The hiring of Collen seems untimely to the Dream who start their season in a few short days. The Dream is in dire straights with a losing season last year, the political issues wit Senator Loeffler and racial issues, and new ownership. Jumping ship to Baylor was a good move for her as who knows future employment status in Atlanta. I hope she does well.....and Smith appears she’s ready to stay and go to work.

UNLV posted an open assistant coach position 6 days ago...Nneka is the only one who doesn’t have UNLV listed on her profile.

Interesting. Nneka did start following a couple of former A&M players; and, A&M does have a couple of coaching staff openings.

So, if she's not joining the Texas staff, she could be joining the A&M staff. But, she does now have "Austin, TX" as her twitter profile location

Based on her social media it seems she also moved back down to Austin recently

I think after I saw the guard development go downward with Jamie Carey and no significant improvement with the posts when Tiffany Jackson was here, I'm not so excited about having a former player as coach because "it's nice to have them back home".

Honestly I would be happy with either hire. I slightly want Nneka more because she is a young coach who I have watched play since her days at Pflugerville high school so I want to see her get the opportunity and prove herself. I also would be pleased with Bill because he has a proven track record and can contribute to this team immediately development wise and recruiting. So if these are the two picks then it would be great hires imo

Irony. I believe Joni Taylor’s husband is an assistant on the Atlanta Dream staff

Word on the Baylor board is Messer to LSU snd Brock to stay in Waco... done deal. I'll wait to see if that last part holds true.

Agreed. I didn't ask the question as a means of denigrating one or the other because I think either of them would be a fine addition to Vic's staff.

Collen hire is an interesting, but risky one. I think there were many coaches in the top 15 programs that would have been an easy transition to keep Baylor in the top ranks. Those coaches know the next 3 years of recruits coming up and can leverage their experience. Collen starts from no high school recruiting experience so she has to rely on her assistants to make it work. That was Mulkey's strength and you can bet she will make Baton Rouge much more attractive than Waco for those leads.

She was a college assistant at Florida Gulf Coast, Arkansas, Louisville, Ball State and Colorado State before moving to the WNBA in 2015 so she has some experience recruiting but it's been 6 years and the landscape has changed significantly. I'm less than impressed by their selection. At best, I would've said Collen was a middle of the pack WNBA head coach.

Your post makes the same assumption of many of the BU fans I’ve come across. Waco and BU are not attractive to an established head coach. Even more so when they’re as fiscally handcuffed as they are now. They were always going to end up with a middle of the road D1 replacement or a top tier assistant/mid major HC. Collen is in line with those expectations. They’re hoping her WNBA credentials will be shiny enough to keep them afloat. I think it will be good enough to keep the current roster intact but I think it will hurt severely in recruiting. Mulkey (hate her or love her) as a one of kind uniquely suited to recruit to a place like Waco or Baton Rouge and they were unlikely ever to find that again.

I think Baylor could have pulled someone similar to Coach Vic. By moving the stadium to the river, the university is trying to make Baylor part of the city experience, which includes the Silos. It is much more attractive than most people think.

Yea x2. There’s no way Walz was leaving their respective programs for Waco. I guess there was an outside chance at Barnes-Arico if they were interested in her but we’ve seen tons of east coast coaches fail in the south. Just too much of a disconnect with the recruiting/way of life

I was thinking Vic may not announce the last assistant coaching hire until the current recruiting dead period ends May 9th. Of course, now that I've put this out there for everyone to see, I fully expect him to announce it today. (You're welcome)

Has it been announced that Elena is leaving? I thought that would be the last opening (that we're all waiting for the announcement), don't think you can announce the new person until you announce that someone is leaving (unless I've missed something, an opening I didn't realize is there).

Is it standard for a coach to have "80,000 for personal travel"? Is that money for vacations or is the money allocated for recruiting trips and travel-related expenses that are incurred in the duties of being a head coach?

Me thinks Mulkey just told them what she wanted and they said "Okay". Now they have to find a way to meet her demands.

The more I’ve read and heard about Collens the more I like her.
She has posted on social media about her support for
marriage equality and racial justice. Unlike KM.
Not sure that will play well in Waco or at Baylor but just like Mulkey, if Collens wins they’ll look the other way.

She had no choice as her players basically demanded that from the Dream org/leadership. I will be curious as to how those opinions play out at BU when players really have no leverage to demand anything

She absolutely has/had a choice. Just as KM had a choice to be just the opposite.
    She’s not a puppet.

Fact: Sytia Messer, Kim Mulkey’s ace recruiter and assistant coach, was rumored to have interviewed for the Baylor job.

Rumor: If Messer did not get the Baylor job, it was rumored that she would join Kim Mulkey at LSU.

Opinion: There is some smoke that she will join Mike Neighbors staff at Arkansas, where she played from 1995-1999.

    :e-thinking:
