She can rake.

Based on all the softball players getting an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic, perhaps Brianna won't be technically losing one year of eligibility at Texas this coming year as she would be classified as a true freshman athletically, right? o_O But, I believe she would have to sit out the upcoming season unless Tech waives that requirement.

When the relief to all players in all classes was given, I immediately thought of the this type of situation:
Facing 2021 Roster Logjam, Arizona Players Opt To Transfer
The fact that Texas nets more players post-cancellation still boggles me and makes me think more have (?) to be thinking of transferring?

Does she play shortstop? Since that is our main position that needs to be worked out because as of now the only player as of now is Alyssa Washington unless Parker improves alot over the summer but if it comes to bats then I think Washington takes the start

I think we have a lot of options at shortstop:
    1) Popelka
    2) Corona
    3) Washington
    4) Parker (remember her?)

So by happenstance, my daughter played with HS softball with a girl who is on the TLU softball team (this year was her freshman season). They keep in touch with an old team Snap account and I asked my daughter just to ask her ex-teammate about Roche's transfer.

So my daughter texted her former teammate and just asked if Mike White had ever seen her play in person or if Roche had sent film to Mike & staff ahead of her tranfer.

    Her response below:
"He recruited her from all of her achievements and our coach is really close with everyone in the softball world. She's always been a great player. That's usually how our girls end up, big time schools or high in the softball world"

Has Grace Green found a home yet? Her twitter still says "UT 23" so she possibly just quit softball all together?

Interesting, if you look her up in the UT Directory:

    Name: Grace E Green
    Email: gracefacegreen@gmail.com
    UT EID: geg946
Job Title: Athletics Camp Specialist, Softball
    Department: Intercollegiate Athletics
    Office Location: SBS
    Office Address: 2001 COMAL ST
    AUSTIN, TX 78722
    Campus Mail Code: E2400
    Business Card: vCard

First, there's a job title. Second, usually they list their major.

I wondered if there was a similarly named "Grace Green", but her UT bio which is still up lists her middle name as Elizabeth.

If you look up someone obvious like Elish, you get this:

    Name: Miranda Elish
    School/College: College of Education
    Major: Physical Culture and Sports
    Classification: Senior
Job Title: Athletics Camp Specialist - Softball
    Department: Intercollegiate Athletics
    Office Location: SBS
    Office Address: 2001 COMAL ST
    AUSTIN, TX 78722

Hmmmm, she also has a job title.

    More searches:

    Name: Shealyn M O'Leary
    Email: shealyn29@utexas.edu
    School/College: College of Education
Major: Applied Movement Science/Allied Health Professions
    Classification: Sophomore

    Name: Taylor Ellsworth
    UT EID: tne324
Job Title: Athletics Camp Specialist, Softball
    Department: Intercollegiate Athletics
    Office Location: NEZ
Office Address: 403 DELOSS DODDS WAY
    AUSTIN, TX 78712
    Campus Mail Code: E2400

    Unclear.

That sucks but I wish her all the best. I really do think she could have been a great player but like she said plans change and I hope she finds what she loves.

Looking for a team that wants to win more? Mmmm, Texas yeah Connie was coasting. AZ-State not? Must not have gotten along with the coaches there and she was already a 1-time transfer so had to wait to get her degree to do the grad transfer I guess?

So, with the blanket waiver having been approved today, I assume that means that Texas Tech transfer, Brianna Cantu will be eligible to compete in the Spring.
