NIL & NCAA Conversation

I have heard two diametrically opposing viewpoints on how NIL will affect the NCAA. One point was that the NCAA losing this court battle makes them less powerful and is the beginning of the end of the NCAA leading to a new type of organization that will cause the complete separation of the different tiers of brands. I've heard it described as Tier I, II & III in just what's now D1. The other argument I've heard is that it strengthens the NCAA because now they don't have to even worry about this and can keep all of the money to focus on other things since NIL has nothing to do with NCAA revenue.

I understand both sides of that conversation, but I also know it can't strengthen and weaken the NCAA at the same time. What do you think and why?

I like the way you posed this, Vol.
I am sorry I won't have more to add, but I believe it is easiest in our current climate to see how the NIL move will lead to further pressure on the NCAA due to an enhancement of the growing/pervading notion from athletes and media that players "deserve" to be paid. I disagree with this notion, personally, but believe it to be either an inevitability or at least an issue that will have a growing chorus behind it increasing pressure towards that end.

Rattler just got a deal. We need to one up them.
So we need Thompson or Card or both to get a bigger deal, after all, recruiting is on the line.
And if Rattler gets another deal. Then Thompson or Card will have to get another deal also.
    Recruiting baby.

    And so it goes
    Where it ends
    Nobody knows

Its has to be exciting for the players. They can potentially make some good money to go along with a free education. I know i would be having autograph sessions with the fans. Taking pictures, taking handoffs from kids. Bijan could make several grand in a day.$$$$$ I know I would take my boys out there, well, back in the day.
I had to work beg borrow and steal for my education and loans which I still owe.
Its a good time to be a 4 or 5 star.
If I was a good high school football player looking to earn a scholarship well I would work my butt off before I even got to college just to put myself in a position where I could earn money from the get go.:usa:

Hell, I can see the most successful NIL types in college being able to forego an NFL career, and its accompanying long and short term health risks, because they will have made enough cash while in college to not need pro money.

Granted, it won't be a lot of guys who make that kind of scratch and even fewer who invest it wisely for the long term. But just watch and let's see if we get some millionaire college players who at least get to make the choice between health and more $$$.

If this is what is going to sway recruits, then we need to get our best O-lineman a sweet deal. We are in great shape with skill positions and can get that done a little later. We need lineman.

The college game has been hard enough to watch with all the self promotion after tackles, or catches. I can’t imagine what it will be like now with people trying to promote themselves…Maybe the NCAA can strike back and and penalize harder after these celebrations. Otherwise if there is too much of this stuff, I’ll tune out..

Is that $2 million twice the athletic budget of Tennessee State?

I definitely believe that some players will become a millionaire before turning pro. I think they would continue to play however for the big contract.
I can see the players walking around the campus with a lot of bling.

Hell, Puppy Dog Madden may yet become a millionaire in spite of his incompetence.

Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry has partnered with a company to sell personalized digital collectibles known as non-fungible tokens.

Big, fat swing and a miss on the marketing for McKinstry. Of course, Notre Dame controls the Kool Aid in college football.

And I can see many with nothing. Most have an exaggerated sense of their worth due to many factors.

There is a good chance that the Master J's (whoever that is) son bullshite is a waste of money for a software firm. How could they possibly see the kid as a benefit? Maybe they should have wasted the money on Daddy.

Two aspects to this - personal brand stuff, and product endorsements.

There's a decent amount of money to be made in product endorsements / bribes to come and play. Not huge money, but 10, 20, 50 grand, maybe more for star QB' or running backs.

For the personal brand stuff - chump change. I just don't see that much interest in some college level linebacker or wide receiver to sell autographs, t-shirts with his face on it, etc. Maybe a few per team for the superstars on highly ranked team. For the rest, the inability to be in uniform, or most likely have reference to what team they are on will be a huge damper.

It'll be like advertising charades, as they won't be able to say "UT, Longhorn", wear anything with the logo on it. Similar to "watch the Big Game" of football this Sunday at our sports bar, as they can't say the words Super Bowl.

If it keeps one football player from having to hunt pigeons in a park, as every sportswriter claimed they were having to do, then I'm all for it.

Yes indeed folks, here it goes...

"Miami booster offers NIL deal worth $6,000 apiece to entire Canes roster
The offer is the first from a startup organization aimed at recruiting businesses to do deals with Hurricane athletes."

Miami booster offers NIL deal worth $6,000 apiece to entire Canes roster

Basically, in exchange for $$, the U football players will endorse his chain of MMA training gyms.

It's a gin-u-wine aggie certified product. Black Kow manure is a proud sponsor of Texas A&M sports. And gig 'em aggies!"

But no school is going to allow their players to use their school photo, wear the team shirt, use any school logo or probably even color, and certainly not any use of the name of the team or mascot.

So it would be some random dude, that 99-44/100th of the audience won't recognize, playing advertising charades and attempting to let people know they play football for a school (without use of any of the above things), whoring some product.

Star QB, RB, maybe WR yes. But various other players - I just don't see the big cash flow, for any reason except pay to play there, and not somewhere else.

But we'll see how it works out, and if there is a market for it all. What will be a difficult dynamic for coaches to manage is some players making tens of thousands of dollars, and living large, while linemen and backups make 50 to 100 bucks a month on random ads or boosters making it rain for everyone.

I can see this NIL thing becoming totally wheels off paying players. Some day seniors that are drafted in the NFL may say something like “I took a pay cut when I got drafted to play in the NFL.”

Why wouldn't they? Increases the exposure of the brand, makes other upcoming athletes more likely to notice.

Well one thing is for sure with the NIL in place the players will now be well compensated for all the hard work, blood, sweat and tears they put in. This to go with free education, dorms, meals, girls, etc.
Dang it, I went to college 32 years too early. What a great time to be a college athlete!.

I was thinking, each player will have an extra motivation or a new enthusiasm, or new energy as they are getting up a six a.m. running sprints, running stands, lifting weights, watching film etc. while each day their bank account gets fatter. A little smile (or big) has to be on their faces.
USA is a wonderful place to live.
    Oh wait.......
No, this capitalist country is repressive, racist, bigoted, white supremist, patriotic, ugly history, no opportunity, no freedoms, can't thrive, etc. We need a revolution with rioting and looting and burning things down and assaulting others to make this country a better place to live.

Traditionally the colleges have guarded their image, name, mascot, and even school colors with a jealousy similar to Gollum and the Ring of Power.

I don't believe I've seen any coach, while in an ad, wear anything school related. Do they even say what school they coach at or just Head Coach X?

Now will there be an arms race with players, where the first school who allows them to be in full football costume while extolling the virtues of some car dealership or bail bondsman, has a big advantage in being able to get top players to their school? We'll see.

It's truly the Wild West now - like the old $$$ days of the SWC, but this time legal. Like two cowboys having a gunfight, but since they have deputy badges on it's OK, similar to Doc Holiday and Johnny Ringo.

BBQ Joints and Offensive Linemen cash in.
    It only makes sense...
For the first two such group OL deals, it's the Arkansas OL and Notre Dame OL, partnered up with BBQ Joints.

Good to see the "big uglies" getting their fair share at the $$ feeding trough.

"Wright's Barbecue, based in Johnson, Arkansas, and also with a location in Bentonville, has partnered not only with the Razorbacks' offensive linemen but also some additional team members."

"A day after an Arkansas barbecue joint announced a burgeoning partnership with the offensive linemen at the University of Arkansas, Notre Dame's offensive linemen revealed on Twitter that the entire group – all 17 of them – likewise had partnered with a growing, semi-national food joint that recently opened a location 3.5 miles from Notre Dame Stadium."
