Against the top tier Big 12 teams.

we are top tier in talent but not in the standings. The difference, coaching.

this is Smarts record at Texas:

    Shaka Smart - Wikipedia

if 1 3rd place finish in 6 years is enough for you, Smart is your man. I expect better.

If NIT championships don’t satiate the fan base, then I don’t know what to say.

Winning early and going on a tailspin dive now is a recipe for Shaka losing his job. He is such a nice person and probably has built as talented a team as texas can have. But when you give the games away, there is not reason to keep him as coach.

0-5 vs ranked teams at home this season, I believe.

Doing that exact same thing like 3 times in 4 years was what lost Barnes his job too.

So being 7-5 and in 5th place this year means he's over achieving. I'm befuddled that with this talent and those results he is in the national coach of the year conversation. Maybe he is a quota filler?

The team started well. Really well. Then B12 top half teams hit the schedule and things have gotten rocky.

So now the Horns need to beat ttu, & ou to split with them. And then beat ku for good measure. We need to have a good showing in the B12 tourney. And of course beat up on ksu, isu and tcu in the meantime. All this to get a decent seed in March.

In his last six seasons in Big XII play, Rick Barnes was 57-47 in Big XII play. Rick Barnes is 59-45 in the SEC and won the conference once. We've really given Shaka a lot of time.

Haven't seen anything set so far. I hope the games against stronger teams have a weaker team scheduled in between them. Playing any combo of BU, ttu, wvu, ku, and osu back to back would be tough. But so it goes in this conference.

For me, Shaka is the perfect basketball coach for UT. He recruits incredibly well, gets good kids (to my knowledge we have not had any trouble with any of his players, but I could be wrong on this point), team plays an entertaining style of play, his kids (I think unlike nearly every other sports team at UT) have stood and stayed for the EOT so they respect the university, and I really doubt that he will ever embarrass the University. I will say that he has improved immensely as a coach and he is now ready to take the team to a higher level. I sincerely hope he makes all the naysayers eat crow by having a deep run in this years tournament.

    the NIT?

If the standards you have set for hoops were also the standards for football, Charlie Strong would still be our coach.

I'm sorry but throwing games away and overall sloppy play is not exciting to me.

Completely different standards. I look to the basketball team to support the mission of the football team and to entertain me with great athletes doing things 99% of us could never dream of doing. Completely unfair to compare him to Charlie Strong in win/loss column. Team is going to tourney and if they get hot, they have a chance to go very deep in tourney.

I have seen nothing on the court that leads me to your conclusion:
“...he is now ready to take the team to a higher level.”
If we win the 2nd game against ku,ttu, ou, tcu and take care of business against isu then maybe so.
But really , they just have to show up and do it.
    Walk the walk.

The Big 10 is running neck-and-neck with the Big 12 as the top basketball conference this year. Currently 4 top 10 teams.

    #3 Michigan
    #4 Ohio State
    #5 Illinois
    #9 Iowa
    #23 Wisconsin

I just keep coming back to the fact that 5 of our 6 losses were in the final minute. 4 losses by 1 possession, and the 5th was the 2OT Loss to osu where we didnt score a fg in the final 12 mins of game play. 2 pts in the 2nd ot.

So no matter how y'all put it, we've been in every one of those games(shouldve won 3 or 4 of those losses really) yes to lose close games is frustrating, but at least we're not playing in games where we've lost with 10 mins left because we're down 20. We won close games to start the year, and now the law of avgs has caught up. Ebbs and flows of bball.

Here's to hoping we get a little of the luckier ending of games at the end of the year. It can really go either way. I could see us losing a 5/12 game in the final 30 secs and i can see us making a final 4 push.

Not finishing games is the issue. Defense falls apart; 3's don't fall; and the new twist - teammates having to be separated on the bench. Judging by Smart's late-game actions on the bench, he sees it, but he has not found the magic elixir to stop it.

Beat North Carolina, Indiana, Kansas (2x) this season. Seems like you have some sort of axe to grind with Coach Smart that I don't understand. If our football team ever has a season where we beat Alabama, Notre Dame, and OU (2x), I will be doing a gymnastics routine in the street and I can't even jump. Team has won and lost some close games but this is an awesome season up to this point by a GREAT group of kids any way you slice it. I often hear the complaint that UT loses if they can't hit 3s. This is modern basketball, nearly everyone loses if they don't hit 3s even teams with King James on them. So I am growing very tired of this nonsense 3 point argument and constant negativity towards a man and a team that represents this university incredibly well. I will be very disappointed if there is not always a place at UT for a man who has the class and dignity of Coach Smart.

I can't speak for the others, but show me where UNC and IN are in the top 25. KU is at 17 and are down a bit this year. In addition it was KU looking like a Shaka Smart coached by blowing it in the last 2 min this time. Missed easy slam dunk, HTF do you miss that, and missed easy layup dropping the ball. Idiotic mistakes cost Texas the Tech, OSU, WV and OU games, not because the other team had more talent.

I was a big Shaka Smart fan at first. I still think he's a good guy with class and dignity. Charlie Strong was a good guy with class and dignity. But I don't see a good X's and O's BB coach, or a developer of talent.

I would imagine there's season where Bama, OU and ND were all down and it really wouldn't mean much if Texas beat them all if I went back and looked. They all have had their down seasons.

As RP stated above, the teams you mentioned are all down this year. I have no axe to grind with SS. I was very excited when he was hired. Thought it was a great hire.
    1. In the years he's been here, how many NCAA tourney games has he won? Zero
    2. How many conference championships has he won ? Zero.
    3. How many Conference tourney Championships has he won? Zero.
    4. Does he have a winning B12 record? No. What is his B12 conference record?
    47-55.
    5. Is he a good recruiter? Yes.
    6. Does he get the best from the talent he puts on the floor? No.
    7. Do his teams play with heart? Yes.
    8. Do his teams play with discipline? No.
    9. Is he a good guy? Yes, a very good guy.

I think too many Questions asked here are answered with a No.
After watching 95% of the games he's coached here, I am sorely disappointed.
If you are happy with the team's performance over the Shaka years, fine. I'm not.

I would put Shaka's coaching expertise smack dab in the mid level of B12 coaches. Below coaches at ttu, BU, ou, KU, and wvu. His coaching of BB x's and o's is mid level in the B12. He's there with tcu's, Ksu's, isu's, and osu.

That is how I see it.

I was just referring to the teams ability to win this year. Note, i didnt mention shaka in my post earlier. That might be a diff topic. In just pure ability to compete this year, this team has been in, and had a chance to win every single game(even baylor game) it's close.... the bonehead mistakes seem to happen more in the final 5 mins than the first 20/25 mins, which is really frustrating.

The game that pisses me off the most is the one that shouldnt(OU) because we hadn't practiced in 2 weeks and had 2 starters(and cunningham) out. We lose by 1. go figure.

Most teams that are well coached drive to the hoop when 3's are not falling, especially if the opponent's 3 3 best players have 4 fouls---see 'Horns VS OSU 2nd game. We just kept jacking 3's.

I would suggest that OSU blocking 9 shots on the night would suggest that Texas was driving to the basket and it was not working as nothing worked that night. I admit I was completely frustrated by the OSU game, but I will never judge a basketball team by its worst game of the season.
