Given that the loser of the starting QB battle may enter the transfer portal, which guy does Sark choose? Card is a redshirt freshman, while Thompson is a junior. If the competition really is as close as it seems to be, I say Card is the answer -- he'll be around longer. What do you say?

Like I said on the other thread, Charles Wright better be ready to step in.

I honestly have no clue what Sark/Milwee are looking for. One would assume that it's a combination of X's and O's with leadership capabilities. I don't know the relative strengths of either, especially considering the only meaningful playing time Thompson earned was against a CU team that would have finished 9th in the Big 12 last year.

Without resorting to flipping a coin, I'd still go with Thompson first due to age and hope that Card doesn't bolt. It could be another Shane/Sam situation like 2017 and Card comes in if Thompson is hurt or falters and takes over.

IF it is a must choose one, and they are even, I'm going with Thompson for one or two years. Yes, Card is good, but with the possibility of pulling Quinn Ewers back, as well as the kid from California coming in, and the very real possibility of grabbing Arch Manning in the future, will Card ever see the field? Competition is great, but Thompson showed what he is capable of doing in the bowl game, more as a leader than as a performer. He had plenty of questionable passes that his receivers bailed him out on, but that speaks volumes to the fact that the WRs reached down and put more effort to help him than they had been doing before.

I like Thompson, no technical explanation I just like him and hope he excels. Of course I liked Shane back in the day too. But I hate to see Card leave. I think he’ll be special.

Sabre- did you just acknowledge that there is a chance with Arch? I thought you had dismissed this talk previously!

I think Arch is a compromise.

    1) Not wasting his college time with Cut at Duke

    2) Not going to Ole Miss and Lainey boy

    3) Tennessee may be the worst mess in P5

So that leaves us, Alabama, maybe Sons of Klem

As long as Cut was at Ole Miss, nobody stood a chance for Eli

Lot of thoughts about that question.

I think I'm leaning to / hoping Thompson gets the nod to start.

He is a Jr., has paid his dues as a backup, waited, didn't threaten to portal and seems to have what it takes to take the wheel of the ship and guide the O to success.

Card is a red-shirt Frosh., he has 4 years of eligibility ahead of him. I don't think his timeline to achieve, grow and make it to the NFL if he is a backup QB in his freshman year will be harmed.

UT was his dream college - he wants to be here. I know he is a competitor and probably has high expectations. If he does not get the nod to start in 2021, I don't think he bolts for the portal. He MIGHT consider the portal after 2021 season, IF he has not beaten out Thompson for starter and Thompson stays for his Sr. year.

On the previous thread I speculated that Sark may end up alternating them early in the season to give each a chance, better evaluate each one, and keep both "happy" for the time being.... especially Card.

    Just my .02

Mac Jones says hi. Sark just took a player who waited his turn on a good team and made him a first round draft pick making millions ... who ever is 2 would be wise to wait his turn ...

Exactly, Mac Jones only started one year. Thompson has more experience which is a plus. One half of good football against a weak Colorado team is nice and may give an indication of ability and growth but that won’t tell the whole story. Card loves Texas and is a competitor. I don’t see him going anywhere. If he gets beat out and has to wait to get his chance there is nothing wrong with that. Sark will develop both of them. He’s one of the best in the business at developing quarterbacks. Competition is good.

Bryce Young came in as a 5 star number 1 recruit and sat the bench at Bama. I think Sark can keep these guys happy.

Card, Card, Card! Just like going with Colt and Vince in their second year, we need to bleed him this year. Watching Thompson play is like waiting for something bad to happen. I went to the Alamo bowl. Colorado was a slow bad team.
Start Card now and get some kinks out in the first couple of games. I think Sark already knows Card will be the starter this year but may start Thompson initially and then bench him by the second game.

It’s clear after reading this thread that we can’t trust the QB decision to Sark. Has Sark ever played QB, much less in the state of Texas? I’m afraid we have a coach who is over his head. Way to go CDC!

I want Sark to choose whoever he thinks will give us the best chance to win now. No one knows what will happen next year with injuries, grades, personal issues, etc so why sacrifice now for what may be tomorrow. If you get into a cycle of that then you are never playing for now.

Of course continue developing players for tomorrow, but if Thompson is the guy I cant see any reason to play Card today because he has more upside in the future. In that case then maybe Card is the guy next year when he is ready.

I haven't seen enough of either of them to make a prediction so I'm going with coaches on this one.

Well we are paying Sark handsomely to find and develop a starting QB. But when he does, and I believe he will, I hope to see the back up QB get quality playing time especially in non conference games. Maybe both can get a sense of camaraderie and that they are leaders for this team. This will bode well for the team if the starter goes down. Just sayin

Our only hope is that Sark becomes the first UT coach to avail himself of the wealth of knowledge and experience at his disposal here.

Doesn't Sark know our history at UT?

The most uninformed fans start yelling out for the backup QB when the starter struggles...

I personally witnessed this going all the way back to when Super Bill Bradley struggled in ~ 1967~ and I heard a bunch if adult dumbass UT "fans" yell out to DKR to put in QB Andy White!

Anyone else remember QB Andy White? Maybe Sabre and a couple of you....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Andy on an academic scholarship for math. I always want to say he's from Westbury, but I always confused the background of two QBs in that class, neither of which is Benny "P for K" Pace, who was from Sweetwater and could throw a football 80-90 yards.

How could anyone who saw the Alamo Bowl be conflicted? That was no fluke. It has to be Thompson’s job until he fails on the field.

Consider this: In the span of about one quarter, Longhorn Nation went from loving Sam to wondering what could have been had Thompson seen the field more often in 2020.

I’m not saying that he is a slam dunk. But what I am saying is that it should be his job until (or if) he demonstrates an inability to succeed.

What if the two could-have-been interceptions both turned in to interceptions instead of drops by the CU defense? Would you be a bit more conflicted?

CT had some damned fine throws and ended up with an extremely impressive stat line, but let's not fool ourselves into believing that was a near-perfect performance or anything.

I'm not concerned about almost interceptions cause every QB on every level throws interceptions and almost interceptions. He managed the game well and threw some beautiful passes and besides one of those almost interceptions could have been the receiver's fault.
It was a near perfect performance but i'm not expecting perfection from his performances just game management.
But also once we get those super fast receivers that can get separation and top notch linemen we are going to have a scary, very scary offense.

Another thing I like about Thompson is his running ability ( I know Sark will be focusing on the running backs running the ball). Thompson showed great speed and wiggle, like he was a running back, on his long run in the bowl game. Just imagine when we need 3 yards for a first down and Thompson runs a naked bootleg. He'll make that first guy miss with his speedy elusiveness or he could throw it in the short flat for a first down. Defenders would have to decide to come up or cover their man. That's unstoppable. I know Sark wants his QB to stay fresh but Thompson or Card are huge run threats ( not exactly news I know). I think one of Sam's problems was that he had to be fatigued in the fourth quarter but he pushed on as best he could. This contributed to some of his errant throws and perhaps some dangerous decisions. But I'm not intending to rag on Sam. Sam is a horn legend.
I am certain we will be knocking on that playoff door consistently, maybe not this year but next, then to infinity and beyond.:lmao::trophy::beertoast:

Well.........I wasn’t conflicted when Vince had two near interceptions on the last drive in 2006.

Thompson certainly thinks he is the starter. That was an impressive interview by him.

His interview was impressive and we are darn lucky to have him thanks to his maturity. So not only is he a physically gifted athlete at the QB position but he is also mature and hungry for success as evidenced by his willingness to learn, to study, and to watch film and stay out of trouble. If I were his father I would be proud as hell. Yes we are lucky to have him. He is primed and ready for immense success to come his way. He deserves it and lets all hope he achieves this.
Of course life has a way of throwing obstacles and detours in a person's pathway but Thompson has done all the right things thus far. We are in your corner Mr. T.
