    I like prime time games.

Just glad Austin didn't get the Lubbock schedule - Fri-Sun; 3p, 3p, 3p. It is supposed to be 104 degrees Friday, and close to that Sat & Sun.

    USF

Texas Tech swept this team in a 3 game series. 16-6, 8-0, 7-4.
But USF won their regional and should not be an easy opponent, and definitely should not be taken lightly.

Pitching: Looks like a solid staff with plenty of decent relievers. The common theme with this staff is not overpowering, but good control, multiple-pitch arsenals, and smart/"crafty." They get a lot of strike outs.

    Starters:

    Jack Jasiak 2.89 ERA, 6-7, 89 SO, 21 walks
Right hander. Throws in the low 90s with some movement on his fastball. Good slider. Good control. Lots of strikeouts.

    Brad Lord, 4.90 ERA, 3-4, 60 SO, 18 walks.
Pitched for a 4-0 loss against So. Alabama in the regionals.

    Collin Sullivan, 3.69 ERA, 3-3, 88 SO, 14 walks.
Right hander. Low 90s fastball and a "sharp" curveball, resulting in many strikeouts. Starts and relieves. Prone to the occasional really bad inning.

    Relievers:

    Orion Kerkering 2.28 ERA, 5-3, 60 SO, 30 walks, 5 saves
Right hander. Big strong pitcher 6'2" 204. Fastball and sinker. Likes to "live low in the zone." Relief pitcher who can start; sometimes the closer. Got the save against Florida in the regionals. Got the deciding win over So. Alabama in the regionals as a reliever with 4.1 innings pitched.

    Dylan Burns 4.08 ERA, 5-5, 82 SO, 34 walks.

Right hander. Fastball with control + a good slider that he throws often. Loves that slider. Does a lot of middle relief. Got the win against Florida in the regionals.

    Logan Lyle 2.01 ERA, 5-1, 45 SO, 14 walks, 4 saves
Left hander. Throws in the high 80s with good control. Reliable. Crafty with change up and curve. Smart pitcher. Got the win over Miami in the regionals.

    Baron Stuart 6.82 ERA, 3-2, 34 SO, 23 walks.
Low 90s fastball with a big breaking "heavy" slider.

    Joseph Sanchez 4.94 ERA, 0-2, 1 save, 23 SO, 3 walks.
Left handed reliever. 6'1" 212. 3/4 arm motion. Not overpowering, but another guy with good control who paints the corners. Good movement. Another smart crafty pitcher. Closer in the Miami game in the regionals. Good under pressure. Pitched the Bulls out of a jam in the deciding game over So. Alabama in the regionals.

    Devin Hemenway 4.76 ERA, 0-0, 16 SO, 8 walks
Left handed reliever. A transfer from U. of Florida via Santa Fe college. Mid-to-high 80s fastball, plenty of curves/sinkers, crafty, good control.

    Caleb Pundsack 7.27 ERA, 0-0, 0 saves, 7 SO, 9 walks.
Left handed reliever. High 80s/low 90s fastball.

I think we beat these guys, but it's unlikely we'll see the scenario where they simply run out of competent pitchers. They don't seem to have an eye-popping overwhelming pitching staff, but a deep staff full of good, pretty good, and competent pitchers.

Agree with Chop. In the post-season running out of competitive pitchers is frequently the death kneel of teams (see ASU pitcher walking in 3 runs). Doesn't look like that will be the case with USF.

Texas will just need to use patience at the plate and get the hits it showed during season series against Tech, South Carolina, and TCU.

The stats above made me curious about our team batting stats. This year our batters are averaging 8.4 strikeouts per game. In 2014, Augie’s last trip to Omaha, our batters averaged 5.5 strikeouts per game. But the comparison doesn’t stop there. This year our pitchers are averaging 8.6 strikeouts per game, but in 2014 our pitchers only averaged 5.7 strikeouts per game. Why were there significantly fewer strikeouts by both our batters and pitchers 7 years ago? Has there been a rule change that favors pitchers?

That's something that's been batted around (pun fully intended) about MLB as well. My theories: (i) larger, stronger individuals on the pitchers mound, therefore more guys throwing in the mid-90s or even faster, (ii) somewhat broader (esp. higher and more outside) strike zones -- often arbitrary at the whim of the particular ump behind the plate, (iii) crafty catchers effectively "framing" some balls as strikes (the Atlanta Braves made a living off of this in their mid-90s glory days), (iv) more power hitters swinging for the fences, (v) more "hitters ballparks" which encourages (iv) above.

I don't have a problem with it. It beats the slow pitch softball-like games.

It's also interesting in that it seems to run counter to moneyball which values on-base % above all else.

A UT specific factor: Pierce has us really work the counts, get the pitch counts up on opposing pitchers, and try to draw walks. This works much of the time, but sometimes leads to the highly irritating times where we strikeout looking.

Strikeouts are a problem at MLB and College ball, and probably to some extent HS, because of batters chasing home runs via swing angles and launch angles and such, stats that were not available to make it a thing until just recently.

Similarly, it's amazing to me how fast the trend of catching flyballs with glove only (no 2-handed catches like we were all taught) has spread throughout all baseball at all levels. I don't remember the last time I saw a player catch a fly with 2 hands.

FW Horn, on paper the Horns are superior in virtually every stat category - some by a significant margin and that would translate to better odds for the Horns to take the series. Especially key stats like ERA, Runs, HR's, SB's.

However, it is baseball and USF didn't achieve the Super Regional because they are a poor team. Throw in a few untimely Horns errors or a USF starting pitcher has the best throwing day in his life... well, you know.

I don’t think any team can ever take a super regional for granted because you are playing a team that just won a regional. But the super regionals are designed to get the better team to Omaha most of the time. They come with full rest for your pitching staff, it’s a normal three game weekend series with none of this loser bracket playing up to five games in four days, double headers etc. stuff. There is no stretching your pitching staff or seeing who your number five starter is that can happen in a regional. All of those factors benefit the stronger team and give them an advantage in a super regional. Beyond the inherent advantage, Texas has three stronger starters, the better bullpen, the better line up and a great home crowd advantage. But bats can go cold and pitchers can have an off day so while I am very optimistic about the Horns chances I would end as I started by saying you can’t ever take a super regional for granted.

    Nice link. From the link:

Cole Quintinilla is now pitching up to 98 mph.

Pete Hansen modified his slider to make it look (to the batter) more like a fastball.

Pete's changeup is in the mid-to-hi 80s! (batters can't figure out what he just threw until it breaks). The author compared it to a "power sinker."

Our pitching staff is now #1 in team ERA and #3 in team WHIP

    Gordon has a 1.11 WHIP.

    We're #4 in walks drawn.
