LOUISANA - RAGIN' CAJUNS SCOUTING REPORT

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Hey it's the off season, I'm kind of bored and we are about 10 weeks away from the opener at DKR - TMS.

So, this is not a real serious in-depth HP Slugga type report - just some information gleaned from an early season magazine review about them.

RC's are in the Sun Belt Conference - finished season 10-1, 7-1 conference. Only loss was to Coastal Carolina (by 3 points) that won the conference crown. Cajuns won a close bowl game against a very good UTSA team.

Finished the season ranked #15 in AP poll (first ever appearance in AP poll). HC Billy Napier has the program on the rise - 3 year record is 28-11. He has resisted offers for other HC positions. He will have a very senior laden team when the Cajuns come to Austin.

    2020 Rankings:

    OFFENSE:
Scoring 33.6 points per game average
Rushing 213.0 yards per game average
Passing 208.5 yards per game average
Total 421.5 yards per game average

    DEFENSE:
Scoring 22.0 points per game average
Rushing 184.7 yards per game average
Passing 170.6 yards per game average
Total 355.4 yards per game average

    2021 Depth Chart:

    Offense - 10 starters return
    Defense - 10 starters return

    OFFENSE will be lead by 5 year Sr. QB Levi Lewis: 2020 stats: passing 172 - 297 - 7 INT - 2,274 yards - 19 TD's. 24-4 as a starter

2 key RB's left for the NFL - Elijah Mitchell & Trey Rojas but Cajuns have a solid back up in Chris Smith - who is also kick returner.
5 OL starters with combined 107 starts and 7,200 snaps between them

DEFENSE - a unit that held opponents to a conference best 4.92 yards per play.
DL is anchored by massive Sr. nose tackle - Tayland Humphrey (it did not provide height & weight - just said massive)

Defense has mostly Sr. and Juniors so you know they have a lot experience as a unit + several transfers that may add more strength
The article said the secondary was "one of the stingiest secondaries in the country" - Cajuns ranked # 2 in the country passing D efficiency holding 7 of 11 opponents under 200 passing yards.

My take away is this team is good, confident, well coached and will come in with a serious attitude they can get an upset win. Horns better be focused and prepared for a street fight to the very end.

    Wooster Thanks!
Earlier I looked at their schedule that they went 10-1 and - absolutely well done Cajuns and I love your coach.
Yes beat Iowa St… other than that didn’t really dominate a lot.
But they’d win 3 games in the Big 12….
Texas depth and no brakes is going to wear them out.
I expect the second half to have some kinks worked out while 99.9% of Horn fans start the fire the (HC/DC or OC) thread here after UTs third possession.

Heck if Bijan doesn’t score on his first two carries I expect the disgruntlement to begin, considering the monster hype preseason.

Fleas flicker with Bijan, play one will be a TD.
    You heard it here first.
(Kidding, but the Cajuns will start with 8 at the line of scrimmage trying to stop Bijan)

These guys are solid and very well coached. Napier belongs at an LSU, Florida, or equivalent program. Sark and crew must have us ready—it will likely be a dogfight.

Don't get me wrong with the positive comments in the report. The Horns will be THE toughest game the Ragin' Cajuns play all season. RC's will have their hands full with a dynamic and lethal Horns offense, plus the Horns defense, which I think may be a very pleasant surprise how aggressive and tough they are this season.

    4th_floor Dude, where's my laptop?

They sound better than the Maryland team that beat us in Herman's first game. This game will be a good reading on how successful our coaching replacement was. I believe Sark will pass the test that Herman flunked.

Oh no. You make a good point. Maryland loss the first time was a shock. The second Maryland loss was shock and anger.
Great point, about that. I still feel the first game, new ..well new everything is going to be a bump in the road for a few games and UTs depth is going to be the problem for those Cajuns.
    Remember when they beat A&M?
My Lafayette residing brother in law had the best comment.
“I have spoken to 80,000 people who were at that game in a stadium that holds 30,000”
The goal post made the rounds throughout Lafayette.

Two hard & fast rules about eating what a coonass cooks:

    1) It will taste good

    2) Don't dare ask what it is or what's in it because you don't want to know.

An old friend of mine and his wife are Ragin Cajun Alumns. They sent their kids to Alabama. One of their sons worked for me two summers while going there. It will be a fun game. Think I’ll get tickets to that one. I’m thinking 34-30, Texas. That’s unofficial since the prediction contest hasn’t started yet. My fear is it will take a while for the defense to catch up to the offense, on field.

before the start of every season we sound just like Aggies. Then we play UCLA or Maryland or Cal and inhale deeply a few times and get realistic.

We should be better than the RCs and should win the game. Should. Could. Would have are all sort of alike.

Will be there and singing. Loudly

Yup, think that was their former name. Now they I believe they just call themselves a more formal and important sounding "Louisiana". Meantime they are University of Louisiana at Lafayette.....

There are actually two Universities of Louisiana - one in Lafayette and the other in Monroe. No telling how much cash, gumbo, and alligator etouffee had to change hands to get Lafayette the right to be The University of Louisiana while Monroe has to add the "- Monroe" in their name.

    How is their pass rush?

I'm not overly worried about that massive big man in the middle of their DL--though it could be a big test for Majors. It's the edge guys that concern me...

Chop, plus Humphrey at NT Cajuns have:

DT - Zi'Yon Hill, Jr. - preseason pick for 1st team all Sunbelt conference.

    DE - Anthony Jones, Jr.

JACK - Chauncey Manac - Sr. Transfer from GA.

So I suspect they will get a fair amount pressure on the edges....

Why in hell are we playing a day game at 3:30p on opening weekend? It should be a night game. Thanks Fox...

I, too, would prefer a night game, but I'll take 230 over 11 AM all season lomg.

It really is stupid but I agree it’s better than 11am, albeit only slightly.
