Talking to a Baylor alum yesterday. He was saying he thinks BU athletics are back to the days of Grant Teaff who ran a clean program.
I kinda remember that as not being completely true but not sure.
Was he St Grant? Ok so I mixed up 2 religions.

They were the dirtiest team in the league. Ask any Horn that played in that era and they will tell you of twisted ankles, stepped on fingers, what we now call targeting. The media loved him and he made good copy. And the SWC was desperate for good copy at the time. (Apparently Fred winning 80% of his games, not cheating, and playing defense didn't fall in that category). He clearly could coach and could get a lot out of players, although they always seemed to lose a game that spoiled a really special season. And SWC officials were sucking farts outta his *** for two decades.

But I'm not bitter, and that's what is really important. I was not a fan.

I got up this morning and attended the 915 church service at a Baptist Church, which is predominately A&M and OU.

I have tried to collect my thoughts and be kind. The Baylor people do believe that Teaff walks on water, and I assure them he does as long as there is a hardwood floor 2-6 inches below the surface.

Why did his starting FB transfer to SFA?

Has any school ever had a S&C coach with a more appropriate name?

Yeah. Anyone can walk on water when the pond is frozen over.

He was an above average coach for an average team. What I didn't like was his last game against us. That featured the most biased officiating I've seen.

100% agree. The worst call I have ever seen (in person) an official make was UT Vs, BU in Teaff's final game against us. The refs were DEFINITELY biased toward Teaff.

Wasn't a fan, but after listening to him speak at my HS Athletic Banquet in 1969, and afterward watching him stop at the local Billups and buy a 6 pack of beer, I figure he must have been an ok guy outside view of the Deacons.

He did more with less. Sort of like Patterson.
He also provoked one of my favorites from Coach Royal, who referred to “the recent unpleasantness in Waco”

    I learned that.
I only viewed him through Horn lenses
But maybe he was a mostly good guy??

If my memory holds (and no one bet even a penny on that) I believe the 92' Baylor game was the only time I heard Mackovic pierce the veil so to speak and comment on officiating. It's okay though. He punched their **** in for the next 5 years but I do find it interesting that his tenure as coach was bookended by losses to Baylor.

You are correct on the 1992 game. And two years later when the ags were on probation, again, we played at Waco on Thanksgiving morning at some horrible time, like 10:30am. Mackovic left James Brown and all of the starting offense in the game with us up 56-35 very late in the game, winning 63-35. When asked afterwards about the appearance of running up the score on Baylor, he sort of half smiled, and told the reporter to refer the question to the Baylor staff and asked for the next question. Teaff was already gone by then, but he had made his point. I was pretty much a Mackovic apologist after that!!

I was at that game in '94 and yes Mackovick was running up the score with a purpose. That '92 game was beyond outrageous for how the refs decided baylor was going to win no matter what.

Baylor wasn’t clean by any means under Teaff. I used to be close with a player who had been one of Dave Campbell’s superlatives and was recruited very heavily by Teaff. At the time, Baylor didn’t have (and may still not have, I don’t know) an athletic dorm, so offering a recruit an apartment was no violation. But the pickup, stereo, Stetson, cash, and handmade cowboy boots that Teaff himself offered to my friend - while sitting in my friend’s living room - sure were.

But the NCAA didn’t care. They had their “shining example,” and nothing could tarnish it.

I wished my friend had taken Baylor’s stuff before he signed elsewhere, thereby pre-Dickersoning Dickerson. But he didn’t.

I think that is exactly right. They looked the other way.
And believe me there are plenty that still think he is a saint.
Does your friend regret doing the right thing?

I lost contact with him years ago, but I think he was happy with his decision not at attend Baylor. He was not especially with where he went, though.
