If you had doubts about coach K and his defense, this video should put those doubts to rest.

Long video but worth it - really well done
I try not to get my hopes up too much but we have elite offensive and defensive coaching talent with Sark and Coach K

Agree with Driver - that was a very good video. There may be some growing pains as the new staff installs their systems, but I'm betting it will pay off.

Awesome video SC. Thanks for finding this.

I have always admired the defensive mind of TCU's Gary Patterson and secretly wished we had him at UT. Now I understand and believe we have someone on the same level in Coach K. Maybe even better !!

I am pumped and ready for 2021 now.

Looks like the key to his Defenses are the hybrid DE/LB positions, and he really prefers more of the LBs that spin down to the hybrid.

This should work well with guys like Dorbah. We may be a little heavy on the numbers of bigger DTs/DEs in our current roster with Coach K's D.

I don't think you can ever have too many DTs but our depth at those two positions is really good. My biggest concern going into next season was the DE/OLB position. With the 3 transfers, I think we have addressed those two positions well. In fact I now think they have become a position of strength on the defense.

Wouldn't mind seeing us get another CB through the portal for depth but other than that, this defense is about as good as it's going to get with the talent we have. I'd say we have enough to be a top 20 defense if we can get up to speed quickly.

I will say this again If we can limit the number of losses we get in the first 6 games, we are going to dominate the last 6 games. I give us a floor of 9-3 and an unlimited ceiling. We can find a way to make it to the Big 12 title game we will win the conference.

For us to beat oklahoma and ISU we will need to win the turnover battle but I think we will be in every game all the way to the end at least.
The sooners will always be a formidable opponent every year due to their good recruiting but that's not a news flash.

Agree, beating the gooners is going to be a major feat this season, but not impossible. For the first time since 1998 I like our coaches better than theirs.

The difference is their Oline and returning experience of guys in their system. If they beat Texas those will be the difference. However, Texas will grow from week to week and in the 2nd half of the season when we face ISU, we are going to stomp a mudhole in them. I don't care what they have coming back, they still have ISU talent and Texas still has Texas talent, the big difference will be Texas talent with real coaching.

Here’s to hoping coach K lives up to the hype. Hope springs eternal. Like his story and record of success so we’ll soon see if it translates to Texas and the Big 12. I feel like we’ve got adequate personnel to make his scheme work if he can get it installed and players aren’t having to think too much during live action.

Washington's class rankings according to 247
    2010 - 19. Texas was #2
    2011 - 24, Texas was #4
    2012 - 24, Texas was #2
    2013 - 18, Texas was #17
    2014 - 38, Texas was #17
    2015 - 26, Texas was #10
    2016 - 29, Texas was #7
    2017 - 22, Texas was #25
    2018 - 16, Texas was #3
    2019 - 16, Texas was #3

I think you get the idea. During that time frame Washington never got close to a top 10 recruiting class while Texas had 6 top 10 classes, and 5 classes ranked in the top 5.

I think once coach K has his defense in place, we are going to have a hell of a defense.

I believe that the first 6 games are going to be a struggle, but after those games Texas is going to stomp a mudhole in the rest of the schedule.

The PAC conference catches a lot of grief around here, but (like the Big 12) they're a good offensive conference. Coach K consistently posted good D rankings out there--so he's good.

I will post another tomorrow from same guy after Texas hired Pete

But for now, enjoy if you are a gym rat ...

As of now, I'm even more impressed with Cow-ski than Sark. Why? Sark did a great job, but he did have an overwhelming talent advantage at Bama. Coach K had good, but not exceptional talent to work with at Washington. USC has much more raw talent. Oregon has more. Utah, Cal, ASU, and some of the others out there typically have roughly equal talent (maybe a tad less) than your average Washington team. K put up really good numbers against that, and he did so consistently over some time.

If we can consistently tackle well, that alone will be a big improvement over most of the Herman, Strong, and even Mack regimes. (last year we mostly had decent tackling--an anomaly for the rest of the Herman era)

What amazes me most about Coach K is the number of high draft picks he has produced at Washington. I think he has produced somthing like 40 draft picks as a coach. That is Bama level numbers with Boise/Washington level talent.

At Texas it's like winning the lottery for him. He got some good recruits at Washington, but not at the numbers he is going to get at Texas. That is the big difference.

Something else to think about. Coach K is going to give Sark time to get his players in place. Texas has talent on defense, I'd say more than Washington, but Washington has produced a far superior defense.

Sark is used to coaching superior offensive players than Texas has, it's is going to take a couple years to get the talent in that Sark is used to. We are going to lean on this defense to keep us in games while we get our offense talent in place. This is huge for Sark as he needs the time.

I'm looking forward to what is coming for the Horns.

Yep. It will be most interesting to see Sark work with our QBs.

I see and read a lot of people say that if Thompson is QB Card might transfer, and if Card is the QB Thompson will transfer.

I honestly can't see either of them getting a leg up on the other this spring, we might not know our starting quarterback until the week 1 of football season.

I know I would push it back that far if I was coach Sark. At any moment either of these guys can go down.

Mack Jones got one season as a starter at Bama under Sark and almost won the Heisman and because a 1st round NFL draft pick. I could see both Thompson and Card doing the same thing. Honestly, the smart thing to do is go through the whole of next season and see how it plays out.

My gut feeling is Thompson could win the job and have a good enough season to become a NFL draft pick leaving Card a window of 2 years as a starter. Then Maalik Murphy will have a window of 2 years to start and leaving Archie Manning (fingers Crossed) a window of two years to start.

Thats a very interesting projection. I was happy for Casey in the bowl but if you watch that game without orange covered glasses, he was very lucky not to have been picked several times. He did make some very good throws but he also had almost zero experiene during the year due to lack of coaching by TH. Lets hope that both Thompson and Card are there because i think we need and use them both.

Or in a different take, you could say he fit the ball into some very tight windows.
And trusted his receiver to make the play.
    And they did.

If our defense is improved and we have a good running game, we can offered 2 INT’s per game as long as we keep the offense on wide open. Maybe Card is safer but at the expense of curtailing the offense is not a good switch in my opinion.

Recruit rankings are the work of journalists so lets not take those numbers as mathematical certainty. The NFL draft is seriously sophisticated at talent evaluation and based on what I'm reading they really like the 3 star safeties Patterson recruited better than the 4-5 star guys Herman recruited. Maybe Patterson doesn't like the same guys Ketch likes. If you are Alabama you can get the guys that your coaches and the guys awarding stars like. Coach K is going to like/recruit the guys he likes. Let's not beat him down if he gets fewer 4-5 stars than go to LSU or Bama.
