Another fine Chamberlain decision by the feckless administration. Why would they give the malcontents scholarships ?

What I hope does not happen is that the University has both bands at official events but only the Longhorn band plays The Eyes of Texas. That would be really stupid.

While the cluster this has turned into lays directly at the feet of the music department, Chris needs to tell them no way in hell that happens. If they push the issue, they can BUY tickets in the upper northeast corner, complete with appropriate donation to the Longhorn Foundation from the members or the music department or Hanna personally. The LHB should not be forced to not play so the malcontents can play, BUT this may be the first time I won't ***** about how loud the jumbotron is, if it will drowned them out.

I don't care where you attend. If you are on scholarship from any university and do not wish to represent that instituition and its traditions, return your scholarship and continue your education on your on dime.

    Scholarship?

It costs money to join the band.

Thank you, I did not know that. How about, they pay an application fee to HornFans, and a board (handpicked by LHABSOB) interviews each wannabe to weed out the herd. Then, we take the surplus funds and pay a signing bonus to the new band director of our choosing.

For the record, there is no Cal State La Jolla. I was hoping there was out of curiosity, but alas no.

LaJolla is so small that it doesn't even have a University of Phoenix. It does, however, have George's with the men's restroom upstairs at the end of the bar. That bar is narrow and packs so many women in there, that getting from the door to the restroom door will cause you to be guilty of assaulting at least 25 different women.

Is there a UC San Diego?

San Diego State is part of the state system, and had Rocky Long for a football coach for several years. That's where Christian Campbell went to college.

U of San Diego is a private Catholic school. Of course, if your world revolves between the mountains and the Pacific, you pay little attention to what's on the east side, unless of course, you work at China Lake.

I think that's limited to USC coeds that live in Manhattan Beach

It's true that some LHB members receive a little scholarship money. Most don't.

    From LHB's website:
"In 2020, the earnings of all endowments dedicated to Longhorn Band made it possible to award scholarships to 164 students. Awards ranged from $1200 to $3500..."
$1,200 barely covers the cost of being in LHB, if that. Also, there are ~400 students in Longhorn Band, so that's less than half the band.

It's a class, so you have to pay tuition, most have to provide their own instrument, provide or pay for parts of uniforms (like the shirt and shoes), get the uniform dry-cleaned regularly, pay for some travel costs, and so on.
It's not like the athletes where their meals are provided and they leave their dirty jerseys in their locker and get a fresh one tomorrow. Nor do they get free private academic tutors or personal trainers (I suppose the equivalent would be free private music lessons) or any other perks.

Most of them aren't even music majors. They're ordinary students who have decided to attend rehearsal eight hours/week, practice on their own outside of rehearsal, and spend about ten hours every Saturday in uniform - and pay to do this - simply because it's fun.

And then when they decide they'd rather join a different music group, again just for fun, people react with "Students should only have fun MY way!!"
Hundreds of students are already in music groups that aren't the Longhorn Band. Most students aren't in any music group at all. Are all of them selfish, pampered brats, or what?

I am proposing that HornFans place LHABSOB to be in charge of straightening out the band and helping find a new director.

Furthermore, we should all commend Tex n Seattle for his handling of the cheerleaders for HornFans. Let's keep him in charge of that group.

I haven't read any post saying that or implying it. If, however, they do not intend to honor the traditions of The University, then they can find another way to enjoy their extracurricular time. Perhaps Hanna can use his extra time to form a group for participation. CDC can rent them Memorial Stadium for their performances. Let's see what size paid admission they have.

Yes! The Eyes of Texas football team will be playing in Memorial Stadium in Austin.

The non Eyes of Texas football team will be playing in the Dust Bowl just South of Moore, Oklahoma.

Can't say the Aggies fit the latter, because without The Eyes, aTm has no Aggie War Hymn.

I don't the LHB site was updated with the new information released yesterday-
    see link here-
Changes expand options, access and diversity of University Bands | Butler School of Music - The University of Texas at Austin

All students in the Longhorn Band, Longhorn Pep Band, Mariachi Paredes and the newly created University Band will receive a performance scholarship of $1,000. Band section leaders will each receive a minimum of $2,500. Merit scholarships will also continue to be awarded.

The university will facilitate opportunities for University Bands to co-perform and create collaborative themed appearances with the Longhorn Band. (For example, Longhorn Band and Mariachi Paredes may perform together at a select event, such as a football game.)

In addition to the new $1,000 scholarships, the university will also offer financial support in the following areas:
    • Outreach efforts and social change opportunities across all university bands.
Expansion of the musical diversity of the bands, including musical repertoire, faculty, and band leadership.
    • “No Cost” band membership, including the elimination of participation and uniform fees. (Fees discourage membership.)
    • Developing a security plan to ensure safety of students at home and away.
    • Continual investment in the upkeep of instruments, uniforms and other essential items.
    • Funds to maintain the scholarship of any rising senior in 2021-22 who wishes to opt out of the Longhorn Band.

Ajo- I hear you but here is my take-
    • They made their point last season and couldn't even field enough members to play for the football games due to the issue.
    • The university put together a 24 member diverse committee that spent 4 months researching and released their findings in March
    • The committee findings did not support the claims of those who protested the song last fall
So now shouldn't the message be-
    • You were passionate about this and we researched it and decision was made
    • It is now time to get on board with the decision, throughout the rest of your life there will be things you are passionate about that don't go your way
    • You don't have to continue in the marching band if you don't agree with the decision
    Instead the message is-
    • We want to appease your unfounded concerns so now we are going to create an alternative band so your feelings aren't hurt
    • It doesn't matter what the University funded committee determined we are still going to make this an ongoing issue
    • Since your generation grew up getting participation trophies, let's give you another and we will create special scholarships for you to be in this special band
    • Oh, And the University will take on extra expenses for the classes, instructors, resources, etc that will be needed to take on this extra band to make you feel warm and fuzzy.
I agree with you 100% that many of the music ensembles on campus perform and don't play the EOT. So why create another group that will specifically be called out that they won't play the EOT- just tell the dissenters that the other options already exist- go join one of those groups.

As a former LHB member and someone who got this email from the Alumni Band email chain (hysterically enough, the utexas.edu system flagged this email as "malicious") ... I pumped my fist a little in jubilation after reading LHB members would be required to play the Eyes

If I am understanding this correctly then it is totally and utterly absurd. You do not reward wrongheadedness by appeasing with incentives and benefits.

The students, motivated purely by emotions and feelings and inspired by misinformation, have now been given undue and unearned influence over an entire department and been incentivized to do so further in the future.

More of the same nonsense we are seeing in much of the rest of our society at the moment. Let's see which group decides to act out next to get the treats they need to pacify their unbridled emotions.

    Brilliant
