You might have noticed that only one senior player was honored on Senior Day and that player transferred to Texas this season.

To better understand what Vic, his staff and his team are dealing with this season (admirably well in my opinion) it might help to remember how we got here.

For reasons unknown to me, our entire 2017-2018 nationally ranked #2 overall class transferred or otherwise left the program. The entire class. And last year the entire coaching staff was let go. That is why we have no seniors other than our star transfer K. Lambert and almost all of our starters were recruited by a different staff.

I can’t think of another program dealing with these extraordinary circumstances. It’s almost like our program didn’t exist for the 2017-2018 season. An argument could be made that we are doing remarkably well considering...

I feel like our program is in great hands.

And this was all done (new staff, this season) during the pandemic. Yes, I think we are doing remarkably well considering all this!

When you actually think about it 16-8 is not bad considering the circumstances of a pandemic, losing a key player in Gaston, and only having freshman as depth. The way this team came out in the first couple of games goes to show that with a full summer workout with little restrictions this team will be the real deal and once players get more accustomed to his system as well as building that chemistry that they weren't able to do this season will only translate to being better on the court.

Since we've only had 3 coaches since Jody, let's look their records in their first year and how they did with the players they inherited:

    Goestenkors (22-13) 0.62
2007-08 Women's Basketball Roster - University of Texas Athletics
Main Contributors: Cortijo, Raven, Lindsey, Bailey
    Aston (12-18) 0.40
2012-13 Women's Basketball Roster - University of Texas Athletics
Main Contributors: Fussell, Enemkpali, McGee-Stafford, Davenport, Rodrigo
    Schaefer (16-8, so far) 0.67
2020-21 Women's Basketball Roster - University of Texas Athletics
Main Contributors: Collier, Allen-Taylor, Taylor, Lambert

[I went to the yearly stats and picked out the players with the most total playing time]

When you pull back and look at what Aston had her first year, you wonder why her record wasn't better.

Everything happens for a reason and in the long run I think we’ll end up better off (maybe that has already come to pass) but I would love to know what happened. How often, if ever, does a coach lose an entire recruiting class, especially one ranked so high? If I recall, we lost a few from the next class as well including the very highly ranked Prince.

I know how Prince is doing at #19 Oregon, but she never actually played at Texas due to injuries.

Chasity Patterson who was the #1 guard coming out of HS had limited minutes as a freshman averaging less than 3 pts per game for Texas. She averaged almost 12 for Kentucky last season and scored 18 in their most recent game and is averaging 16 over their last 5 games including 21 in their upset against Tennessee. Kentucky is ranked 17 this year.

Rellah Boothe is at Middle Tennessee. I don’t know much about that team or her time there but she put up 10 points when they played TCU this season.

Destiny Littleton transferred to #7 South Carolina where she is getting limited minutes.

Patterson is a prolific long-range shooter who, and last month was listed as one f the nation's top perimeter defenders by an article published by espn.com

Of those Chelsey is the one I'm most disappointed in losing. She's exactly what this team needs. Karen really screwed that one up. I don't think the player can be blamed when she's doing everything right at UK.

Just to clarify, I am not casting any wrongdoing or ill will towards any of the players are even the staff. I find the whole situation from that class very perplexing. It’s useless albeit fun to do a what if but I really do wonder what Vic could do with those same players.

By the way, Chasity is hitting 50% from the three over their last 3 games.

Just my personal 2-cents. When Karen came she looked for grinders, such as Empress Davenport and Nneka Enemkpali her first year. And then in her second year, she got Brianna Taylor. And then the team's success started gathering 4-star players such as Ariel and Brooke. But with that third year, she picked up some 4-stars that were not blue collar players that played the type of game Karen (and Vic) like to coach.

Basically, in my humble opinion, she started (very successfully) recruiting stars that may not have been good matches for her style of coaching.

As Mulkey said, "Well, I don't have 10 or 11 McDonald All Americans on my bench".

Yeah, the McDonald AAs were good, but not a great fit for the tight defense, strong rebounding, fast break that Karen liked to play.

If you go read up on what Chasity has done at Kentucky, you’ll see that she is exactly the defensive minded shooter that you describe both Karen and Vic like to coach. :confused2:

That said if Karen recruited the types of players she actually didn’t like to coach, that would explain while the whole class left and makes me feel even better about the change that occurred last year.

D'y'all recall...it was the first game of the 2018-19 season, Chasity Patterson was a sophomore and Joanne Allen-Taylor was a freshman.

When I saw Joanne, a true freshman without any experience, get off the bench to play point guard before Chasity Patterson, I was like, "uh-oh". I figured something had happened and Chasity was in Coach Aston's dog house.

Chasity eventually got into the game ONLY during trash time. And when she did, she came down and took a pull-up 3 pointer early in the shot clock. It was like she was saying..."forget this, I'm going to do whatever I want to do because I'm transferring after the game."

I think there was something there between Aston and Patterson. Yes, how awesome it would to have had her this season under Vic.

As I remember it....it’s exactly as loyallonghorn described it on the court. There was also some rumored drama between Patterson and another player. It was best she transferred. Glad she’s doing well at KY. And I’m happy with the guards we have now, and the ones coming in.
