Tennessee won the national title the year after Payton Manning left for the NFL. They were lead by Tee Martin.

Now, I'm not saying Texas is going to win anything, but it is possible to catch lightning in a bottle. We still have a lot of talent on this team and if we get a lot lucky we can win every game on our schedule even Oklahoma.

If your point is that Tee Martin was an upgrade over Peyton, but I don't think it is. I think your point is we can still win even if the quarterback is not quite as good as last year.

I believe that both Thompson and Card are fairly significant upgrades over Ehlinger. You'll see. Better passers and runners.
We all appreciate Sam's accomplishments and effort; he did the best he could. But he had limits.
Now we will have thoroughbreds running the show for many years to come!

No one thought Tennessee was going to win anything when Manning left, the thought was they missed their window. Martin wasn't better but the team had both a little luck and was better overall and that is why they won.

I'm not saying Texas will win anything next year, but just because we lost our QB doesn't guarantee we will take a step back. We need a little luck and maybe we can take a step forward as a team.

Talent has never been an issue, especially in a low talent conference like the Big 12. The issue has been development. If this new staff can develop talent we will leap most every team in the conference except Oklahoma, and we all know that we are pretty close to Oklahoma in talent so in any given year we can beat them as well.

I'll disagree about Tennessee. The preseason rankings of 1998 had them right there with UF, and as soon as they took care of the Gators in OT, they got 1st place votes from some of the pollsters. They had that nailbiter against Donovan McNabb early too, but everyone has first-game jitters. Al Wilson was seen as an All American before the season started. They had the 3-headed RB combo of Travis Henry, Jamal Lewis, and Shawn Bryson.

Where the comparison with 1997/98 Tennessee and 2020/21 Texas begins and ends with losing Sam/Peyton to our current "crop" is basically a blank slate compared to what Tennessee had in their cupboard, especially on defense. We're resorting to hype videos of Demarvion Overshown, whereas Tennessee's 1998 D had guys like Dwayne Goodrich raking in publicity from actual national publications. We're just not there yet. Even if Casey Thompson is the next Tee Martin (which I hope he isn't for the sake of QB skill), we have a ways to go before we're mentioned in the same sentence as those Fulmer teams.

I will say that the 1998 season was kind of crappy overall in terms of "great" teams. The national championship probably should have been between KSU and UCLA had both of them not **** the bed against A&M and Miami.

So you disagree but prove my point...

Are you saying that Tee Martin was a better QB than Payton Manning?

All I'm saying is just because we are replacing a 4 year starting QB doesn't mean we are going to be bad at that position. Card and Thompson both have the ability to get the job done, maybe even have more success.

That's not what you said, though. You said that Tennessee won the national championship the year after Manning left. I'm not inferring what you meant by that incorrectly.

Tennessee of 1998 had pieces in place that our 2021 team will not.

I didn't infer we would win anything, nor do I think we have the pieces to challenge teams like Bama, Georgia, or Clemson. I simply said for the position of Quarterback, it is possible to lose a longtime starter, a guy who you expected to carry you and what I consider an important piece in making a conference championship and playoff run and have more success with the guy replacing him. Thus I used Tennessee as an example.

With the news now that we just got Ben Davis from Bama as a grad transfer linebacker, we are now two pieces away from actually being a legit challenger to Oklahoma for the Conference. If we can get a transfer Corner and a transfer OT we will be there.

I'm now upping my prediction from 9-3 to 10-2 for next year.

    Wow, this is huge.

Can't say enough about how big this is.

When coach K puts his front 6 out there this is our possible starting lineup.

    DE/OLB - Demarvion Overshown
    DT - Alfred Collins
    DT - Keondre Coburn
    DE/OLB - Ovie Oghoufo
    ILB - Ray Thornton
    ILB - Ben Davis

Keep in mind we will have a second team that will include: Vernon Broughton, T'Vondre Sweat, Moro Ojomo, Juwan Mitchell, Marcus Tillman, Prince Dorbah, and David Gbenda.

Biggest question now seems to be Boundry Corner. Losing Jalen Green hurts a bunch. We still have: D'Shawn Jamison, Josh Thompson, Anthony Cook, Kitan Crawford, and Jerrin Thompson. I'd like to get a transfer in to help so we can bring Crawford along slowly.

To nitpick, you didn't say we weren't going to be bad, you said we'd be improved at the QB position.

Then you used Peyton/Tee as an example of the overall team being better without proving that Tee was an upgrade over Peyton.

Too bad about Jalen. He did hit a few bumps and would have had to work hard this year, but I liked him and saw potential still on the 40 for him. Dont forget incoming McNeese transfer Dunn anticipated to compete for starter and likely in that same spot.
Word is Crawford looking like he is going to come up fast...
I'm w you I like depth and easing people in...unless they are so good you just cannot keep them off...

Tee was not a better QB than Peyton. He was barely a good QB, but he knew how not to lose games. There were a lot of lucky things that broke Tennessee's way that year for them to end up in the Fiesta Bowl playing for the national championship that didn't go their way when Peyton was there.

Can't wait for the team to play in 2021. It feels like we got cheated out of the 2020 season.

Tennessee's National championship is the definition of you need a little luck to win it all. I think I remember a SEC title game that Arkansas had in the bag until they laid the ball on the ground and ran away. Ten pulls it out.

Yep but it wasn't the SEC championship game. They played Miss St in the SEC championship. The very first game of the year against Syracuse. I still can't figure out how they won that game. I had given up and was walking into DKR for a Texas game and then they announced the score in the stadium that Tenn won. I was shocked. Was lucky to beat Florida and really Auburn as well, but I guess they won them and a natty so it all counts.

Ohio State 2002 is about the same for me. They had 6 regular season games that could have gone the other way, but they just kept taking advantage of breaks and turnovers and big runs and what-not. Then, they're supposed to get steamrolled by Miami, and they pull that one out too with the PI call and all that jazz.

Biggest bit of luck was that the aggys beat a KSU team that was expected to roll over them in the Big 12 title game. No one saw that upset coming.

And thereby sealed their 11th National Championship!!!
(Because KState would have won it had they advanced but "we" beat them, so we are the National Champions!)

A few Longhorn "writers'" views on potential breakout players this year...

Mentions one I have on radar in Kelvontay Dixon.....also Troy, Karic, Bijan, Jamison, and Overshown.
I'd personally put Jamison in the already broke out club... with Bijan and Overshowns heads already peeking out the door.

Good to see the young lineman on watch.

Surprised no mention of Alfred Collins, is he considered a known quantity already? Dude oozes talent, not just talent but very unique talent you don't see in a guy his size.

The other guy I'm expecting big things from is Jared Wiley, but I've been saying that since he was a freshmen, so hopefully he will finally step up and play up to his ability.

I look for Tyler Johnson to make some noise and challenge for a starting spot at right guard this spring.

Surprising but we have a solid group of linemen, however none of them are what I would call NFL caliber right this moment. Hopefully Flood can work some magic with them, because the potential is there. What is not there, is depth and that is why we need about 5 or 6 recruits for the oline this cycle.

I also wouldn't mind a transfer if someone out there becomes available that can bring solid starter experience.

I don't think the OL pairings from April will match up with what we see in November. At this point, Angilau is the only one who is going to remain entrenched as the starter at his position. Kerstetter could put the team ahead of his NFL prospects, which could mean anything from C, RG, RT.

    Good catch on Collins, Sheldon.
Both I and "they" missed that. You are correct...He needs to be mentioned up there with 1b group for breakout candidates.
Also like and agree with your thinking on Johnson (from another post) and Wiley here. Need to get Wiley out there and see what he can do. Surprisingly, haven't heard or read much mention of Johnson lately. (He did play vs Buffs fwiw but very little "media" etc buzz ATM)
