This Could Prove the Dagger, If Not.....

You've heard it already. This narrative...a reality, really....has gotten enough play now that it could prove the dagger for an already ailing program. The potential, and likely impact of this narrative surrounding the program, will impact recruiting for the foreseeable future, and even a dramatic turnaround for this season would be unlikely to change it.. barring we end up winning out and send a bunch of dudes to the league at years end...both unlikely to occur, anyway. And if the season happens to go much further South...which I for one doubt, and something good doesnt happen on draft day...well, look out below.
I do not believe this all falls on Tom...I do not. But I do believe the only potential remedy for both the perception, affect on recruiting wars, and the reality of it is to make a dramatic coaching change in the form of a Urban Meyer type. Not saying we should, just saying only way to remedy quickly and minimize damage if that were our goal.

If you dont already think this narrative is a very serious threat to an already tenuous position the program is in, then you are grossly underestimating the situation

Texas ranked among worst college football teams in developing recruits

Sorry guys....I really wanted to be positive and even have some fun this week. The next battle in this war is won or lost Saturday between the lines....but I'm tellin you this wont go away quickly or easily and is already a major problem for us.

George Bailey No beans in my chili, thank you

Over and over and over again we hear how soft the players in this program are. There are exceptions to the rule, Diggs, Duvernay, and Ford are examples. But until we get some guys in the NFL, and get them there via high first-round picks that perform big-time, that label is gonna stick. Watching Cosmi's play the past couple of weeks hasn't given me much hope.

I agree. There are systemic problems in the program that need to be fixed. The recent unpleasantness is water under the bridge. But there appear to be much deeper fissures than outside/social issues afflicting UT football.

There's going to be a big push for an overhaul when the season's over.

And our coach, no doubt, has failed to date......but I've been banging the "theres alot more wrong with our program" drum for about 4+ years now and most didn't or dont want to accept it.
My thesis states there is something that isn't pure football enough about our culture. It just isnt a real good football culture right now. It's a cult that isnt even cool no mo in a town where nothing about it screams "football" filled with fans who act like preschool children.

I've been saying this for 20 years. UT is not about winning football games the way Alabama, LSU, Ohio St, or OU are. UT as an institution thinks that it is an elite academic university, and focusing too much attention on football will hurt them with the universities they think are their peers. It is unseemly to them. It's just like MSM outlets that care more what their friends think of them than making money (ie boosting their ratings by not being so partisan). They still wanna be invited to the right cocktail parties, after all.

I think watching Malik Jefferson on Hard Knocks was a sad glimpse into what might have been. They talked about him as if he was a fragile little puppy just trying to tread water and hopefully make a squad, and he's arguably our biggest "get" over the past 10 years. So if Malik was supposed to be such a sure-fire NFL guy, what does that make everyone else on the team?

We're at a crossroads where we need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the type of program we want to be. We can watch the OK States and TCUs and ISUs of the world play against us like it's the Super Bowl, but we can't match their intensity or preparation. So we need to blow it up and start over with those factors first in mind, and some kind of gimmicky system to run with it that catches people off guard. If we win with it, we'll get those good NFL players in future recruiting classes. If we don't win with it, we'll be right in the same place as we are now, so there's no "regression" in terms of trying it out. We've seen Power-5 teams pull this off, although I don't like being lumped in with the likes of those teams as We're Texas and they're not.

Can’t agree that we need to run the run and shoot or swinging gate or Statue of Liberty play in order to beat the mid range teams in this conference.

That, plus the excuse that say Iowa St plays harder for Texas so little chance to win is loser talk. Indiana plays Ohio state as hard as they can and they still always lose. No one at a quality historically good school uses that as an excuse. Teams give OU their best shot and yet lose.

Texas just needs a good coach who can develop players, manage games, and run a unified program. Position is still open.

to your point somewhat, I had a good friend who was a tenured professor but also a loyal fan. Used to laugh at the faculty meetings and cocktail parties where most other Profs lamented and disdained anything with the athletic dept especially Football. Several times "committees" sent letters of protestation to Powers
I imagine schools like Stanford and maybe Michigan have the same academia attitude.
Schools like ou Alabama Clemson etc not so much

The overall vibe reminds me of the last days of the SWC. Texas (save for one season with Coach DM) was never really a national title contender. We were stagnating. The move to a different conference energized the program because it forced us to play UP to our competition.

That combined with the hiring of Coach MB, turned the program in a completely different direction.

I suspect we'll see both a new coach and a new conference in the near future...

Not sure about that. The rot in academics is country wide. They all look at the same Twitter posts, read the same newspapers, vote the same way.

Lack of sucess in the county’s largest revenue making Athletic Department is entirely related to the coaches.

I would like to know the count of how many fans at DKR when full are from out of town like me. I wonder because I think the point of all this, the attitude of players and the entire new Austin culture are related to the current football state of affairs. Interesting question that I hadn’t previously put together in the explanation of what is happening until the suggestion by Rain and others.

    Nash,

Interesting thoughts. I seldom stay over in Austin anymore. I drive in from Houston and back, arriving home between 2-3 after night games. The allure of Austin has been lost in the Southern California bling.

Sorry guys. For anyone who saw that weird 3-tiered random post of mine and thought I'd lost my mind or were confused by it. It was an inadvertantly collage of about 3 different thoughts and replies that somehow got posted in error.

We will only stay over after night games; otherwise, for 11 games we will go to Matts and then drive back to Dallas. For the 2:30 games, we will grab a burger somewhere before the game and drive back to Dallas after the game is over.

Austin has changed and will continue to change. All change does is push us further into the Hill Country or into Fayette or Washington Counties when we want to stay over for a couple of days. Nothing Austin can do will distract from game day.

This year is an odd season but 15,750 UTEP, 17,500 TCU to 18,200 BU are the approximate attendance numbers out of 24K capacity. so 70% attendance total with the obvious empty student section.

The idea of adding LHB only came up after the realization that there was plenty of room.

A flagship university with 50K+ students/staff and 550K+ alumni/fans in a market of 2.5M has difficulty in selling out 100K seats. One reason the SEZ was designed to optimize revenue per seat was the understanding that adding a net of 12-15K seats to mirror the NEZ was not realistic. So premium seating was the decision.

I have been attending games at DKR since the age of 11 on a regular basis as a fan, a student, an alumni and a LHF season ticket holder.

In the last 22 +/- years of MB/CS/TH I can remember the actual sellots were always with opponents that travel well like Nebraska, tOSU, Norte Dame, USC and LSU. Sellout is actual standing room only not all tickets sold and stands empty in the corners.

With the students/staff of 50K and 550K alumni filling 100k should be the norm but it is not. We can blame the coaches, players, win/loss, but we should include a discussion of the tradition/ culture that exists today as part of the issue.

Has DKR ever had a waiting list for season tix requests or just about 65K?

I don't think the professor's attitudes at cocktail parties have any bearing on the performance of the football team.

The deeper thinking these posts are causing me to undertake are making me very sad, melancholic type sad. I hate it because since retiring in 2013 I have been able to avoid deep thinking. My last bastion of fun and pure relief is fading.

    I feel you, Nash.
I'm in a different boat...different season. I married later, my wife is younger, and we have 5 young kids. Between father, husband, taking care of property, business, ministry, etc....I have very few "guilty pleasures".
The list is getting shorter and shorter still...
    This is no longer pleasurable.

Why wait? We will completely miss the Early signing period if this goes on much longer. In these days that means NO recruits. This cannot be fixed in February and it is not getting better.

So, with stadium expansion completed by 2021, and the Big 12 likely to expire in 2025, which conference provides teams that will travel well/generate sell-out buzz in Austin?

That's the key and building better depth at each position, so there is no fall off when a guy comes in off the bench.

@MajorRules00 why is the B12 likely to expire in 2025 before the GOR expires in 2032?

If they continue to put the product on the field we have seen for the last 10 years with little hope in resurrection, then income will circle the toilet bowl. Fans, advertisers and BMDs stop funneling money into UT sports. Sometimes good and necessary decisions aren't cheap.

Every source I've seen says the GOR is done in 2025. Of course I could be wrong. Is there a source that confirms 2032 is the new GOR term?
