That's what got me to my bottom. Being terribly hungover on a Sunday morning in a drunk tank is not pleasant. The arresting cop and jailers were totally professional and treated me better than I deserved. When my wife of 30 years showed up to pick me up (I wasn't at all sure she would, but she did) she was ready with her speech. Quit this nonsense or I'm getting a lawyer. I took her at her word. The combination of trouble with the law and her ultimatum brought me to a fork in the road. I took fork that said "Here are the steps to a way out." December 28th that dear sweet woman and I celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary. Without those steps, there would have been no anniversary being celebrated.

I didn't take it that way at all, HIC. I truly can laugh today.

Glad that when you got to that fork, you took it. Great having you around here, too.

    5 names I’d rather have without a deep dive into what is out there;
    Brian Kelly
    Kyle Whittingham
    Luke Fickell
    Kalani Sitake
    Jeff Traylor

Heard something this morning that got me thinking. As I recall when he got the UW job, Sark was the "young, hot coach" who was the can't-miss hire at the time. He goes to UW and has enough success to get the USC job, then we know what happened. Fast forward a few years and, while there are admittedly obvious differences, Herman is along a similar path.

While I am ecstatic he's gone, Herman will land on his feet somewhere and my hope is he matures and learns from all this to find success. What I feel we are getting in Sark is that guy - a great football mind who wasn't ready for the spotlight when it found him the first time, spent time away from it growing and overcoming, and is now that same great mind with the life experience to match. Many of us thought Herman was the solution in 2017 but clearly he was lacking in areas on and off the field. SS has the off the field stuff nailed down, and if the on the field piece is what it's always been, or is perceived to be, we just hired the total package.

I've not been through what he, and some of you here, have been through but I am so immensely impressed with those that possess the strength and character to overcome and thrive. That, to me, is the piece that could make this hire special and I for one am excited to see things play out.

If he was driven to drink at USC, then he’ll be dropping acid at Texas after year 1.

Brian Kelly is not leaving Notre Dame
Kyle Whittingham lost to TH last year
Luke Fickell - did you watch his clock management this weekend?
Kalani Sitake - Maybe, but being successful at BYU does not translate to Texas
Jeff Traylor - a strong maybe. Like Campbell, not sure ready for this level

IMO the only one that brings a better resume might be Kelly, but i don’t like his character...

Did we offer Kelly? Money talks and he’d get better athletes here.
Whittingham at Utah is dealing with second tier athletes and he is hard nosed. He’d get better athletes here.

I used to be involved in horse racing—Sarkisian head coach record is worse than Herman’s. That can’t be ignored.

Another interesting parallel I was thinking about - Shaka has been on the hot seat the last couple years and probably would have been fired after last year had it not been for COVID. This year, he's got talent and experience and (not to jinx it) so far the on court results have been great. Herman was on the hot seat the last few years, but this year had the talent and experience (not to mention the "down" year the competition was supposed to have) and, well, you know.

    Yep, Herman leads there, too.

And, from what I’ve read and heard- he was not terribly well liked by a bunch of players. Pre-game mug downs notwithstanding.

We’re getting ready to see how well connected Sark is in the recruiting and coaching worlds. If he assembles an all-star supporting cast and if he has the connections we think he has, my expectation is that most of us will be very pleased.

Demarvion seems like a real character.
Must have been a trip growing up in a town that literally has one intersection and one stop sign. Expect a big year and some watch lists from him next year...assuming he responds to this transition well.
On a side note.....thinking most of our guys will be waaay better off with a coach they won't be comfortable calling "My nigga"

    I love this^^^^^^ stuff.
No, really....I always have both needed, loved, and responded to someone getting in my face to help bring out my best.
The fact that it is now frowned upon is so silly to me.
Saw Campell chewing out a guy the other day and it gave me chills.
Never saw Herman even look at a guy sideways....
I still miss a guy who was a mentor, boss, and eventually friend when I was around 26-27 who literally helped change my life and make me a better man....He was in my face almost daily and relentlessly pursued me to pursue my best and accept nothing less.
Some guys might melt these days if even frowned at, but I digress....

There is a big difference of getting onto a player verbally for a mistake vs spitting in their face on national TV. While totally different personalities, I see Pelini and Herman as very similar in maturity. Nebraska kept Pelini around long enough to destroy their program. Hopefully we cut ties just in time. For the record, I like a coach who knows when and how to show anger on the field to motivate players and energize a crowd. Neither Bo or Tom have that skill.

You are right iis...and I'm not familiar with the Pelinni incident you posted. May have been too far IDK...I just saw a coach chewing someone out, not sure what all was going on there.
Nobody get me wrong here...there are clear limits that can be crossed and ways to get mad, get in someone's face to push them to be better, get riled up at a failure while still aggressively pushing them towards ultimate success.
And, I'll add one more point to this, when I think of all the great coaches past or present, most all are guys that balance confident, calm and in charge of their emotion(and the team) with yet the propensity to "go off hard" on you, other coaches, or the team when appropriate and won't hesitate to do so if warranted.
    The goal is perfection.

Mary, Mother of God, surely no one is making a positive coaching reference to Bo Pelini? In addition to coaching skills that rival TH, his motivational skills, although very differently delivered, had the same result; he could generally beat lousy teams, never beat good teams/rivals and was not nearly as good as Herman in bowl games.

This is a guy that after running the Nebraska program into the ground, held a team meeting in which he referred to the AD as someone who has intercourse with their Mother, and the University Administration as body parts that would be grabbed by the current lame duck president.

Tom Herman was Bill Belichick compared to this guy. Don't confuse "in your face motivation" with being a dick. Ask the LSU folks and Bob Stoops how much they enjoyed his cameo appearance's with those programs.

It wasn't my intention to credit Bo in any way, personally. I dont know much about him or the pic in question...and I agree with your sentiment. Just using a pic of a coach getting in a players face to make a point. I saw Campbell chewing out a guy the other day, and I was glad to see it...thinking we could have used alot more of it here the last two regimes.
Maybe I should have chosen a different point of reference than this pic to make my point...but my point is the same nonetheless.

Rain wasn’t pro Pelini. I think he just recognized that TH didn’t seem to care because he was the HC of The University of Texas at Austin and he had a big salary regardless.

I want a coach who cares about winning, hates losing and wants to display the Texas Fight we all believe in.
