What we don’t know and may never know is the basis for Sark choosing Card. Was there really separation? If so, was it dramatic, very subtle, or simply, does Sark believe that HC is a better fit his offense?

My uneducated take is that Sark saw very little separation but felt that HC had a higher ceiling, and that he was a better fit. I see a little Matt Jones in HC, and more or a mobile QB in CT.

My expectations are not high for this weekend, but I am prepared to be pleasantly surprised. That said, had CT been selected, my expectations would have been much higher for the performance at the position.

I think there are several reasons for choosing Card which have already been mentioned.
Card seems to take better care of the ball.
    Stronger arm and more accurate.
    These reasons speak volumes.
But i also think the reason Card was chosen was so that he could show recruits that we have s QB who can make accurate throws downfield. And we need top receivers!
We need Card to play well.
But i believe CT is capable.

Every time I read something about scrimmage or practice, Thompson threw a pick. If it were a close battle, I imagine turnovers would place high on the list as not many teams not spelled Alabama can over come them.

Cards down fall was holding on to the ball and taking a sack (from reports), I prefer this over a pick. If Thompson would throw it away instead of trying to force it, he might be the starter. I think with time card learns to throw it away as his pocket presence matures.

We damn sure can't afford a turn over against oklahoma, iowa st, tcu, arkansas and the list goes on... i'm not sure why any one would be struggling with sarks decision. Either way, I support both of them, they are both on my team and I want nothing but great success for both.

Exactly. We've got one of the most experienced, highly paid, coaching staffs in the country. Why not trust them? I'm sure they know a bit more than the Horn Fans experts. They've been watching these two for months.

Now they need to stick to their decision and give Card time to adjust. He's going to make mistakes early on and you can't pull him and put in Thompson every time he goofs. Thompson should only come in when it's garbage time. That was the one of the few good traits Herman had. He stuck with Sam through thick and thin.

Which other schools have played their backup QB regularly during the first half of close games against quality opponents just to get him experience (not counting situations where neither guy is really the backup because there's not an established full-time starter yet)?

If only Mack had given Gilbert some meaningful playing time...

I didn't say the first half of close games. But it makes absolutely no sense to keep QB1 in when it was clearly out of hand/in massive control by the middle of the 3rd quarter. Bringing QB2 in only to hand off three times or to take three knees accomplishes nothing.

Telling a kid that they did a bang-up job for the first 40 minutes of a game and to take a breather does nothing to harm confidence. It does everything to allow QB2 to get reps in game situations with the first team.

Can you imagine how 2009 might have turned out if we didn't have QB2 coming in basically looking like a deer in the headlights?

He'd have probably played worse based on his 2010-onward performances. He was too confused and excited that night to be himself. He gave us a chance to win. We blew it. There was at least one dropped TD in the end zone.

If only we wouldn't have left his blindside totally unprotected down near the end zone on that last real chance with 4 minutes left. Where the hell was the offensive LT? That 'Bama DE that sacked him, Eryk Anders, went to high school about 4 miles from my house. Now he's a UFC fighter.

Hell, if we'd have taken a knee with seconds left in the first half....... don't get me started. That still haunts my dreams, especially since it launched the 'Bama dynasty that has dominated football for the last decade.

None of us can know for sure but I don't think a couple of dozen extra passes against demoralized 2nd stringers of 2nd rate opponents would have prepared him well for Alabama.

What we really did wrong that I saw was try and just sit on the ball. It's like we got on a bullhorn and told the Alabama defense "We don't trust this guy, we're just gonna hand off and throw short passes" and wasted the entire first half.

Yep. Malcolm Williams had the unforced drop of well-thrown pass that would have been a TD, and Marquise Goodwin and DJ Monroe both caused interceptions by unforced muffs of well-throw passes that hit them in the chest/shoulder. Jordan Shipley was the only Texas player to catch a pass while more than 5 yards downfield that day.

Well, Sark just said that Hudson starts but Casey will play.
    So, there you have it.

'Cause that always works so well, see Simms/Applewhite, etc. I was hoping we were going to dodge that trap. Guess not.

Okie Lite may have been demoralized, but they were hardly second rate that year...they were #13 coming in. There is no reason GG should only have thrown two passes. Or perhaps allowed him to throw more than five passes against Bailor...the longest of which was for three yards.

There WERE conference games that they could have given him a quarter (or more) to have games that were not against complete fluff like Wyoming or ULM.

Which is pretty much telegraphed by the game program and media sheets that would have been showing full season stats going into the game. It allowed Alabama to pin their ears back and just come after him once it was clear we were down to QB2.

Would it have changed the outcome? Who knows. Maybe not. But there is ALSO a reason we have started seeing NFL teams making sure QB2 is competent. Nobody really wants to be down to QB7 (or whatever Denver had the week they pulled a WR in to start) or like Dallas with Deniro, err Dinucci...or Washington going into the playoffs with the Heineken guy.

Like I said in the other thread, Charles Wright better be up for the #2 job. That kind of dynamic was fine when we had VY/Colt and never had to rely on Matt Nordgren or Sherrod Harris. But for some reason or another, Card doesn't give off those leadership vibes that I saw from Colt in the 2006 Spring practices or fall prep.

I'm typically not the conspiracy theorist of this board, but there's something to be said for LTHS. It's local. It has QB successes at other programs, from Snowflake to VT to KU. And there's the Garrett Gilbert factor... guy still chugging along in the NFL as a backup and played pretty well at his SMU stop after Texas. Keeping in-state HS coaches happy has to be a higher priority going forward, and this is like the "grace" year in which we're not relying on Maalik Murphy and have to prove that we're making in-roads with the good old boys.

As John Madden said, "if you have two quarterbacks, you have none."

Maybe I'm overreacting. Hopefully they're not truly splitting time. Maybe Casey will be used to take advantage of his athleticism on third and short or goal line situations. We'll see.

So, I just refreshed my recollection: Hudson Card received 22 D1 offers. He turned down Alabama and Ohio State and all the others to stay in Austin for his dream school. The #2 dual threat QB in the country, so of course he got that kind of attention.

Why do I feel like on Hornfans Card’s overtaking of Thompson is treated as a downer and a surprise? The highest QB recruit we have had in a long time is panning out—this is fantastic, people!

He said HC starts this game. CT will play.
    Then reevaluate next week.
When asked if HC is his starting QB he said he is this week.
Sounds like things could be in a state of flux.

I think a lot of people were so impressed by Casey's Alamo Bowl performance that they were desperate to see it translate into the starting job and it obviously hasn't happened.

Back to the Gilbert thing real quick. We should have played Chiles at QB and run the zone read. It would have confused the hell out of Bama instead of throwing Gilbert to the wolves.

Looking forward to Card. One reason we hired Sark is because of his QB coaching. I trust him. Let’s roll up the Cajuns this week and move on.

So do I. UNLESS it’s one of those strip sacks. Garrett Gilbert is still having problems with this.

Had Colorado not dropped two potential INTs (one of which was Rod Babers-esque) those people wouldn't be so impressed. CT had a hell of a nice game but let's not act as if he was the second coming of Archie Manning.

My personal observation over the years is that very often a backup can come in and, in certain game situations and with little pressure, light it up ...but then come down to earth when they are "the man" and the focal point of the offense. Doesn't mean they can't be good...just means one game means very little. And to your point Sangre, he was a little too fast and loose for me in that game and I saw reasons to be both impressed and concerned.

I'd rather Sark announce both will get playing time than the QB on the field worried he will get yanked for a bad play.
