I've had some healthy debate around this subject over the last few weeks and years, and thought it was time to take it to the HF Nation for their vote.

To me, Tom Herman falls in the category of a good position coach that just isn’t Head Football Coach material.
There’s something the great ones such as DKR and Saban had or have. Everyone has good players. How does a coach make them great?

Great (successful) coaches have a hard-*** quality to them. They are the alpha male in the room and every player knows it and respects it

The don’t need kisses, they need decisive leadership, direction, clear boundaries, consequences, accountability ... imo

I think fraud is too harsh a term for Herman.

The Charlie Strong Experience was a fraud. Three losing seasons, including such stinkers as 60ish yards of offense in a bowl game, 0-24 shut out by ISU, and losing to Kansas, for their first conference win in what, 5 years? Plus he then couldn't cut the mustard at his next job either, run off after 3 years. Nice guy by all accounts, but a fraud of a head coach (don't cry for him, he made 25 million of so from Texas and baring an MC Hammer meltdown, is set for life).

Herman isn't a fraud. He's had 3 winning seasons, 3 bowl appearances and wins, including a whatever they call them now, major bowl, Group of 6, the Sugar Bowl. His teams aren't great, often not good, but they're not completely inept like CSE's were.

If he produced the exact same record at Baylor/TT/ISU/W VA,OSU - any other team in the B12 except Texas or OU, he'd be considered a very good coach. The Mullet is considered a very good coach, though he rarely wins against OU, and they are usually 8-4, 9-3.

However Herman is supposed to do more than he'd done, based on what are considered the advantages he has as head coach of Texas compared to the other, non-OU teams in this conference. The size of the school, the history, the facilities, the AD's money, etc.

To a large extent I think that's true. And there's no reason that by year 4, he should not have one at least 1 conference title. If he can't do that this year, when if ever will he?

I can't call him unlucky either. The 2008 Texas team was unlucky. That team should have played for a National Championship, would have been 50/50 to win in. But both the result of the TT game, and when it was (if the game had been early in the season, Texas drops in the polls, then comes back and beats OU, then wins out, they go to the B12 game instead of OU).

Closest to luck would have been last year's LSU game. Even with a win there, there were still 4 other losses that year, and watching the B12 from mom's house. The B12 title game was what, a 10 point loss? You can say a TD here, a stop there, but that's most games. It's not like a dropped INT on the final drive on the only loss of the year, like in 2008.

Herman's a decent coach, he'd probably be considered very good at a mid school, which is really where he belongs. But he's not winning conference titles at Texas, and there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to. If he can't win one this year, it's time for him to go.

Shame everyone's favorite Athletic Director was foolish enough to allow for a 2 year extension, after two years, no conference titles, 1-2 against OU, 0-2 against OSU, 1-1 against TCU, but did have a nice Sugar Bowl win. Without that, he has one year left, plenty small enough to take care of and hire someone else.

He's just too buddy buddy with the players.

I agree with the assessment that he lacks a little more hard*** quality we apparently need here

But the circumstances surrounding the program would be very difficult for all but about 3 coaches out there and I do believe the Longhorn Republic severely underestimates this reality and is quick to want to put it all on coaching

This may be true but other programs are performing at a high level
Coaching includes leadership and great leaders are rare

Tom Herman is not a fraud! We hired what we wanted him to be rather than what he really is, a mediocre coach with low expectations. I am not alone in buying the hype of his attorney.

That said, he now has about as much support as a cockroach in a four star restaurant. The program is now at a lower point than anytime in Strong's reign. I'm having trouble finding people that want to renew next year. Herman should take his $6.5 million up the hill to get a certain Harvard educated professor to tell him how to spend it, since Herman seems hellbent on kissing the guy's *** every day.

That is interesting about the program being at such a low point in terms of big money fan support. By record the team is far better than under Strong, and is at least competitive in conference.

I would assume it's a combination of fatigue and lack of patience after 10 years of poor seasons, and Herman's intrinsic un-likability.

I'm sure lots of big ego coaches aren't liked by fellow big ego donors. If the results on the field offset it, it's not a problem. But being 0-4 against TCU/OU past two years does not smooth any feathers.

Nope he doesn't. However if what we think of him begins to show up in the form of pulled back BMD pledges and lower season ticket sales, his boss will care and TH will care very quickly after that. Recall that the prospect of low season ticket sales for a potential 4th year for Charlie sealed his fate.

People like Tom Herman always find someone else to point the finger at and blame. He will be doing that from Cal State Redwood City really soon.

After making 35 million + from UT, he could probably buy that school.

Does Texas really need to sign up coaches to 5 year, 6 million dollar a year deals to come here? Then extend them after two winning seasons? Nice work if you can get it, while the rest of the world works to the next paycheck.

Would be nice to have NFL style contracts, with little guaranteed money, and the rest just the contracted rate if the employer wishes to exercise it.

I'd settled for just learning how to tackle, or the OL learning how to block. 6 sacks given up by the OL in the OU game. A bunch of holding penalties, including the killer in OT. 30 yards rushing by the RB's, and most of that was on a run that ended in a fumble.

Someone is teaching the DB's the Flex though, and that is a signature move. I hope when they practice it they have on the H Hogan theme song "I'm a real american" in the background.

Cal State Redwood City cannot raise the $10 to pay off their current coach.
You forgot about receivers who understand the position and know what to do when Sam is scrambling for his life.

I abstained from voting as the specific stance I'd take wasn't really represented in the poll.
Several other posters summed up most of what I've been thinking. For the expectations that were placed on him when he took the job, yes, he has under-performed but I wouldn't call him an outright fraud. He's just not ready for Texas. If he's 'unlucky' then
I think it's a combination of dealing with the wokester movement combined with his nagging penchant for inconsistent performances.
If we were going through this in year one or two of his program I imagine most of the board would be on his side. I'd still be.
Instead he hasn't endeared the fan base after four years, in fact a lot of the opposite, and we stink in a year that was supposed to be our year.
Sorry, but that's on the coach. I'm thrilled to read Sabre's response re: donors. That is exactly what needs to happen. Money is the lifeline
and Tom Herman's program is fraying the rope.

Poorly phrased question. Define unlucky. I’d say injuries have been about normal, just Whittington and the Moore suspension (not that it mattered with DD) are anomalies. Maybe I’m forgetting something. Oh yeah, the Brock twins going Bama was super unlucky

Not a lawn worker but I know it’s a bad job when there are ruts all in my yard.

Not a plumber but I know it’s a bad job when the pipe under the sink leaks.

Not a coach, but I know 1-3 TCU, 1-4 OU, 1-2 OSU, combined 3-9, is doing a bad job as well.
