2022 Recruiting - WBB

She’s a player. Looks ambidextrous. Shoots her outside shots right handed and with a low, slightly unorthodox holding/release. Inside she does favor her left hand and you are right.....that’s a big advantage. We simply need this type of player....long and athletic on the perimeter. We don’t have a similar one right now. She has a really good offer list. South Dakota is a long way from Texas. But so is Palo Alto and Eugene.

 

All she needs is much more time in the dining room and the weight room.

Well .....news Tuesday that MAY impact 2022 recruiting. The Dallas Wings have acquired the number one draft choice in the WNBA draft. So they have top two picks plus #5and #7 choices. Immediately the speculation turned to Collier and the real opportunity to play in Texas. Michael Volpeal did an interview on ESPNW today. Nothing special in it. Collier said all the right things......focused on season and after that she would sit down with Schaefer and family and decide. Would be nice to watch Collier and Sabally on the floor in Arlington. I still want to see her come back.....but better to have her on Wings than Seattle or Connecticut or New York.

 

I'm curious to know Vic's stance on the situation. I know he would love to have Collier back another year but her being able to stay in Texas and play in Dallas all while being the #1 pick is a rare opportunity. Although I would love to see her in a Texas uniform another year I think she will declare after the season. I support her in whatever she decides

 

I think the trade helps Collier make a decision. New York and Ionescu might be ok but that team is not good and very young. Plus NY for a Texas girl might be iffy. The pick was traded to Seattle who won the title last year. Seattle obviously is good but had salary issues. So they flipped the pick to Dallas for Kati Samuelson and a 2022 pick. That’s a very small price to pay for the number 1 pick. In my fair and biased opinion....which trends to more of a conspiracy theory.....I think this trade was made to ensure the WNBA gets Collier. The draft is very week after Collier and I don’t think NY or Seattle were confident she was declaring. I think Dallas will draft Collier, then trade the number 2. There are several players that could go 2-7. And Dallas can’t keep all those rookies....#1, #2, #5, #7 on the roster .....already with 11 guaranteed contracts. I think they will trade 2 or maybe 3 of those picks if Collier comes out. I wish it weren’t so....but I think this trends Collier to declare. Or not.

 

Not to nitpick, but Collier declaring for the WNBA draft after this season would have an impact on the 2021 recruiting class, not the 2022 recruiting class (unless we choose not to fill her spot immediately).

I'm sure Vic will go for a grad transfer if she does decide that way he can add more for the 2021 season and still have a scholarship to give for the 2022 class.

 

I wouldn't be "sure" about that.

Typically, there are more undergraduate transfers than grad-transfers. If someone like super-talented sophomore Rickea Jackson (Miss. State) decides she isn't happy any longer and wants to reunite with the Texas coaching staff who she is familiar with, I can't think of a single grad-transfer who would be more coveted than Rickea.

 

I only say that because I do expect there to be some players on this seasons roster who will be a better fit elsewhere and do believe they will transfer. I would say at least 3 leave and we are over one scholarship for the 2022 season so if Collier does decide to declare and Lambert moves on that would leave us with 3-4 open scholarships available. Plenty to give to transfers/graduate transfers. I will say this staff is recruiting hard for this 2022 class so I'm not sure they would want to give away all the scholarship and not have any available for the 2022 class.

 

Rickea Jackson and/or Jessika Carter.

 

Yes, Jessika Carter would fill more of the void in the paint if Collier leaves early. Rickea is more of a natural scorer from the wing, but I'm hoping Aaliyah Moore will bring similar skills (although it's not a given as a true freshman compared to a junior).

 

I literally posted 2 weeks ago that Charlie would go pro, Celeste could possibly transfer and Audrey would possibly medically retire. You said none of those things would happen and some super fan said I was lacking common sense. Yet here we are, you thinking Charlie will leave and we will have 3 players leave the program after this year. SMDH....and for what it’s worth I’ll tell you I’m probably wrong on the Audrey part.

 

According to the DMNews, and the WINGS organization, it is not a for sure they will use the number 1 pick...... If the player they want is not there. I think this is “code” for .....we will take Collier if she declares. If she doesn’t, they might trade the pick. I am getting the feeling that most feel Collier is a difference-maker and heads above the other potential draftees.

 

When I said three players, Celeste and Warren are not in that conversation. I meant players as in Freshman who don't see much playing time. The two things you said about Warren and Taylor I still believe are still false and nothing has changed from what I said to you two weeks ago. The only reason I said Collier could possibly declare was due to the Wings getting the 1st pick. If it were still NY Liberty I would still say Collier would stay. I'm still not fully sold on her declaring I'm just saying her chances increased due to the possibility of staying in Texas to play. Lol not trying to sound rude but I still don't agree with anything you said.

Taylor's body language and frustration had nothing to do with the coaching staff. She was upset at herself because she was not playing at the level she wants to play at. As you can tell once she got her offensive game back as well as playing better on the defensive side her entire attitude changed on the court and you saw smiles throughout the entire game. Warren will be on the roster and so will Celeste next season.

 

At the rate Mississippi state is going I do expect there to be transfers. You can see the frustration within this team and it's really showing in their game right now against Arkansas. Hopefully they see just how great Vic and his staff are considering they had a top 5 team easily to begin the season and now they are unranked. I don't wish a downfall on anyone but I sure would welcome Jessica Carter or Rickea Jackson with open arms if they decide to reunite with this staff and I'm sure the staff would do the same.

With MState losing tonight, they are 8-6 and 3-5 in SEC. Their huddles didn’t seem very well run.....or players happy. Maybe I am just looking for things. They were ranked 38 before the loss tonight.

 

I saw that at the last seconds in the 4th quarter. Down by 3 and Mississippi state has a player yelling at the coach and the coach yelling back. I'm not trying to make this into a Mississippi state thread but they are definitely not on the same page with their coaching staff and are now unranked. Hopefully Texas can benefit in some way

 

Yeah, I've been paying attention to MSU this season, as well. Obviously, the wins are not coming as easily or as frequently under McCray as they were under Vic the last few seasons.

If players do end up deciding the change in culture is not what they signed up for, Texas just might be the beneficiary if any of them decide to transfer at the conclusion of this season; while they could choose a destination other than Texas, that would mean being coached by a third different coaching staff in 3 seasons. But, choosing to transfer to Texas would mean a reunion with the coaching staff they played for previously. I know Rickea officially visited Texas under the previous coaching staff. And, Jessika Carter was recruited by the previously Texas coaching staff, but I don't recall if she took an official visit. Regardless, "familiarity" plays a huge role with transfers' decision-making.

 

In the MState huddle at one time, the assistant was drawing up the play and interacting with the players. McCray was watching. I don’t think McCray has a LOT of head coaching experience. Of course, it is not uncommon to see an assistant ever so often doing that for some teams. It just looked a little odd to me.

 

DeSoto junior guards Ja’Mia Harris and Michaela Gatewood committed to Texas Tech. Gatewood has been out for the season with ACL and has been committed for awhile. Harris is averaging 15 points a game.

 

I would be surprised if she left Arizona or the Southern California area but there’s a chance...Elena and Johnnie both follow her on Twitter.

 

I remember her listing or liking west coast schools like Stanford and Oregon; but, each has several bigs already, and Stanford even has Betts for 2022. So, hope we make her final six. Adia Barnes at Arizona is recruiting very well these days (coast to coast), but maybe she is in hot pursuit of this in-state product. UCLA seems to be in contention for everyone; their two Aussies who signed for 2020 were unable to come to the country, so I could see her having a spot in Westwood.

 

DeSoto won their game by 51. Duncanville won by 72. Cy Creek won by 48.

The same can be said for the Wings. They are awful, young and (pre covid) did not generate many butts in the seats.
As far as a Tx girl in NY she would kill it. It would not surprise me if she is ready to get out of Tx. I believe she is taking Communications and what a better place than NY.to get practical experience.
Add the pressure of being the Tx girl that led the Wings out of the wilderness and there you have it.
Having said that , I think she needs another year to work on her craft.
I don't believe she is projected as a true " center" but she is and will be here if she returns.

 

You make some good points regarding Wings and Collier. The Wings are trying to establish a base with Sabally and Gray and Thornton. They will not be very good again this summer........... so its take your poison.......a not very good NY or not very good Dallas. Have no idea what she is thinking. it was interesting to see that Voelpel just came out this weekend with Collier still as the No. 1. She also projects Awak Kuier, a power forward from Finland being Dallas pick at No. 2. Then Natasha Mack at No. 5 at power forward. That's three power forwards at No. 1, No. 2 and No 5. Wont happen. One or more of those will be traded. She also has Dallas taking Michaela Onyenwere, a small forward at No. 7. Also she projects Dallas takes Destiny Slocum, PG at Number 13. That's five picks with already eleven contracts taken for a 12 person roster. Too many picks, too many power forwards on an already young team. I imagine Dallas will trade 3 of those 5 picks for future picks or experience. From Dallas perspective, it will probably change dependent on Collier's decision. Again, have no idea what Collier is thinking.

 

Longhorns did not make the cut...4 of the 6 schools are PAC12 teams.

 

DuncAnville won by 30 last night. DeSoto won by 39. Duncanville plays Cedar Hill next. DeSoto plays Sachse. Anybody know how Cy Creek did?

 

Cy creek won by 38 on Saturday. They play heights today
