The city of Seattle is really remarkable. You've got one rational adult (Carmen Best) in the room, but she's being shouted down by a bunch of crazy kids (the city council). If I was her, I'd walk off the job.

A wrongful death suit has been brought against the City of Seattle. Link.

Once the federal courthouse was attacked, federal officials had every right to intervene. The people calling it an "occupation" or "fascist" are just rank idiots. It's "Hitler was a vegetarian" stuff.

Should they end the entire riot? Under the Insurrection Act, I think they can. Should they? I'm not so sure. My general inclination is to let local governments enforce their own laws unless they request help. If they don't want to enforce them, as Portland doesn't want to, then I'd leave the matter to the people. Those who want law and order can use the political process to impose it. If they fail, then they can and should leave Portland as a testament to Left-wing mayhem. I'd guard the federal courthouse with US troops with orders to shoot anyone who vandalizes the building or interferes with federal employees (from federal judges down to the janitors) trying to do their jobs.

I'm sure there are plenty of them. In fact, they're probably a majority. However, we're living in astoundingly stupid times of false binaries and polarization. If you say you oppose the rioting, you aren't just signaling your opposition to violence, you're also signaling indifference to racism and police brutality. And because the feds have intervened, your are signaling support for Trump. I reject all of this. It's all horse ****, but in the current era, that's where our "educated" populace is. So the decent people in Portland are going to keep their mouths shut or go along despite their personal disapproval.

I think OUBubba is illustrating this. Look how careful he's being when it comes to the rioting. He's using very passive and obligatory language about it, and he's directing most of his energy to signal his opposition to Trump and doing so with reckless abandon for facts or evidence. It's more important to him to oppose Trump than it is to oppose rioting. Well, that's polarization at work. He should be able to strongly condemn the rioting without it reflecting on his views for race issues, police brutality, or Trump, but at least in his mind, he can't, whether he'll admit that or not.

And he's ten times more sensible than your average woke, purse-carrying, skinny jeans-wearing, man-bunned, pothead in Portland.

You nailed it, Mr. Deez. The right to free speech and the right to demonstrate peacefully do not include the right to riot, commit arson, deface and destroy property and threaten people. Somewhere in that, elected officials have a responsibility to see that the laws are enforced - and that positively includes allowing the police to enforce the law.

Is there a need to monitor the police and weed out bad officers? Absolutely - but that doesn't mean that "the police" are bad and need to be abolished, it mean that the few bad officers need to be weeded out and held accountable.

Portland is in horrible condition. Sooner or later (and I hope it's sooner) the good, decent, law-abiding citizens of Portland will say "Enough!"

The Seattle police chief has informed business owners that they are on their own against the rioters. The city council has tied her hands. The police do not have the tools to combat mob violence.

Hope that state has a castle doctrine

Mugshot of David Blake Hampe, a "peaceful protester" who "allegedly" stabbed a black Trump supporter in Portland in the early hours of Saturday. His bail has been set to $250,000.

He said I was ignoring the deaths. I just pointed out I didn’t find what he said I was ignoring.

Non-lethal tools like tear gas and tasers can mitigate the damage from riots without having to kill anyone. The unavailability of non-lethal means means more deaths.

mother phucker. Your question was “is death my litmus test?” I ignored it because it was a false litmus test added by the other guy. That’s the reason I said “I found no deaths, did I miss them?” Also, I give The Notebook 4.5 stars.

That’s the only question mark in your post.

The problem is that tear gas is an outlawed weapon. It didn’t stop them from using it to clear out peaceful protestors from Lafayette park for photo op.

Hmmmm. Looks like a former TA in the sociology department of a state university who didn’t get a permanent academic job, so he set out to foment revolution outside the academy. Last seen hanging out at Quackenbushes drinking double espressos and talking about Marx to anyone who would listen. Turned down an offer for a free haircut and shave from the Wooten barbers.

Outlawed where (other than Seattle)? It can be used in Texas.

Tear gas is an excellent tool to disperse rioters without killing, or even seriously injuring, them.

It's not a false litmus test. People have died at these rallies across the US.. None in Portland is not something I would cling to because it very well could happen with the violence occurring. Of course if it happens you'll somehow blame Trump.
