It must be a weak draft class of offensive linemen if Cosmi is projected as a high pick. His signature block for Sam was the ‘LOOKOUT’ because you’re fixing to get creamed!

Hmmm, millions of dollars, or hangout with Tom Herman for a few more days/weeks (hopefully "days")? I think I'll take the millions of dollars, and preserve my knees!

Quite possibly the easiest decision in the history of the world!

He's not nearly as good as Connor Williams was, and Connor has struggled mightily in the pros.

I used to be in the " screw them" camp, but over the last couple years I'm in the "depends on the situation" camp. With this one I clearly agree. If he's projected to go in the first round its because they see lots of potential due to lack of proper development here. If we were playing for a conference championship I'd be upset. But considering the crap coaching and crap environment I'd be gone too.

If he does opt out I say good luck!

Whatever we may think of their integrity, their motives or their wisdom, we can look for more of these in the next few days. Cosmi may be the first but he won't be the last.

Risk a freak / career ending injury in the couple of meaningless games left while playing for a lame duck coach -or- get a jumpstart on your financial future and protect your body for that. I know what I'd pick. Best of luck in the pros Cosmi. I think any longhorn player with NFL draft potential should do the same. This season is over.

If anyone wants to opt out with games to play, they need to learn a life lesson - if you don't fulfill your obligations there are consequences. If you opt out you need to repay the school for a semester.

Yeah, like a Marine with one week left in a tour “opts out” in an Operation in the sandbox ... let’s talk about the risks there and protecting your body. I’d say losing your life or a limb trumps 2.5 year several million dollar non guaranteed contract NFL career.
And also about the difference between the two, admittedly are obvious. I know that, I’m talking about being part of something bigger than yourself.
Not one 19 year old Marine would opt out- I assure you, but football players do. Yes big differences between the humbled and the coddled entitled.

From 247 Sports: "Cosmi's decision comes after Texas was eliminated from the Big 12 title chase with a 23-20 loss to Iowa State in Austin on Friday.

Sources told Horns247 other members of the Longhorns' team were also considering opting out of UT's final two regular-season games, but those sources added head coach Tom Herman and his assistants were doing everything they could to keep the team together through the end of the season.
    "

If true Tom has just about lost this team. I won't be surprised if there is a wave of transfers following the season, unless we make an outstanding hire. Hopefully a seasoned coach with championship skins on his belt. I understand there is a meeting regarding the football program sometime tomorrow. It will include, among others, the AD and a number of BMDs. That's all I'm aware of.

Hate to burst y'alls red, white & blue bubbles, but straight out of boot camp? Yes, they'll run through walls for you. Give 'em a few months out in the fleet and you've got just as many shitbirds and little entitled attitudes to deal with as what you'd find with college kids. Don't believe it? Go to any base of your choosing and take a look at the C.O.'s Article 15 Non-Judicial Punishment docket.

“Opt out” before season starts = OK
“Opt out” during season = Quitting

    Cosmi quit.

When players started to quit before the bowl game, I thought it was just a matter of time before they started quitting during the regular season.

Now the quitting line is when a team is no longer able to win a conference championship. But like all lines in the sand, this one will move, from impossible to win a CC, to difficult, then hard, then not easy, etc. Eventually players will just quit during halftime if the team is too far behind to come back, and thus they're out of CC contention.

"Sorry coach, I'm forgoing the remainder of the season, second half included. Could you coordinate the bus so I can go home now and don't have to wait for the rest of the team to finish the game?".

Personally, if I was a GM of an NFL team, I'd not even waste a glance at this dude. If he quits during the season in college, why won't he quit in the NFL when the team is no longer in the playoff hunt?

How fitting for him that Texas lost the ISU game due to the OL collapsing like a house of cards on 3rd down, forcing the FG try from 57 yards instead of a makeable distance. Failed on the play, quit on the team. Good riddance.

George that was not my experience. I stand firmly behind my statement.
This is about a conscious quitting on your team , not getting into an E club brawl or a day awol because you met some girl and getting called on the carpet.
This isn’t about me, Cosmi owes me nothing... it is about his teammates and he quit on them.

I worked in the military justice system for 27+ years, so it was my experience.

I do agree with you about Cosmi, though. This stuff about 'preparing for the draft' just doesn't hold water with me. Most of these guys nowadays are just semi-pro players waiting to be called up to the big leagues. And while he is totally within his right to do so, this is just another thing about today's game that deadens my enthusiasm for it. Transfer portals, woke social activists, and flashy 'gameday experiences' all add up to just cheapen the whole thing.

We had a player do just this earlier in the year (Foster quit but it was after a game, I think) and our spineless coach let him back on the team. In this “It’s all about me” world that we’re living in, this is going to become more common. Need a provision in their scholarships that requires them to pay back the value received from a school prior to quitting.

George a lot of my angst is that this selfishly was my last hope for sports, I stopped watching baseball after the first strike, I will not even get into the NBA, stopped watching pro about five or so years ago so for me college football ...university of Texas football was it.
I know that this doesn’t move the needle for anyone, and I understand that, but if this **** continues I’m out.
I do agree this is his right and I’m not dense enough not to understand his rationale, but I am really big on loyalty and teamwork have been my whole life and this is anti-loyalty and anti-team. But I do agree again that this really is none of my business... the portal, the bowl opt outs had me- this is well beyond that.
I know this is crazy but I’m at a point where I wish they would just stop all athletic scholarships, the kids want to play football fine if not fine

    This is a wierd season.
Many rules implemented that will not be here next year.
I was just glad to have football to watch this year.
But, for the most part, this year is a write off for me.
Just enjoying watching the games that actually get played.
If players want to opt out for fear of health repercussions or NFL dreams it really doesn't bother me this year.
    Good luck Mr. Cosmi.
Hope I can follow you in the NFL.

I just read a long article about player insurance is not what its cracked up to be ... I know, shocker that Insurance Companies prey on players with large premiums and very little payout without a fight.

BUT I still hate quitting on your team. What if Christian Jones or whoever the new left tackle whiffs on a block or two and the defender knocks QB Sam into next week and causes him a concussion ???
