After Casey's performance today, Sam Ehlinger can't be the QB next year

Sam has been a great leader for us. But it is Casey's turn.

I say this knowing full well that Sam Ehlinger wants to be a longhorn for life. I don't think he's even considering leaving the program early.

But Tom Herman needs to make it clear to Sam that he's not the guaranteed starter anymore.

Casey has almost had two pics and two of his nice throws were very dangerous passes. I’m not saying he won’t be good just that the jury is still out at 11:48 left in the 4th

Typed as Casey throws a bomb for a touchdown :bevo:

He’s gonna go anyway. I don’t think the shoulder was injured that badly, his exit was precaution and signals draft

Yeah, the Sam / Herman combo has delivered 3 loss plus seasons. Time for Herman to sink or swim with a new QB and see if a CC can be won.

Would love to see him drafted, but poor accuracy all season plus velocity issues does not translate to NFL success.

Shouldn't be guaranteed to be the starter, and no way should he be considered for the starter, are two very different things.

Good question. I would respect Sam if he came back, but seems like his time is up.....sadly.

One half doesn't make a star. I remember how in love most were with Garret Gilbert after the Alabama game. That didn't work out too well. Tap the brakes, boys. I think Sam is leaving. If he stays, fine with me. But I wouldn't mind seeing some new blood under center.
But I will always love Sam and his passion and love of being a Longhorn.

If Sam comes back he needs to understand that Casey is going to have significant playing time.

If Herman is going to be back next year, it only seems fair for him to have another quarterback under him. If we’re worse, it’s on Herman. If we’re improved— maybe Sam (while a Longhorn Legend) wasn’t the national championship QB we thought he was.

Come on man. Geez, you think Sams injury was not enough to keep him out? This is Sam.

We’ll see. If Sam is combine healthy, maybe it was draft-related. Either way, Sam has been a great QB.

Bud, we aren’t talking Caden Sterns or Cosmi here, this is the iron man who is not going to be a 1st round daft selection

Well it's going to be enjoyable to watch the QB battle in the Spring. IMO Card is a top notch QB and can run also, not Thompson fast but fast enough. And if Card reads the defense better or has a quicker release or has better timing with his receivers then he may be the starter next year. I don't count that out.
Both of these QBs have the benefit of seeing Sam's leadership on the field and in the clubhouse. Thank you Sam.
I'm not going to underestimate Sam's influence on these two quarterbacks.
The QB battle will certainly be the main topic in the spring.
We should be Stout next year. my biggest concern is our wide receiver speed we need a burner or two.

Thompson showed enough to put the deep vertical passing game back into the playbook. Sam could not have made those long over the middle passes with any consistency. With Thompson and If Card is as good as advertised, the Texas RB's are going to start to have some very fruitful days with the vertical game pulling an LB away from the LOS.

Casey impressed me with his arm strength and accuracy. Kudos to yurcich for keeping the play book open for him. Came out gunning.

We were in the Alamo Bowl against a crappy team that had only been practicing for like 7 weeks. A little perspective would be nice...

Understand your comment, but the "good" that was displayed had nothing to do with how much practice the defense had. If you have bigger, faster talented WR's and a QB can get them the ball downfield the offense is going to win more often than not.

If the program is well run, there are no "guaranteed starters" at any position.

Good point...but I think most here are just looking at what CT came out and did against the same defense that played us (w/ Sam) to a 17-10 ball game until that point in the game. Really hard to tell in a bowl game...but I've been advising people not to sleep on CT for a year now. He adds a few things we've been lacking, though I'm sure he'll hit some bumps.

On some level you are correct. However, was Phillips ever going to beat out Street? Was whoever going to beat out Thomas or Jammer? Was Colt ever going to beat out VY? Was the QB Committee that ended up with Gilbert ever going to beat out Colt? College guys do not buy into every position is up for grabs. In fact most of the time they just ignore such statements because they think they know everything.

The college player is in the middle of the maturation cycle. The Rah-Rah of High school isn't going to raise the level of play in College as it does in High School. For example, tell a bunch of HS Players that the Opposition is going to celebrate a victory by taking out their girlfriends after the and you will get a near super-human effort. Chuch Curtis was a master of this at Garland 1963-64. He instinctively knew when to put fear into his players and when to back off. Worked well enough for Garland to win back-to-back State Championships. Curtis moves on to SMU and he could not motivate anyone. Older wiser means different strings to pull (see Saben).

Who thought Sam was NC QB ? He has been terribly inaccurate all his career. I knew the guy didn't really have IT when his HS coach took the ball out of his hands in the State Title game on the last play when they needed a score. He is a good enough to get you close, but not good enough to get you to the promised land type of player.

Just wait til' next year. The first game Casey throws 2 picks and completes less than 60% of his passes the idoits will be calling for Hudson.
