They may have the same requirements, but the requirements (and waivers) are applied diffetently.

I wish nothing but the best for Texas and if CdC says Beard is the guy that is fine. However, if Beard relies on one and dones and grad transfers Texas as he did at Tceh, Texas will be reverting back to Barnes's ways of doing things - so what have we gained?

I trust the decisions CDC has made as far as head coach hiring, and the immediate results in those sports appear to support that trust:
    • Vic Schaefer
    • Mike White
    • Edrick Floreal
From what we've seen so far I think we will be able to add Sark to that list shortly. Basketball is admittedly the "Big Three" sport I follow the least so I'm not as familiar with the details, but given what Beard has done more or less everywhere he's been head coach, and the fact CDC went and got him, I feel really good about the hire and look forward to seeing where he takes the program.

    Hook'Em!

There are requirements and then there requirements. As long as Tech doesn't pull a stupid like Chuck Reedy & Baylor did with Joe Thomas, when his SAT score miraculously jumped from 580 to 1300 in a couple of months.

    Are you serious??
Beard took a down ttu to a final four in short order. Has an overall winning NCAA tournament record. Has taken far less talent, much lower ranked recruits deep into the tournament.
Shaka hadn't done anything close. Not even a winning B12 conference record.
Before we compare him to Barnes, Penders, Kaiser Bob, or Abe Lemons and say “what have we gained” perhaps we should give him 3 or 4 years.
Maybe nothing other than winning a tournament game(s) more years than not. That being said, I’m betting there’s an Elite Eight or better within four years.

All you can do is hope for the best. I dont like his style of play but CDC has not been wrong on his hires. If Beard doesnt ease up we will see him have a stroke on the sidelines.

This should work out just fine. Beard is a great coach, and he'll build on the solid platform built by Shaka. We'll be great!

    .

    WTF???^^^
Excuse me, but Beard took a ttu program that had five straight losing seasons and took it to two straight Elite eights followed by the final four where he made the championship game and lost in a very tight game (OT).

If Brown and K. Jones bolt for the NBA, Shaka will be leaving an empty pantry; And a program that has not won an NCAA tournament game since he’s been here.

The things you keep saying about Smart are factually incorrect. I’m beginning to wonder if you’re a troll.

Come on, Shaka made the cake so all Beard has to do is bake it. Granted the cake is missing about 8 key ingredients but I'm sure it will turn out fine next year. :hookem:

I'm still troubled by this whole Lubbock to Austin "pipeline" of coaches.

I can't get the David McWilliams taste out of my mouth. And he was FAMILY!

Well, David was a real nice, laid back guy who had a bit of success in Lubbock. Modest success. Chris Beard has had serious success over the course of his coaching career. Taking sand aggie to two elite eights and within an OT of a national championship in the final four is the latest example. And he and David Mc have polar opposite personalities.

There are no guarantees in the coach hiring business, but this is about as sure a thing as we could ask for in terms of a HUGE upgrade from Smart. He is intense, hard nosed, schooled in fundamentals, and knows how to get the most out of his players. He's coached and been successful at every level, including professional, and in Europe. I don't see why on earth he wouldn't be successful at the flagship university in the state. If you watch his press conference it's clear he wants to win right now. This year.
At any rate, We shall see very soon.

David's biggest problem was his assistants. He felt obligated to bring all those guys to Austin if they wanted to come. Hell yes they wanted to come because the alternative was Lamesa Middle School or maybe Hermleigh HS. Had David cast a net out to see who else might be interested, I suspect he would have lasted longer.

Great guy, great family, deserved better than he got, but if he wouldn't completely revamp that staff, there was no chance.

David was about being a good ole boy and taking care of his friends. Beard appears to be about building a program with quality assistants.

In March '92, after he had been forced out the previous December, we were at the Women's SWC Basketball Tournament. I got up to go get my Mom a Coke and David was sitting by himself about 4 rows behind us. He looked like he had lost about 20 pounds and he looked like he was 8 minutes from death. I reached out to shake hands, thank him and his family for giving their all to the University and wishing him the best of luck. He thanked me and appeared to be truly appreciative. To say that I was shaken by his appearance would be an understatement.

The next time I saw him was after the OU game, a 34-24 beatdown, where in an 18 minute span we went on a 24-0 run outgaining OU 302-42 (staggering numbers for the era). He looked like the clock had been turned back 15 years and that things had turned out the best for him.

Those final years on Fred's staff, being scuttled off to Lubbock, and then the choice of a world wide inter-galactic coaching search, had to have weighed heavily on a good man's dignity.
