maybe Sabre.........If I remember right the district back then was Marshall, Longview, Nacogdoches, Lufkin, Tyler Lee, JT and Texarkana..........could be Pittsburgh also...........wished I could find a 1973 schedule.

Pittsburg was too small. I thought Longview Pine Tree was a level down. I don't remember Palestine having a big "P" on their helmet. Could have been Plano, but again I don't remember their helmets looking like that.

Sabre I found a playoff bracket from 1973 and JT played Plano in the 1st round so my money is on Plano.

Lufkin’s mascot is the Panthers but never remember them having a “P” on their helmets.

My dad said he took me to see Lufkin play John Tyler in 1973. At 5 years old, I don’t remember the game specifically, but the reason I went to UT was Earl Campbell.

I'm familiar with Plano and their uniforms. Their colors were maroon & white. At home they wore maroon jerseys & pants with white helmets with no decals or stripes. Road uniform was white jersey, maroon pants, white helmets. For a number of years starting in the late 70's I attended a number of their home games.

Anyway, I believe they had white helmets with no "P" on the side as far back as the 60's. Unless they sandwiched a special maroon colored helmet with a "P" on the side for that season or that game vs. John Tyler, I think that has to be another team and not Plano.

I looked at their 1972 and 1971 schedules and they played no team starting with a P or that had a "P" mascot so it must be Plano from 1973.

I had the thought it was perhaps Permian, but as you noted, they never met in the playoffs.

After getting hit by Earl, he probably took a "P" in his pants.
