Yea, but you also risk injuries and fatigue before the NCAAs.
I believe we had 7 teams going to the big dance before our conference tourney.
Was one of the bottom two going to hit a hot streak and win the tourney and punch their ticket to the dance?
If I was high seed for the dance already I might just play back-ups for the conference tourney.
If it doesn't crown the conference champion then it's worthless to me.

It has always been that way, even in the SWC days. The winner of the post season tournament is who gets the Automatic Bid into the Tournament. Same is true in football. This past season for example, Iowa State won the "every game matters" regular season title. OU won the conference post season money making game and went to the New Year's Six bowl with the Big 12's Automatic Bid. I would also point out the 2008 football season, but I haven't had breakfast yet.

Going back to the SWC days, we have played in Conference Tournaments almost 50 times. We have now won 3. Three. Penders won a pair after Arkansas jumped ship, and the ***** all you want to about losing to ACU, won this year in a really great tournament game. Abe - Zilch. Wet-lick - Zilch. Penders - Two. Barnes - Zilch. Shaka - One.

We aren't exactly talking about Tobacco Road Blue Bloods here.

I haven't followed basketball much, I admit. So, a team with a losing regular season record in conference could be called conference champions for winning the tournament?

according to SA Express News, Shaka was 109-86 overall, 52-56 in Big XII, and 0-3 in the tournament. That’s the definition of mediocre in my book. He didn’t merit the millions of dollars he was being paid.

Recruiting was the only thing he was good at. He had 3 top 10 classes, but he couldn’t get any production out of them. He consistently managed to lose to teams with lesser talent, like ACU. His choosing to go to Marquette is the best thing for both parties.

Semantics or whatever aside on winning that tournament when Texas "won" a game because of the stupid virus, Smart was going nowhere at Texas. I can't believe some people are still defending him here and touting the tournament to do so.

    Iowa St. didn't win ****.
Did they place a trophy in their trophy case?
In football the winner of the Conference Championship game wins it all.
There is no Conference Champion and Conference Championship game Champion in football.
    There is one champion.
The winner of the Conference Championship Game.

CHAMPIONS! (with the Big 12 Championship Trophy) We haven't seen one of those in football in eons. Check out that Phillips 66 sign on the left. It says 2021 Big 12 Men's Basketball Champions. We'll see if our next basketball coach can make it back-to-back conference champions.

It's all academic now. Shaka has dumped us for a "basketball school" in Milwaukee. I wish the best for him, and hope the best for our new coach.

Saw some info on Smarts departure, he was “persuaded” to take the job in Milwaukee and by doing so saved us having to pay his buy out. The rumor mill has us courting Tech’s HC and Calipari’s name has popped up. I don’t believe anyone will be hired until after the tournament is over, but who knows at this point.

You really seem to enjoy it when we lose and hate it when we win. All that negativity.

    Chop,

I thought Shaka was going to dump us because all that coaching talent was headed to the NBA. He's not a top 15 coach. Those on this board touting the "he's a nice guy/class guy" bs obviously have given up on actually winning a lot of games. That's Charlie Strong talk. All that aside, the 2016 interview about Donald Trump being elected had me done with Shaka immediately.
Saying he was concerned for his family and his players, Texas men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart said the results of the presidential election felt like “a slap in the face” to him and some of the Longhorns.

Smart’s comments came after he discussed Texas’ 78-73 win on Friday at the Erwin Center. A coach with a wide array of interests didn’t hold back when asked his thoughts about Donald Trump.

“When someone who is elected who has a history of being hateful, of being racist, of being sexist, of saying certain things that are derogatory toward a certain group, it feels like a slap in the face,” Smart told the American-Statesman.

“That’s how some of those guys felt,” he added. “But you know what, we’re going to have to move forward. They’re not going to do another election. It is what it is and we have to respond the right way.”

Here's my take. As soon as he said this I knew he went against this Longhorn battle cry: "The pride and winning tradition of The University of Texas will not be entrusted to the weak or the timid". It's a dodge if you start talking about who won an election. My immediate thought was "Dude, there's all-black teams in this country that are somehow going to be 27-5 going into the big tournament in spite of Trump being president, and if you're worried about an election, then you're already making excuses for any loss, any efforts not resulting in a deep run in the tournament".

And I would say the same thing if there was a white coach who was constantly spouting NRA or All Lives Matter and the team was in the toilet. Start bringing politics (see my buddy Tom Herman) into the mix and you're not going to produce because it's obvious there's something weighing on your mind that's not about the sport you coach.

I'll say it again for all of you apologists/fans of Shaka/Charlie/etc. The goal is to win. Start talking about your off the field rules for the team/no guns/blah blah or Donald Trump or crap on the EOT, your head is not in the game and you're not long for this university.

I'm saying it was that lack of intestinal fortitude that was an indicator of lack of success in the future. You get distracted by who is POTUS or who got shot a few states over and you're not really focused on putting a lot of w's on your record.

I was not aware of that interview. Reminds me of a classmate of my daughter crying on Facebook the day after the 2016 election about what he will tell his daughter. How about don't be a titty baby?

I forgot about this so I'm even more happy he's gone. We lost a recruit today because he wanted a black coach. Ok, his choice, but how would the lame media react if a white recruit said he wanted a white coach. I think we know. If Ivey is hired then will this kid reconsider?

Yes. He said it once, then never got political again. I can live with that. He doesn't have to be in political agreement with me as long as he isn't always up in my face about it.
