Texas LB Juwan Mitchell enters NCAA transfer portal

Heading into spring football practice, the middle linebacker position was thought to be one of the strengths of the Texas Longhorns defense.

However, that could be set to change, as star middle linebacker Juwan Mitchell has officially entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal, just a single practice into spring camp.
Mitchell has flirted with the idea of leaving the program previously as well, entering his name into the portal in January of 2020, and speaking out on Twitter in June saying that he was uncomfortable representing the university.

"This isn’t about the Longhorns .. this isn’t about me," Mitchell continued in a tweet. "This is about our WORLD something that is much bigger than us"

    Those tweets were later deleted.
Mitchell would eventually return to the program and start at middle linebacker, as one of the premier pieces of the Longhorns defense.

In two seasons at Texas, Mitchell accumulated 99 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and three sacks from his middle linebacker spot, and was in the midst of forming a dynamic partnership with star will linebacker DaMarvion Overshown.

Should Mitchell indeed be on his way out of Austin for good, sophomore standout Jaylon Ford should be first in line to take his place in the middle of the defense.

I read another article that said this was likely related to grades. I know that narrative doesn't stir the hearts of the wolves ready to jump on a kid- so you all keep up the fun.

“Mitchell has been struggling academically,” Brown reported based on information from a source with knowledge of the situation. “(The source) added it's unclear if Mitchell is being forced to take time away from the team or if this is Mitchell's decision.

Two of the pieces released today both indicate could actually be a matter of grades and not the desire of either coaches nor Juwan to transfer. This is still murky and unconfirmed it appears, but we may want to tap the brakes on assuming he is just harboring ill will/hard feelings against UT. Maybe so....maybe no. Appears to have some maturing to do, no doubt....but we do not have complete facts on this matter. I wish him the best and would prefer he were wearing BurntO next season in the middle next to Dem0.

Edit: I see LHABSOB just posted one^^^^ as I was typing

You know most of us were good a school and mediocre or worse at athletics when we got to UT. There's lots of ways to be smart and sometimes gifted people don't have the word and abstraction skills to be competitive with the the largest collection of academic talent in the southwest. I don't know Juwan's situation, but I do know from going to high school graduation that life success doesn't go just to those of us good at book learning. Thanks Juwan for what you have contributed here and Godspeed in where you are going next!

Why are these guys "kids"? If it's grades, that's a bummer, should have done better. I didn't do well at UT and was, um, asked to leave. I don't expect sympathy because I was a "kid". Why do these young men need to be treated differently?

I don’t have a strong opinion about the situation (although I would prefer that he stay), but I find the “star” assessment interesting. Based on his performance thus far I’m not sure I would have classified Mitchell as a star middle linebacker, at least not yet.

Good thing Texas has brought in 3 transfers. Hopefully one of the three will pan out at MLB.

Between the transfers and the 3 freshmen we have coming in, Texas will be fine at that position. Let's not forget we still have a few guys who are already here learning the system.

At this point, it's a non-concern for me. I'm actually hoping we can spin down Owens to linebacker, he is so big and fast he would kill at that spot.

With the academic resources available to the athletes it is hard to understand a grade problem after being accepted into the school.

Yeah really. With a presumably easy major and class load, and with all the tutoring and help he's getting, either: (a) he lacks the minimal academic talent to make it in college, or (b) he just won't hit the books. Either way, if he can't clear the low minimum bar, it would be hard for him to stick around.

First off, these are not kids - kids are either baby goats, or children no more than 8-10 years ago.

UT football players are legal adults, who weight 180 pounds or more. Stop putting a pacifier in their mouth anytime it suits your need to coddle and excuse the behavior of grown men.

And if you flunk out of any college, with the huge infrastructure of designed course programs, profs who are known for easy grades for players, old tests, and tutors who do everything except take a test for you (or including that as U NC got caught doing), you are either dumb as a stump, lazy, or maybe, maybe have some extenuating circumstances like a sick mother. But most likely a combo of the first two.

As Tex used to say before I'd hang up "Goodbye, and good luck!".

I was a 'kid' when I was 18-21. I was immature, scared, insecure and dealing with major life changes. My brain and decision capacity was nowhere close to where it is now at the age of 51 with the maturity that life experience has brought me through. The 40 acres were overwhelming- I had a Psych class that had more students than my 4A high school. And I didn't have to deal with all the temptations- girls, gifts, etc that I saw being handed out to a couple of friends I had on the football team living in Jester East.

I got lucky and wasn't held accountable for every dumb choice and decision that I made back then. Fortunately, there weren't cell phone cameras and social media for me to post all my dumb immature actions and thoughts for all the world to judge.

But for me- and I don't care about your billy goat reference- I was a kid. My 51-year-old self is a lot wiser than my 21-year old self. Just saying that I know how I was at that age, so I am not going to run and grab a stone to toss.

@LHABSOB, love ya man, but while they are certainly less experienced in the ways of the world and hormones are raging, they are young men.

Eh, what the hell, it's all semantics. I know what you mean.

Barbecue at my place in the next several weeks....

I am in real estate and spent many years selling and leasing campus condos.
I worked on a daily basis helping these "kids" find a place to live or deal with them as tenants while selling their condo.
And while these "kids" were obviously smart enough to enter UT, what a bunch of freakin idiots when it comes to everyday life. I don't know how they lived to the age of 18.
They have absolutely zero common sense when it comes to the ways of the world.
They may weigh 180 pounds but very little of that weight seems to be compromised of common sense between their ears.

What does New Jersey have to do with it?

I agree with you- it's probably all semantics. And I don't doubt that we might be better off without him and others. Hell I thought it was out of position to make plays half the time and when he was in position he led with his helmet and got ejected.

    Looking forward to the BBQ!

Well we need to raise the voting age to 21 then, since there's no war, and no draft.

Either 18 year old's are full adults who can vote, enter into legal contracts, and be held accountable for their behavior, or they are still children and need to have all that take away until they are 21.

This "kids when they fail", "young adults who want to change the world for the better" when they're marching behind some pre-printed up banner or denouncing the school song, is garbage.

What you say is true for things off the field and out of class. But you are in college for 2 things if you are a student athlete: go to class and go to practice. It’s not hard to understand.

Very few kids are mature enough to handle the changes of college, being on your own, and all the stuff you list. Sometimes you have to let kids suffer consequences so they learn now instead of later in life. Without a good support system around you, specifically family, its a tough row to hoe!

All I know is today's 20/21 year olds would have a hard time hanging with yesteryear's 13/14 year olds in mast regards. We are a people whose maturity advances on a MUCH different plane than we once did.

No way should a 20+ year old be called a kid (nor should a 17-18 year old).....but most are these days, so....

Juwan probably has some growing up to do. I have a 20 year old daughter who turns 21 in 30 days. She is very immature. We have tried everything. She too, will have to get some life lessons from someone not her Mom and Dad out in the real world. I think kids nowadays have much, much, more pressure on them, and the culture is much, much, more difficult now than back in the 80's when I was 21! Schools are NOT what they were in the 80's not even close! I have to give young people some grace as well as the elderly. Remember, there was no portal and kids like Juwan could actually be held accountable by their teachers, coaches back then. Now? No way, you get doxxed on social media for that.
