I've told the story of how my little league coaches in the mid 70s in Fort Worth said worse things to us than what coaches can probably get away with today.

For anyone hedging on Tom's recruiting.....
Not trending well. NSD not too far off and we aren't in top 10 for '21....'22 looking very sour.
I'm posting this because I thought we were pretty set for 21. Not the case...and momentum has definitely shifted against us in general.

    Burton:

According to a high-ranking official at The University of Texas, Urban Meyer is mulling a return to coaching.

Open issues that remain are his health and whether or not he is convinced that his hard-charging approach is “still relevant in the new era of player personal freedom.”

This report comes immediately following a trip returning from Columbus to Austin of a UT emissary less than 30 minutes ago.

Meyer’s health concerns have been mentioned previously. His approach has not.

Again, it remains a fluid situation, one where we could see twists and turns and misdirection until Tom Herman is dismissed

If this is accurate, I read it as Meyer is not so much worried about his "approach" as he is whether the culture that now permeates our school and team will support his "approach." If so, that's a fair concern

    Yep. I'll rehash this one....

I was maybe 8 or 9 years old. Late August in Fort Worth at Wedgewood Middle School. During this particular hitting drill, if you didn't hit hard enough, the head coach pointed to the track and said "Hook 'em". While I found out later in life he was a huge Texas fan, what he meant was go run a lap in the heat in full pads. After several laps, I got pissed and started hitting hard. Surprised I became a Texas fan with the phrase "Hook 'em" being linked to a painful memory.

He'd probably be locked up these days for such a thing.

I dont know, but this^^^^^^ reflects a big difference between me and these kids these days.
They think they should be able to control everyone and everything that makes them uncomfortable.

My dad was a 6'4" 1st Class Sergeant who was a firm guy, but I never heard him say one cussword...and almost never lost his temper. He always said the only reason people cuss is because they are too stupid to think of anything else to say. (I'm not denouncing nor promoting that particular notion here)
I wasn't even allowed to say gosh, golly, or gah.
I don't particularly like cussing, and I dont do it.
    BUT......
If I were a player and some coach got in my face and was screaming and cussing it wouldn't faze me one bit. I signed up, I signed on. .its not my place to try and control the things or people I don't like. My place is to listen, learn, respect, and perform... and I dont have to like, love or be comfortable with everyone or everything to do what I am supposed to do.
    That's the difference

What's stunning to me is how risky picking a coach has become.

True, but this sort of thing is done using fractional ownership aircraft vs privately owned jets usually, so while you are correct, it could be the Urban. Or it couldn't be. Who knows?

Charlie Strong was so bad, Brando would have been a hot commodity compared to him back at that time.

TFB -- (while they are good at recruiting, they appear to be out of the loop on this hire. But we will see)

First, in terms of where things are with Urban Meyer, we continue to hold the same position we’ve held for a bit now. Meyer is who Texas wants, they’re willing to pay a lot of money for him, there is a chance he ends up at Texas but we’d say it’s not a great one at the moment.

Source said that CDC is the type that wants to make a splash hire but said that he also is the type who would want the hire to be ‘his hire’. In the case of Urban, the play is just too big to say no too, but source seemed to indicate that it’s not necessarily his style to look for someone who wouldn’t be CDC’s guy. In other words, not sure you get a ton of credit as an AD for throwing a bazillion dollars at one of the best coaches of this generation. Source did add that they wouldn’t be surprised if the idea of replacing Herman with Urban, given there is a bit of a divide between the two, isn’t sitting well with CDC. Said it’s not his style to attract that kind of story, if you will.

It's just not necessary. Tony Dungy never cursed or even raised his voice. He had a pretty good run.

If CDC is just trying to stroke his own ego and legacy and would bypass Myer because of it, I don't really know what to say.

Edit: And, Texas, after the summer's BS, is beyond the point of being the choir boy head coach job. I don't care anymore about Myer's past. He's a damn good coach, and that's what Texas needs.

I think TFB is off the reservation with that one. They went on to speculate where CDC might turn if Meyer doesn't work out. They quote a source, who was clearly speculating. First he mentioned Brian Kelly, and then Gary Patterson (who they mention turned down aggy before Jimbo). It all seems a stretch to me. They have a paysite and must generate something

    More Ketchum

11:50 a.m. update: I learned via a very trusted source moments ago that BOR chairman Kevin Eltife was not in Ohio yesterday and part of the traveling party that went to Columbus. We're still working to get details on who was actually involved in the trip, but this source was strong in saying that Eltife (who is very much leading the process) was not in Ohio. "The real question is whether Urban wants to coach again," the source said without giving out any other details.

    ****

This is still a story that we're working to gain meaningful details on, but I do want to confirm that we have been told by a source with connections to the current Texas Board of Regends that representation from UT met with Urban Meyer in Columbus for what is being described as the "first" meeting with Meyer in discussions about him becoming the next Texas head football coach.

We're still chasing details from the meeting, but it seems like a very important step in the conversations between both parties has occurred.

The ball remains in Meyer's court. We'll keep you posted as details emerge.

Cool and interesting chart Rain. 5 Big 12 members in there too. I think another aspect to consider in the scheme is that in all honesty the conference has not been real strong the past few years.

    $$$$$

We keep seeing how much Texas may be willing to pay! 50-60 mill over contract of 5-7 years.

When is enough $$$ not enough $$$ for coaches (college and pros) and players at pro level?

Evidently, when you or at the bottom or near it and money is in abundance, the move to secure the traditions / heritage /prestige of some universities (Texas, Ala, LSU, Aggie, OU, tOSU and few others there is a way!!

Need the change NOW; waiting for next year will throw UT off many more years.
