Speaking of fake hate crimes, anyone remember Althea Bernstein. She was a then 18 year old in Wisconsin who said four racists lit her on fire. She went on Good Morning America, got a call from Meghan Markle, and now has her name on NFL helmets

Guess what?

It was investigated and zero evidence was found the incident ever occurred. CNN/MSNBC breathelessly covered the hysteria when the news broke. But nothing about the follow-up. Funny how that works

"Authorities closed an investigation into an alleged Wisconsin hate crime on June 24, saying they failed to find any evidence that 18-year-old Althea Bernstein was the victim of a racist arson attack, as she claimed.

Bernstein made national headlines on June 24 alleging that four white men in Madison lit her on fire, leaving her with burns on her neck and face. The men, she said, had directed a racial slur at her before throwing lighter fluid on her face. The incident was covered by national outlets from CNN to NBC News.

But federal authorities now say that they were unable to corroborate the details of her claims.

"After reviewing all available evidence, authorities could not establish that the attack, as alleged by the complainant, had occurred," U.S. attorney Scott Blader said in a Friday statement. A statement from Madison's chief of police stated that "detectives were unable to corroborate or locate evidence consistent with what was reported."

In a statement released by police, Bernstein and her family said they "appreciate the detailed investigative efforts by all involved in this case....."​

I'm at the point that I default to thinking that any hate crime as being fake.

It's accurate about 98 percent of the time.

 

Actually the only real hate crimes I am aware of are against Jews and other white people particularly elderly whites

 

Hate crimes against Jews are only hate crimes if committed by a honky Christian. Magically, if committed by any other race or religion, it's not.

No hate crime can, by nature and physics, be committed against white people.

So I've in pondered the perpetual **** show that is our media coverage of hate crimes and (far more often) alleged hate crimes. Here's what I think.

Obviously, white-on-black (and other minority) hate crimes do occur. The FBI crime statistics confirm that. There are real cases, but unless they're really horrific (like Dylan Roof or the James Byrd murder), most get little media attention and get no national media attention.

Since there are at least some real cases the media could focus on, why do the stories they run with almost always turn out to be ********? Why is their record so atrocious?

Obviously, I'm speculating and generalizing here, but I suspect that to the media, the hate crime itself isn't the story. The story is the system's reaction to the allegation. If the police are skeptical of the allegation and don't immediately find some white conservative guy and throw him in the slammer, that's what's really going to attract media attention. Is that going to happen in the hate crime cases that are supported by solid evidence? No. If the case is strong, the police are generally going to arrest the bad guy and charge him. Are there exceptions to this such as when the suspect is personally or politically cozy with authorities? Sure, but those are the exception.

It's the weak cases that are usually going to invite skepticism and slow or no action from law enforcement and open up the system to criticism and allegations of racial bias. Because that kind of story can be stretched and twisted to support the anti-cop/systemic racism false narrative that the media likes, they run with these. However, what usually happens is that we find out that the police were slow to arrest and charge someone for a reason - the case was garbage. So the media ends up with egg on their faces. Of course, they mitigate this by putting the obligatory "we were full of ****" statement on the last page of the food section of the paper, or if it's CNN, run the statement at 3:00 a.m. one time and quickly move on.

 

Random Thought - Is "Black" making a strong comeback and stamping out "African-American"? Ever since the advent of "Black Lives Matter", it seems that it's OK again to call a person of dark pigment "Black" and not "African-American". I pretty much don't hear that term any more. I know "those people" are perpetually changing what they want to be called (Colored, Negro, Black, African-American) but it is strange that an old name is now coming back into vogue, at least by my lights. Usually, usage of the "old" label makes you racist.

 

And of course, "color" has made a comeback. My grandmother (born in 1911) used to refer to blacks as "colored," but by the '70s and '80s (when "African American" came into use), that was considered politically incorrect.

As for "black," I think it's a little like "Redskins." It's something that bothered gentry white liberals, not the actual people they claim to represent and pretend to like. I've used the term "black" around blacks hundreds of times over the last 30 years, and none ever showed even a hint of offense to it.

 

Y'all are idoits. A quick primer, pun intended, on color:

- People of color: acceptable
- Colored people: unacceptable

So it's the "of" that makes the difference.

As an aside, it is also akin to the fact that the University of Oklahoma and many other universities invert the order of the school name when they shorten it. I know aggies think it is funny to say tu, but that its for a different reason. It should be uo for Oklahoma.

For them to control words is to control power, and it gives people something to keep up with or be shamed. That explains the evolution of what to call darker than me people.

Apparently, in the early 70's there was a short lived movement for blacks to call themselves Afro-Americans. It quickly fell out of favor due to the Afro itself going from a cool hair style, to an easy joke in a movie when they have a flashback to the day, and the everyone in Basketball Jones looking 'fros.

 

Seattle teacher kicked out a 10 yo for saying he admired Trump. The mother recorded it and then called the teacher who tried every way he could to lie and deflect. The Mother who is from Honduras stayed calm but held the teacher accountable politely letting him know he was lying. She was amazing. and is EXACTLY who we want in our country.

Teacher should be fired for if nothing else telling the kid who he should and should not admire. If he said LeBron James would the teacher be ok with that? I would be curious why the kid admires an athlete instead of someone productive in society.

I agree except that "Redskins" is more akin to "Darkies" I think. The only two black liberals I know who have expressed an opinion both prefer to Black to African-American, the logic essentially being that if you were born elsewhere and lived there for awhile but immigrated here, you might be African-American, Asian-American, or whatever, but if you were born and live here you're just American.
