And on the flip side of that coin I wonder behind the scenes how much we paid Marquette to buy him out so he can have an honorable departure. You notice there was ZERO fight to keep him.

sort of a, "you can't fire me I quit" sort of deal. I'm sure we had to pay Marquette some cash but I bet it was less than it could have been.

Texas won the Big 12 Tournament this year, not the Big 12 Conference Championship. This year Baylor won the Big 12 Conference Championship. However, it was the 1st we ever won the tournament.

I’ll put you down as a “no” for the Shaka Smart statue fund for the new Moody Center.

That's an interesting comment. Should the University put up a statue for not only Shaka but also for Charlie?

Choir directors typically don't make $3million per year. Bottom line, the Texas Longhorns exist to win. Shaka's record sucked despite the great talent he recruited. His liberal political idiocy hurt him as well.

Don't bet your ranch or farm or home or more than the cost of your next beer.

Now if you are using coach speak, you are safe, because I doubt it cost the Athletic Department any money. Can you say "Greg Fenves", boys & girls?

I liked Shaka and I like him more now. Good choice for all involved. Better than the Shenanigans of Strong and that bum Tom Herman.

Smart leaves Texas, named coach at Marquette

    Interesting reasoning in bold:

"We undertook an exhaustive national search, during which we discussed our opening with a significant number of highly qualified coaches," Marquette athletic director Bill School said in a statement. "Throughout the search, one individual continued to rise to the top and that was Shaka. I am beyond excited for our current and future student-athletes who will have the great fortune of being mentored by Shaka. He is a great teacher of the game, while also being a great molder of young men."

How many conference championships did Charlie win? Zero. How many winning seasons did Charlie have? Zero. No comparison.

I would rate them even, which is comparable. I would say the Abilene Christian loss is similar to the Kansas loss when comparing coaches that have reached the bottom of the barrel.

It's not the achievements; it's the breaking of new ground: 1st black coaches. Will the school want to do that in light of the decision not to ban the EOT?

    1. Compare the MBB costs at Abilene Christian vs Texas and I am sure it would make us sick.
    2. No extension would make it hard for him to recruit here.
    3. From Shaka's perspective, leaving now gives him a much better job than if he is fired or not renewed in the next two years.
    4. I think he did a terrific job this year. The team let him down in the tourney. It is not fair, but if he won a game or two, he would be here another 5 years.
    5. CDC does not fool around. Tourney is not enough for CDC. He wants a top team.
    6. Completion of arena is a bad time to bring in a new coach.

So, winning a conference tournament now equates to winning the conference? Who knew?

I don’t know if it’s still true, but back in the SWC days, the winner of the SWC tournament was the conference champion. It could be the regular season’s fifth place team but that didn’t matter.

The winner of the conference tourney gets the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. That used to be important before the tournament expanded the field. Now, the only benefit of the conference tournament is a team can get in that would otherwise be left out or to improve your seeding, which probably helped us this year.

Baylor had no incentive to win the tourney because they had already locked up a number 1 seed. The NCAA committee puts more weight on the regular season winner than the tourney winner. The same with us when we went to the final four. Believe we lost the first game that year but still had a no 1 seed.

Conference tournys only matter to bubble teams and sometimes to seeding. Its great to win one, I am happy the Horns did, but if the choice was sweet 16 or winning conference tourny, sweet 16 wins every time..........EVERY TIME.

One gets you into the tournament and a trophy, the other just gets you a trophy. In my opinion, they are both impressive achievements that a team should be proud of.

Yes, but winning the tournament is just that. Someone equated it to being regular season conference champions.

I believe Shaka is undoubtedly a very high quality character person. And I don’t think he is a particularly horrible basketball coach. I just don’t think he was ever the right fit for our program. That is based on the fact that his early successes were greatly overvalued. He ended up being serviceable in many ways but his contract was egregiously unilateral for an unproven commodity. His achievements mirrored his ability, and they just weren’t close to being good enough. Certainly not enough to warrant what he was paid.

Texas was always going to be a jumping point for him. Thankfully we can close out that chapter in our annals and move on. I thank him for his efforts here wish and him nothing but the best and hope he finds success at Marquette.

I’m ready to move on and hire a coach that can thrive in our program structure, will make this his final destination, and help get our program closer to a MNT.

I don't know why we even play the Conference tournament.
Either make it for all the marbles or do away with it.
