After Casey's performance today, Sam Ehlinger can't be the QB next year

I have posted all year that Sam was hurt in the Tech game and has been playing hurt all year. Last night he admitted same.

I want to see Casey beat his dad's school. Haven't read anything abut it, but I seem to recall that Thompson's father went to HS in San Antonio. If so, it was nice to see him return to his father's old stomping grounds and succeed.

Also, I though Casey was from one of the Tulsa area HS, not OKC?

Correct. If one has been paying attention he has worn the full length leg supports since that game. The leg injury he sustained has prevented him from pushing off when throwing.

I believe he’s actually from New Castle. I just call everything north of Ardmore OKC. Ha

So I guess a 75 percent Sam is better than a 100 percent Thompson? I don't think so. Not enough to not play Thompson.

And one has to wonder what Tom told him to get him to "unportal".
This^^^^^ along with that^^^^^ + his performance last night as well as staffs well documented impression of him in practices makes it very high probability he gets the reins for 2021 and that Card would have to look like the clear next Colt or Vince to keep that from happening...
JQJ saw the writing on the wall...

Last time I saw CT getting extended reps was in the Spring game of 2019. He has definitely progressed a long way from what he showed that day. I'm on board, let's see what the man can do.

    Gerry Hamilton was impressed

Bijan Robinson and Alfred Collins are the best freshmen duo since the 2001 class:
Bijan is going to be a star, and if Texas can win enough games an All-American and potential seat at a Heisman Trophy ceremony. Alfred Collins will be a top 20 pick with the ability to be a top 5 level pick. Two true freshmen with that talent level and NFL draft ability has been seen in the same class in Austin since Cedric Benson and Derrick Johnson signed in the 2001 class. Both went on to be first round picks, and that is where Robinson and Collins should be in two years.

Joe if CT graduates in May that kid has some serious smarts. Was he an early enrollee? He must have brought some HS credits with him and attended every summer session.
I saw him in the Spring Game and had a different impression Sangre. I remember passing being ok to good but his running was eye catching. Again, just from memory but I came away thinking happy thoughts about him. :hookem:

I, too, came away with happy goose bump feelings about Thompson's performance in the spring game. Now I have happy chicken pox feelings about Thompson.

Yes, good academics and was an EE. He can usually be found on the B12 Commish's "honor roll" and just made the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 First Team

I am certainly coming to the impression that JQJ's portal was as much about Casey and what he was showing as it was any other issues, I agree he saw the writing on the wall.

Both Card and JQJ generated a certain amount of UT-related media talk, and then Ewers committed which caused a lot of buzz. It's easy to see him not wanting to get skipped over and forgotten. And then things quickly changed with Ewers and JQJ which probably made it much easier to hold him. Now he's the favorite in the clubhouse. I bet he has a very fun New Years with the family this year.

Who knows what everyone is thinking today if the doctors had not insisted Sam be held out of the 2nd half. All these sort of "what if" questions are part of what makes sports so great.

I noticed a pretty clear delineation between the Dallas-area hs football watchers and everyone else. Those who did watch JQJ closely in HS were "true believers" -- that he has that something special that will make him a winner in college. Most of the rest favored Card.

It was easy to cheer for Shane's success at SMU. But what if JQJ quarterbacks his next school into the CFP before Texas makes it? That will be tougher to watch.

I love Sam but I think the bromance that Tom has for him did both of them a disservice.

Sam has been TH’s crutch and security blanket. Sam’s leadership has been great but we had other good options and you see better Coaches bench better QBs for poor play (or put into time out or however you want to look at it) all the time. this is college football and Tom Brady he ain’t. There have been plenty of games were the offense was stalled and Sam was part of the issue. And Tom Herman didn’t have the balls to sideline him and see if the next man up could give us a spark.

What’s more inexcusable IMO is making him play hurt. Sam has been rumored to be playing through injuries for most of his career. he has probably used up and abused his body (and head) because of it. Sure done if it’s on Sam but you know Tom Herman was more than willing to let the kid play hurt than to make the hard decision to go with QB #2

Don't get me wrong. The impression I took from the 2019 Spring game was "good potential, but God help us if we have to rely on him". Well, now that potential he flashed looks to have grown tremendously.

We have all seen Sam sometimes miss open receivers down the middle. I remember one game last year where we ran the same delayed release for Brewer -- and he was literally uncovered each time for the TD but Sam missed him each time. It may have happened 3 times. In the same game. But now, after hearing him finally go into some detail about the physical pain and injuries, I cannot help but wonder if shoulder/elbow/hand pain caused some of those accuracy issues.

His accuracy in that spring game was nothing like what we saw in this bowl game. And I dont know the explanation for it

Several of us around here have been saying for probably 2 years that Sam has been playing hurt. He's been abused with poor O line play and all the QB runs.

I suspect that the games Sam played completely healthy were well under half of his starts. One of the announcers quoted Sam as saying he couldn't remember what it felt like to play at 100%. The pounding we subjected him to is another indictment of recruiting and development. Marginal o-line play and marginal running back play doomed Sam.

Only in southern Dallas County. Everywhere else it is either the Southlake Carroll or Allen QB. Half of the people in Dallas County (the transplants) have never been south of the river.

Dont know what went on behind the scenes, but I would have loved to see a wide open competition between Thompson, Card and JQJ. Not that this was likely to happen (I'm not real sure TH doesnt make promises and allegiances ..or at least marriages in his mind to a degree he shouldn't)....but the injury took it off the table for this year and put him firmly in the back, deservedly or not. Hard to imagine we were going to keep these three plus Ewers....but to lose 2 of those...is really too bad. I think JQJ would have been a perfect fit for the talent we have and what Tom likes to do. We'll never know and, who knows...could always work out for the better

Talking about injuries to Sam I think he suffered when he ran 4 times at the goal line against Ga. either the second or third time he looked stunned to me. If you look close you can see him sort of stagger. Scared me at the time.

No one doubts that guy's toughness and tolerance for pain
Besides that, there was also the post-ou game situation
So, despite the overriding theme of this being a "turbulent period" for UT football, I think he will always be remembered fondly

I wonder... why is it that Robinson has had several runs the past few games where he was barely touched until he reached the second level, but our other backs only seemed to have very few the past couple of years? Is the line that bad for our other backs, do our other backs lack vision or perhaps Robinson is just special. I suspect the other backs lack vision as I always thought Sam saw the holes much better than our backs and Robinson is special. I also suspect that perhaps we have been unfairly beating up Hand (not in recruiting of course).
