Can we as a fan base show a little class and debate the success/failure of this group of kids and coaches once the season has ended? We are Longhorns so this is why we went to school in Texas and not in College Station.

Are you serious? If we criticize the coach we are aggy? We can only compliment. Do you realize how silly that sounds?

Shaka is a terrible coach and needs to go. I've said it here I don't know how many times that this is the most experienced and athletic team we've had in Austin in a looooooong time. Their mediocre play looks just like teams of the past and that is poor coaching. I dont blame the kids.

When this group is gone we'll be back to winning 15 or less games a year and that's not ok with me.

This is Smart's record at Texas:
Texas Longhorns (Big 12 Conference) (2015–present)
    2015–16 Texas 20–13 11–7 4th NCAA Division I Round of 64
    2016–17 Texas 11–22 4–14 10th
    2017–18 Texas 19–15 8–10 T–6th NCAA Division I Round of 64
    2018–19 Texas 21–16 8–10 6th NIT Champion
    2019–20 Texas 19–12 9–9 T-3rd Post-season cancelled due to pandemic
    2020–21 Texas 14–7 8–6

Smart has finish in the bottom half of the BIG 12 4 out of 6 years. I included this year as below 5th place, I have lost hope. That record is pathetic. His teams are undisciplined but play hard, but confused. His Sr guard dribbles between two defenders and do not seem to learn that is one of the reasons for too many turnovers. We have turned the ball over at crunch time just on simple inbound passes. Do we practice or just play pickup games during practice sessions. We look like pickup games.

How did he receive a nom for coach of the year? It must be that all other 9 BIG 12 coaches voted for him to insure future automatic wins. He is a super nice guy, but he is not a power 5 coach.

Agree. They have no interest in buying him out given the financial hit the athletic program has taken during 'rona. Basketball is just not that important to the university. However next year is the last year in his contract so I would say that's the line in the sand he has to figure out how to cross.

If Chris Beard would agree to come then cdc makes the change. Otherwise it’s SS at UT next year.

I think everyone admires your support, but this idea of yours turn message boarding upside down. How do people not discuss these things? If the players and coaches are stupid enough to read this board and cry about it, then it really shows the issues run deep.

I am a firm believer in positive energy. This team was playing really well on its way to a top 10 ranking and they were oozing with confidence. They have lost a handful of games and now any energy they get from the fanbase is mostly negative and I do think this impacts college teams (I will never argue that they read this or any other fan site, but negative energy from our fan base spreads like a wild fire). Anyway I don't see any benefit from the constant bashing of Smart and the team during the season. We have seen that CDC will make changes when required. Perhaps one positive comment could pay its way forward and who knows what might happen. NC state was 8-6 in the ACC when they won their famous National Championship. Not too different from our current conference record...

I can give you five million reasons a year for the last few years. Money NEVER earned, and most certainly not returned. Every time his team hits the court they are a monument to the phrase "being uncoached".

Shaka Smart is still here only because (1) NO ONE cares and (2) a constant reminder of the arrogance and stupidity of Billie Powers.

You seem like a nice guy, and far from a fair weather fan, but this comparison may be the most ludicrous thing I've read on this board in over twenty years, and that includes the original owners defense of Greg Davis.

When finances are right, and a quality replacement can be found to fill the Moody Center, Smart will be gone in a heartbeat.

Beijing, what’s your requesting runs directly counter to the nature of fan bases and message boards. We question performance and issues when they happen, not at the end of the season. That’s what fans do, and that’s what we should do.

To me this is a bit like blaming the messenger. We are just observing the obvious; that after building up hope virtually every year during Shaka’s tenure, his teams fail to deliver at crunch time. That inability is a basis and justification for a change IMHO. It is particularly troubling this year with the talent level and maturity he has available.

I will say this again, I am a football fanatic and I only watch basketball when the team is entertaing (BMW, TJ Ford years, and this years team. I can see a tremendous benefit to our football program and University if Smart is considered one of the most beloved coaches in America. I can also see the negative consequences if he gets fired. I will have to strongly disagree with the NC State argument. There is a reason it is considered one of the greatest upsets ever and it was considered one of the greatest upsets ever that night and not after Jimmy

I regret I can only disagree once, but I do disagree with every part of your post.

ZERO influence on the football program. Hell, 80%+ of those kids don't know who the BB coach is before they arrive of campus. In my 15 years of recruiting, I never had a football recruit talk about the basketball coach. BILLIE POWERS & HIS "LEGACY" ARE BOTH DEAD!

Jimmy V got lucky because Hakeem was not a good college player and was lost on that court. Still, NCSU won the National Championship because Hakeem was lost on the court - he was more observer than participant.

Again, any correlation between NCSU and Smart's team is far greater than a stretch.

I sincerely hope you do not try to defend Smart's uncoached team after the last five games.

"It was April 4, 1983 when The Cardiac Pack became the first 10-loss team to win nine straight tournament road games en route to a national title." NC State was a 6th seed who nobody expected to do much in the tourny: I would say that will probably compare favorably to Texas seed and opinion in this tourny. Lets hope history repeats. Why single out Olajuwon? He played the rebound and not an air ball. Who would expect an air ball in the national championship game? Why not pick on Alvin Franklin, Drexler, or the questionable coaching decisions of Guy Lewis? Better yet, UH lost as a team that possibly played their worst game of the season and paid a heavy price for it.

    Back to NC State...

    - team was highly ranked and playing well until one of their top players (and senior leader) broke a bone in foot.
    - when he returned at end of regular season, team returned to playing like they belonged in the top 10
    - you failed to note the ACC had UVA (with Sampson) and UNC (with Jordan), both top 5 teams.
    - yes the UH game was an upset but NC State had played UNC 3 times and UVA 4 times that year. NCSU beat both UNC and UVA in the ACC tourney and beat UVA in the Elite 8.
    - thus NCSU had by far the toughest schedule in the country. NCSU beat top 5 UNLV in 2nd round.

Because he stood there and watched the ball rather than going after it. He was a spectator, not a player; because he was the only one close to the ball.

Again, this has nothing to do with the fact that Shaka Smart has NEVER put a well coached team on the court as Longhorn HC. He got the job not because of his record, his ability, or his reputation, but only to because Billie Powers wanted to create a legacy for himself. Well, Bill, as I told you face to face, you created a legacy of FAILURE that will take The University twenty years to overcome.

Smart is not even an average coach. Not even for $500,000 a year. He won't sniff the final four if he coaches another 25 years. He is a waste of space and certainly should be backing up to the pay window. If he wins the Big XII Tournament, it will not change my mind about who he is, what he is, and how he got the job and fat paycheck.

I assure you that Mary Moody Northern would be standing on Chris desk if she was still alive.

NCSU had a very underrated 6-11 center with long arms who was a defensive specialist (Cozell McQueen) and 6-8 forward who was very smooth inside and out that played 10+ years in the NBA (Thurl Bailey). The senior guards had been playing together since 9th grade at DeMatha HS in Maryland who weren’t going to get frazzled. I don’t think UH matched up well against a team like that.

    Please...
Have you not watched the games lately?

They are up and down streaky because they are very talented. But, It takes more than exceptional talent to win consistently in the B12.

With their talent the Horns can beat most any team on a given night. So, Do you ever wonder how a team (ttu) can sweep them even though ttu has not one player on their team who would make the Texas starting lineup?

It's not inexperience. Horns have a Senior point guard; senior center; junior shooting guard, and depth coming off the bench.

Ever wonder why they lead the B12 in players making technical fouls; Sorely lack discipline and seem lost and unfocused at critical times?

Ever wonder why experienced guards consistently dribble into no man's land resulting in mind numbing turnovers?

Ever wonder why the Horns regularly foul our opponents into the bonus and double bonus early on?

Ever wonder why the really great defensive teams in this league (WVU and TTU) seldom get into foul trouble. Even our guards have to sit down because they don't know how to play tough D without fouling.

Ever wonder why our players are constantly yapping at the refs instead of adjusting to how the game is being called?

Ever wonder why our defenders leave their feet like they've never seen a ball fake, fouling three point shooters at an unacceptable rate?

You know the answer to all the questions above.

Really well coached teams do not have these problems game after game, season after season. Well coached teams play ABOVE their talent.

The Horns are simply NOT a well coached team.

I am simply saying that NOBODY and I mean NOBODY expected NC State to win that tournament and I firmly believe if it was played 100,000,000 x, they would win it once. I don't disagree that they had the toughest schedule in the tournament. I am saying that they were a 6th seed like Texas will probably be this year and many teams had superior rosters to theirs. They got hot and won the tournament and teams like theirs is the reason the NCAA tournament is popular and fun to watch. Why would I mention UVA or UNC? I did not mention Georgetown with Patrick Ewing, Saint Johns with Chris Mullin. Len Bias on Maryland, McCray brothers on Louisville, Keith Lee and Memphis, etc... I am simply saying that a 6th seed that is not the "best" team in college basketball has won a championship before and it could happen again. Will it be Texas...? I hope so. I doubt it, but like nearly everyone alive in 1983, I doubted that NC State was going to win it before the tournament. By the way, that tournament was possibly the greatest collection of centers ever in one tournament: Sampson, Olajuwan, Ewing, Wettington, Dougherty, Perkins (not bad for NC), Klein, Siekley, Tisdale. I am probably missing a couple of good ones. Shame you will never see that kind of talent in one tournament again due to one and done.

You both have an equal chance of being correct. It is up to the players - not Smart as the players have shown no evidence of listening to him. If they decide to play with an aggressive defense and controlled offense Texas could end-up in the Sweet 16. However, if they roll out as they have in Conference play they could very easily lose their first Tournament game by a big score.
