It's the Texans, who could possibly care? Same question I have for Cowboys fans, thought I understand fans that are over 40, who were around for the glory days and still carry the torch.

The idea of quitting isn't unique to NCAA - lots of NFL players quit in place, while still getting paid, late in the season.

What's his speech going to do - shame lazy players into playing hard? Now bust them out by name and call them quitters who are stealing their paychecks - that might work.

Or best yet, just don't watch the NFL.

I don't watch. the NFL. But believe their fans are more about ego than passion for the game. Not so sure the same isn't true in college.

The 1st game of this year He came out and stood for the so called black anthem then went back to the locker room when the National Anthem was played. Then he did not understand why the fans were upset. This is the truth JJ, I don't watch the nfl anymore because of the BS.

Duck Im over 40 (64.9, hit 65 on the 5th of Jan) and I quit carrying the torch for a myriad of reasons..............Jerrahs ineptitude at fielding a competitive team and then this protesting wokeness finished me off............I wouldn't pay you a nickle to see an NFL game in my backyard.

I have a dream, where the NFL folds and these players get real jobs.
I realize this is heresay, but a really good friend of mine worked security for the Cowboys.
He said the players were childlike in their attitudes, laziness, entitlement, ...
No interest , none. Look at the youth, 20’s maybe 30ish “kids”, my son is one.
None that I know watch the NFL, not because of the woke crew, they don’t care. The free agency, the criminal activity, the overpaid athlete...
They played HS football, so it’s not a sports issue. They watch college. All of them we get together and talk NCAA.
I see the NFL taking a hit, and I see this happening over the next 20 years.

Just more mush from the JJ wimp.

Either chew out the players who are faking it, for the whole audience to see you getting up in their lazy faces, or use the press conference to call them out by name and how they're faking it.

Otherwise he just looks sad. "Please various members of my terrible team. Play hard for the fan(s)".

    JJ Watt-
Great motor getting around the tackle for sacks. Is the designated Sacker but this leaves his gap wide open which is exploited over and over by Offenses. Not that good against run. Pad height way too high. Seemed to be only on the field 60% of plays. Would “over celebrate” any tackle or ankle sack.
Played the PR game better than the actual game.
His brother or Bosa is better.

Like Trent Dilfer said, this speech takes place every year about this time on 3-4 teams with a losing record. No, NFL players don't care about the fans, get real.
Watt should give that speech in the locker room.

His first 5 years in the league Id disagree completely with this. He had a stretch where he was unstoppable. Injuries and age have slowed him down and now he's no longer that player.

I love sports. NFL is different from college football. But it's fine. I'm an old Cowboys fan. I had the 1978 53-man roster memorized all the way down to Glenn Carano.

The Cowboys are like family to me. Not a Jerry Jones fan, but I'm not a fan of all my in-laws either. It is what it is with family. Lol

I love Longhorns Football more. There's a pecking order. But I don't hate any sports....Olympic indoor short track cycling?

    He is 31
The move clears ~$17.5M cap space
They could have gotten some draft capital back in a trade but releasing him lets him pick his next team

What is it with Houston and its NFL franchise(s)? At least the Rockets and Astros have won championships. You would think that the Astrodome and NRG were constructed on some long forgotten cemetery

All I know about JJ is the nany good things he did for Houston off the field.
Even his announcement he is leaving is classy.
I hope he ends up someplace that is good for him.
    Sure won't be the Cowboys

It's not a simple answer, if that's what you think. The original owner was a well-respected, well-loved guy who brought a team back after Bud Adams left. Bob McNair overpaid to beat out heavily favored LA for an expansion team. For this , he was given over a decade of love, admiration and thanks. And, I would argue, deservedly so.

However, close watchers of the team began to notice that Bob McNair was not obsessed with winning, like some owners are, but rather was happy having a sometimes competitive team that would be in the division race most of the season and even make the playoffs some seasons. He never seemed to care that the team was not capable of making a serious Super Bowl run. It was enough for Bob to keep the fans happy, keep the tickets and merchandize moving and the team profitable. Indeed he was correct, Forbes usually had the franchise in the top 10 of most valuable franchises. And this did matter to Bob McNair.

Eventually, however, this "satisfaction with mediocrity" began to wear thin. As mentioned, it took quite awhile for this to set in with the masses since he had built up such an enormous cache of goodwill. But about the time public perception began to turn on McNair, he got sick with cancer and instantly became a figure deserving public sympathy over scorn. Things did get a bit wobbly when one or two players publicly criticized Bob McNair. The truth is, these were contract disputes over money but their savvy agents turned some of the public against him with some racial allegations. And so Bob was finally flushed out to address these agent-created controversies, and there he was bald and frail from all the chemo, making apologies for things he probably had no memory of, if they were ever true to begin with.

During this period when McNair the senior was fighting cancer, many changes were made inside the organization as head coach Bill O'Brien solidified his position. He won a battle with the old GM who had been there longer, and then filled the staff in his own image. Some put the moves under the collective umbrella term -- "Patriots South." Ironically enough, one of the guys O'Brien brought in eventually helped O'Brien get fired. He is a Rasputin-like, man of faith named Jack Easterby who was a sort of corporate messaging coach with no football experience at any level. But he saw a weak situation with ownership and ensconced himself inside the walls of the part of the McNair family that owns and runs the team now.

Technically, the current owner of the team is the widow Janice. But son Cal is in charge of the day-to-day operations. Cal has admitted to having some type of social anxiety affliction. He hates talking to the media, hates being in public. hates talking to fans, hates talking to most people generally and rarely gives interviews or appears in public.

Bob McNair has another son named Cary who, ironically enough, is a very capable fellow. The family itself still owns several large ongoing operations, both corporate and charitable that are larger and more complex than the NFL team. Knowing the end was near for him, Bob McNair put his son Cary in charge of all of that -- over all the complicated businesses and the family foundation. The only thing he trusted Cal with was the idiot-proof NFL team -- the one business no one can screw up.

And so here we are. The Houston NFL team, which started off with an amazing amount of built-in goodwill, is now nominally in control of a guy who is afraid of his own shadow and afraid to leave his house (covid or no covid). And the guy actually making the decisions for the team is this Jack Easterby character who is some type of wannabe combo of Tony Robbins & Joel Osteen. It is a complete and total disaster.

Great summary JF, and although I have no dog in the fight since I'm not a Houston or even an NFL fan, it does make me sad to see how things have deteriorated. I haven't had an NFL team since the Oilers left town, and I was only a fan there because of Earl, but it did seem like (at least early on) the potential was there for the Texans and from afar I was rooting for them to succeed because of what I knew of Bob McNair vs. Bud Adams. Plus, it was fun knowing they came about in place of another failure in LA. Unfortunately it does not appear anything will change unless Mrs. McNair or Cary try to step in and save it.
