Are they enticing enough to add schools and survive? Can probably only entice schools like UH, and such. Other than Okla State (maybe Tech), they don’t have much. Thoughts……
Sounds like nobody really wants the Leftover 8 so they should poach some AAC teams to get back to 12 teams. UCF Memphis Cincinnati and I guess independent BYU Gives them TVs in Florida, Tennessee, and Ohio.
Can't see any way that TCU and Baylor allow BYU in. As a Baptist, I have been more critical of Baylor longer and louder than anyone on this board, but if they allow BYU into their conference, I am beyond firing everyone in McLennan County and on the BOR except for Joel Gregory.
Yep. Folks in Lubbock, home of are pretty liberal. (when compared to folks in Midland or Amarillo…) Great cultural fit with the PAC. But…cultural fit — schmultural fit, the PAC should take them.
Not sure any of the 8 fit in the Pac 12. Kansas maybe due to the Basketball prowess but I'd expect the B1G to give them a look. Most of those schools will be destined to fall to the level of Boise St. If you are one of those 8 schools you better find a home, pronto. Their recruiting will be a mess with both NIL and a dying conference as major inhibitors.
IMO, Iowa State has a chance of hooking up with the Big Ten - natural rivalry with Iowa, pretty compatible for travel. WVa has a chance at the Big Ten - same reason on geography, plus natural rivalry with Penn State. The Texas schools, OSU, Kansas and K-State will have problems finding a home. Their best chance for survival is probably to invite SMU and Houston to join them (essentially the old SWC minus Texas, aggy, and arky, plus the Big 8 leftovers).
I've read elsewhere that Iowa (and state legislators) are resistant to ISU in the B1G. Not sure how true that is but in all previous B1G expansions ISU has never been a consideration. WVU is ranked #241. The lowest ranked B1G school is Nebraska at #133. Given how much the B1G emphasizes academics I'd be shocked if they dropped down to looking at WVU.
The only reason I could support Third Ward joining the Big XII is because Tillman could cater Bowlesby lunch everyday and Bowelsby would have to eat that crap.
I can see no circumstance under which Baylor could or should accept BYU as a member. If they do, they will really piss off the powers that be in the church, meaning I may get my wish of all new "management and board".
If they got BYU they would pick up a few million Mormon viewers, no? and I am way behind the curve re why there is so much hostility to them from Baptists or others. Can someone enlighten me?
Yes, they would get those viewers; hence my suggestion to take BYU. I'm also not familiar with Baptist towards Mormon hate. I have a hard time believing Baylor would want out of the Big 12 over adding BYU to potentially save the Big 12. So the vote to add BYU ends up 7-1 to save BU face with church leadership?
Hard to say what will happen to the B12 if OU and UT leave. No one here saw those two teams bolting for the SEC to begin with, so we're hardly in the know. You would think the remaining teams would add a few more teams - Houston for one, for the TV market and decent football and basketball teams. BYU would be a good add as well, if people can get over the Mormon aspect. Baylor did win the basketball NC this year - don't know if that's a flash in the pan type of thing, or the start of a long term success. That plus Kansas would make a good BB conference, along with OSU and ISU. But football pays the bills for just about all other sports, and without a marque program in the B12, it's hard to think that TV rights would be very high priced.
I'm not optimistic for the Big 12s little 8. Basically this was a breakup caused by Texas and OU having a superiority complex. Who wants to date the less attractive sisters after the hotties get married off?
I hope karma does not crawl into the beds of UT and OK. We did the leftover 8 wrong. I am excited about being in the SEC so i have mixed emotions
These schools made a lot of $$ off us while we were In the conference. Everyone of these school’s players gave us the Horns down and their coaches didn’t do squat.. So f them, they were lucky they had us when they did.
Well, if they decide to stick together then they should plan to have a LOT smaller TV contact moving forward. Here is a 5 year graph showing football viewership numbers for the Irate 8 plotted against numbers for the AAC. link to image This is why Texas and OU left. We have been carrying their baggage for a couple of decades now, and it is time to stop doing that. link to article edited and re-posted to clean up technical issues...
I posted most of this on another thread by mistake: Sorry to repeat myself, but at least it's on topic. I heard that Danny Bonaduce scored some pretty nice tush when groupies came around the Partridge Family set looking for David Cassidy but were turned away. Unfortunately for our Big 12 brethren, PAC 12 and Big 10 leadership is less hormonal than the hussies seeking celebrity validation. The reason Texas and OU are leaving is that the other schools, on average, don't bring enough fans/money/viewership/prestige to the Big 12. Here is hoping some other organization or reconstituted Big 12 has a future, because the schools left behind play some entertaining football and excel in other sports. But I'd be surprised if more than 1-2 of them find a landing spot as lucrative as the Texas/OU led Big 12.
Correct. But the problem for the Irate 8 is not the brand of football they play, which, I agree, is quite entertaining. The number one problem, when viewed from the perspective of a TV network or another conference, is the relatively small amount of viewers they command. Entertainment value is fine, but football eyeballs = $$$
You would think that BU would have a fan base composed of all the Southern Baptists in the nation ... well, minus those who already have a connection with and an allegiance to UT, TAMU, Tech, OU, OSU ... all the schools in the SEC and some of those in the ACC ... hmm, so I guess all BU has to constitute its fan base are the ex-students. Plus a few t-shirt fans.
They had some, them they let Randal O'Brien take the presidency of Carson-Newman when he was voted "favorite professor by some 90+% of the students. Instead, enter Robert Sloan & the "basketball mafia". Anything else I can say would get me sued, other than I will tell you I would rather have either Powers or Fenves back than to consider Sloan, and that feeling comes from before he was appointed to that office. Lots of Baptists out there agree with me and no longer support Baylor in any capacity
Can’t remember if I posted this previously on another thread (and I’m too lazy to check) so forgive me if it is a repetitious. It if they can keep the Big XII together, at least one knowledgeable football fan I know believes that it could result in an easier path to the playoffs for the remaining members. That’s because potentially the winner of the conference, someone like OSU for example, wouldn’t have to play Texas or Oklahoma. So theoretically, they might have a better record versus teams in other conferences which could make their path easier. Of course, this discounts how the committee might factor in their level of competition. So basically, is a 12 win OSU selected before a two loss SEC team? Of course, if we expand the playoff to 12 teams, the issue would be moot.
Without OU and sometimes UTx to compete with the Big 12 is no longer a "Power" 5 conference. They are MAC/AAC level, maybe slightly ahead. They'd have to go undefeated with 2-3 major Power X conference wins. Even that wouldn't be enough to overcome 1 loss teams from the SEC and B1G.
