And so it starts. Sark can’t coach worth crap, we are Texas and we deserved better, and he hasn’t even had a chance to prove his worth. Every other coach has years to put his stamp on his team, and here we go, already critical of his decisions. We will never build a winning program, unless fans/boasters change this country club mentality. Ok, I’ll shut up. Hammer me with poop emojis

I understand your thinking, SabreHorn. Just to add my opinion to try to temper the situation a bit.
No other team has the mass of talent that Bama, Clemson, and Ohio State have stockpiled - they are at the top of the list. In retrospect, Herman recruited pretty well during his tenure at Texas - not at the Saban level, but pretty well. There is enough talent here now to become a Top Ten team. What Herman didn't do very well is develop and coach that talent. Thus, Sark starts out with a handicap - the talent on hand has not performed to the high standards we all want. Can Sark and his staff provide the right coaching to develop the players to their potential and increase the recruiting haul? We all sure hope so - but it's not likely to happen overnight. Let's see how it goes over a 2-3 year period.
Meanwhile, we certainly can expect to see progress (and we should expect it). But it's a process - realistic expectations.

Nowhere have I seen an attack or question of Sark's ability. I have posted before that I don't know wat I expected, but after having been one on one with him, I think I got better than I expected.

I do, however, believe that he thought the talent level was greater than it is. MY THOUGHT! Sark will never admit it or discuss it.

Sorry, I don’t and will probably never buy the talent argument. As I have always said, it’s all about the coaching.

How does one explain that on the AP preseason All American team, Iowa State landed three players? Five stars? No way.

Folks, Texas has sufficient talent. Let’s see what Sark can do with it.

I was (and am still) in the Casey camp, but only because I have seen him play, and play very well, at least in one meaningful bowl game. But if it is Hudson, so be it. He must be really good to beat out Casey. [IF the "sources" are correct]

Assuming Casey doesn't transfer -- and I don't see any benefit in transferring now -- I think the competition has not ended or anything. The starter (especially if it is Hudson) will know that he can get pulled if he starts stinking up the place. Withstand that background pressure and do your job. If you can do that, you deserve to keep your starter position. So let us see what Sark does. Hopefully he is smart enough to keep the QBs on edge and get the best out of the better one.

[By the way, it feels great to come back to Hornfans after a very long time. So nice to see all of you old names still here! Hope Dion is all recovered]

Hey, a red X just means I disagreed with a post. It sure isn't personal.

A red X might also mean I fat-fingered my phone and didn't notice.

One take (mine) on the existing talent:

    DL - A (interior guys are A+)
    LB - C
DB - A- (this unit could be A with some work)

OL - C+ (depth is a lingering issue here; some starters are quite good)
RB - A (would be A+ with a little grade inflation)
QB - C (lots of unknowns)
WR - C- (and that's without all the new injuries; Sark talks like this unit is an F)
    TE - B+ (and improving)

Since Sark's regime took control, I would expect that the position coaches would have improved each of the units. So the talent Sark inherited seems spotty. In some units we have good and very good talent. Other units were sub-standard when the new regime showed up. Player development is key, so we'll see what this staff has done with our lads. With this staff, I would expect our LB corps to perform at least a B level this year, and same with the OL. I still don't know what the heck is wrong with our WRs, other than injuries. Perhaps they learned bad habits (or learned nothing at all) under Mehringer.

Back to the original topic: If Hudson has beaten Casey out (at least for now), good for him. Casey has shown he has talent in the Colorado bowl game, so Hudson must be pretty good.

Oh yeah, and improved play calling will help all offensive issues. I've read in a place or two that Sark is quite good in that department.

I think we have to find out if Casey is the guy who shined in the 2nd half of the Alamo Bowl, or is he the guy we see every day in practice? James Brown looked bad in practice, too. If Casey is the Alamo Bowl guy when the lights go on, I think we have to find that out. I hope he gets some quality time in a game to see, because if he can play every week like he did in the bowl game, IDT HC can beat that.

"Former Austin Lake Travis quarterback Hudson Card finishes as the number two dual threat quarterback in the state"

Me thinks Card can scramble if needed.

I went to the Orange-White game in April. Casey showed none of the flash that he displayed in the Alamo Bowl, even though he was playing with the first team. Card seemed more accurate and has a stronger arm. I’d go with Card.

Sark is supposed to be a QB whisperer. If he can’t tell which one has more upside after watching them up close for months, I don’t know who can.

Agree clean. Only thing I thought after the scrimmage was did TC get restricted by the no touch qb rule but otherwise was rather lackluster. Card had the stronger arm but honestly he didn’t inspire me either. Come on Sark and Company, coach’em up.

Yeah if anything, Card might be the better runner of the two.

Sounds like you're saying Herman must have been a great gameday coach to finish 7-3 with this clump of unathletic hacks... :D

Card will win out sooner or sooner and be one of the best UT QBs in recent memory...I'll bet you 50 cent he is the best since Colt and goes on to play in the NFL..at least a snap or two.
    Now go tell your mother...

My mom has passed, but I called her sister and she said she doesn't have a fifty cent piece, but she will loan me two quarters to take that bet.

FWIW, She knows football having graduated from PNG during which they won State Championships in 53 & 55, losing the championship game in 54.

I agree with this assessment. It could be better than this but as of now this matches my expectations. The only exception may be line. I think the line will be adequate (B or B-). Not great but adequate

Well, seeing on video what Sark said about this today in response to multiple questions, I am now of the opinion that he just may not have picked a QB. He said the "reps have been evenly split, 50-50, half of them against 1s and half against 2s" on a specific question on how many first team reps each QB has got.

So, what the heck are all these paysites' "insider sources" seeing?

Garland played Nederland in Nederland for the championship in 56. Game was played in a driving rainstorm. Perhaps Bum Phillips finest coaching moment. Garland won 3-0, but Nederland had the ball inside Garland's 20 either 4 or 5 times, and Bum never tried the FG, which would have tied the game and he would have won on penetrations. He had a good FG kicker, and lamented to his death why he did that. Closest OA Phillips ever came to winning a championship at any level.

I may sound like a negative Nancy here, but I’m just tempering my expectations. Since there still doesn’t seem to be much separation after all this time, either they’re both really good, not that good, or rather, “meh” - at least compared to the standard that Coach Sark is use to working with. It would be great, but odds are, we probably don’t have TWO “really good” quarterbacks.
In the end it may me like an Italian chef coming to America and having to choose between Pizza Hut and Dominoes.
BTW, Utah transfer and Austin native Charlie Brewer went 15-15 and 2 tds in their spring game. FWIW, I think he would have won the qb job at UT easily.

    Cannot agree with this sentiment.

Worry about inexperience that leads to mistakes. I can understand that. But don't worry that they aren't "really good" QBs. To me, that statement implies they both have a low ceiling. If that isn't your implication then I am just reading your post wrong, and I apologize in advance.

I don’t care about “ceilings” or whether or not they are “really good,” etc. I just want to win NOW. If possible. Seems like other good teams of late have figured out that the transfer route is a good tool.
