I was just thinking about the SEC. In football, both professional and in college, there's been this incessant complaint that there aren't enough black coaches. But when it comes to SEC women's basketball, black women are half the coaches: LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, & Kentucky. This is just an observation, nothing controversial.
I think the only person in jeopardy from the Big 12 is Brandon at Kansas, but I imagine he will get one more year. I'm also curious to see if former UT assistants Travis Mays and Tina Thompson get another year.
I laugh Ball Is Life because both those programs cancelled the remainder of their seasons as it was going south quickly for both Travis's and Tina's programs. I think because the season was cancelled for SMU and Virginia, they'll be back next year.
The reason I bring up Travis is because the lawsuit issues. I don’t know if you keep up with Virginia basketball much but the fan base was complaining about Tina before they cancelled the season.
I think Tina rushed into a head coaching position considering she only had 3 years as a college assistant coach. I like Tina but she wasn't ready and Virginia wanted her name/profile to make a splash.
I though she'd be able to recruit well with her notoriety like Kara Kawson has, but that hasn't panned out so far.
Also, the Aggies are primed for a deep run this year. Makes me wonder if Gary would ride off into the sunset. That would cause a pretty significant ripple effect among coaches.
They need to leave our staff alone I remember at the beginning Vic said he would support Johnnie if she decided the situation was right for her and she said she would not leave unless it was a perfect situation. Not sure if Auburn is ideal but of course I would support her. Just me being selfish and knowing what this staff can bring I hope she sticks with Vic for a while
Yes... and IMO that probably would have been one of those "perfect situations" for her to become a head coach. Vic is around 60 yrs old... he's not going to coach forever. I hope she sticks around and Texas becomes the next "perfect situation" for her.
Auburn would be an awful place to start, they have not been good since Nell "retired" and even then, they were only slightly above average. It would take a big name who is investing in their programs to pry JH from us.
Several other names being mentioned repeatedly on their message board... the ones that stand out are Walz's current assistant at Louisville, Samantha Williams who was one of Walz's main assistants and recruiters until two years ago when she took the HC job at Eastern Kentucky (she also played for Auburn back when they were good), and Auburn's current men's assistant who was evidently a very successful HS girls coach in Alabama. I think Johnnie stays with us for a while.
Can’t really say I’m shocked because there has been nothing but controversy there for 2 years. I did think he might get another year because of the pending lawsuits.
I'm not surprised that Travis didn't have more success at SMU... he had minimal talent (at best) to work with. I am surprised that he let his frustrations cause him to speak to his players the way he did. I've always found him to be engaging and genuinely friendly. He's a knowledgeable coach with an otherwise good resume as an assistant. I hope he finds another place to lend his knowledge of the game, but not sure how difficult that may be for him. Best wishes, Travis! *I guess this explains Aimee's daughter choosing TCU.
The fan base was complaining about Tina before her introductory press conference got started. It hasn't gotten any better. Considering their AD has no clue what she's doing, not to mention no money to do it with, I wouldn't expect any movement in Charlottesville for a while.
OU's Coale retires after 25 seasons, 3 Final Fours Much respect! She coached her *** off this year for what she had.
Sherri did a great job in building the OU program from extinction. Let many head coaches, she couldn't maintain what she built. I would think OU pursues Arizona's Adia Barnes or Oregon's Kelly Graves; OU has been paying Sherri over $1 million for a very long time; they are more than capable of paying the next head coach $1.5 million or more. I hate that she beat us at home in the last OU/UT game she coached in Austin.
