He did say both will get playing time.
He also said Card is the starter "this week".
Got to be able to handle the pressure if you want the job.

I'm just a fan like most of you and have no expertise to speak of, but 60 years of watching college football lead me to the conclusion that consistently winning coaches pick a QB and say; "You're my man. Now go out and win the game". They don't say; "you're starting, but I'll reevaluate you after the game".

Don't you think they reevaluate after every game whether they announce it or not?
    Football is a meritocracy.
Your backup is waiting to take your place every game if you don't take care of business.
Iron sharpens iron, as they say.
Obviously these two QBs are basically neck and neck with ability and Card barely edged out Casey.
    Sark will work it out.

Somebody had to start the game. What I've interpreted from Sark's comments is that neither was head and shoulders above the other, and Sark doesn't think evaluating based on intrasquad scrimmages is equivalent to a real game. So, yes, he's using this game to further evaluate. And I'm guessing he's hoping Card shows he's up to the challenge. If Card succeeds, the question of who the starter is is over. If he fails, Thompson has the chance to show he is the gamer. If they both fail, well, holy bummer, Batman!

Florida won a title playing 2 QBs (Leak/Tebow). If I recall correctly, Ohio State won with their 3rd string QB after the first 2 got injured.

Of course players get evaluated after every game, but you don't dump your starting QB lightly. I just think Sark fumbled the ball on his first tough decision. The coach waffling on the most important position on the team isn't good for anybody.

Casey showed he's got the stuff in our bowl game. If Hudson beat him out, then Hudson must be good!

Orangebloods listed some of the questions asked during Sark's Louisiana game press conference. Questions about the QB battle were numerous: How much playing time would Casey get? What if it's a close game, would he play Casey? Will Card start the next game, etc. He should have put the issue to bed so the team could focus on winning, but he choose not to.

He even praised Casey during the presser. I suppose he's trying to assuage Casey's feelings so he doesn't go to the portal. Can't see Bear Bryant or DKR worrying about things like that before a game. A game that will get Sark's career at UT off to either a good start or a terrible one.

So, Bear Bryant ignored the portal back in his day?
You are upset at something, but it’s hard to understand exactly what it is. We may win or lose this game, but it will have NOTHING to do with telling the second string QB to hang in there and he still has a chance to prove himself. Sark’s been here 7 months. He got 2 QBs with no starting experience. One moved slightly ahead of the other, based on practice alone. About 2 weeks ago, it seems he made a firm decision on the starter for game one, and is saying the obvious, logical thing, which is that game performance will be a factor moving forward. BTW, didn’t DKR replace his QB Bill Bradley in the second game of 1968 with James Street?

Why are you upset? Should Sark be saying that Card will be the starter for the whole year (or 4 years) and nothing will ever change his mind?

In a prior press conference Sark was asked if he worried about the losing QB hitting the portal.
    He said no.
He would make the decision that was best for the team.
He said there are 100 players on the team and not one of them is more important than the team.
Now, knowing he will most likely need his backup QB at some time during the season he would like that backup to be Casey.
He also mentioned that neither of these two have started a college game.
So, I don't know that I blame him for wanting to see how Card responds when the lights come on.

I wish he could have just flatly said Card is the guy, also, but....I think he's handled this fine. It is a tough spot. No way he was going to alienate Casey not knowing for sure what he had in HC this year and no way was he going to put himself in a position to have to pull Card in a very important game without it looking planned.
He is clearly hoping Card is the man, plays well enough they can work Casey in a little and Card keeps holding him off overall in weeks to come and earns the right to stay QB1. If not, plan B hope is Casey takes over, has a good year, and Card is still happy and hungry and ready to take over next year.

Lots of sacks are associated with fumbles.

I’m 70 year old and somewhat wise, but I would think that sacks would amount to about 15% turnovers, where interceptions account for 100%. If my math is correct.

How could he (put the issue to bed)? Again, neither has started a college game so I see zero value in his being any more definitive than he has been so far.

Perhaps you feel that Card doesn’t have his full support? That would make no sense to me. After all, as a redshirt freshman, Card had been tapped to start over a player who has been in the program for three years, and who had one of the best halves of football at that position (in the bowl game) that we have seen in more than a decade.

So far, I think that Sark is handling this decision about as adroitly as anyone could hope.

10 sacks results in about 2-3 fumbles (particularly frosh QB’s). At this level of sacks, probably better to throw INT’s down the field.

I would go with “The team that wins the turnover battle is gonna win almost every time” axiom.

I don't know why some continue to believe the #2 DUAL THREAT QB recruit in the state is somehow going to be a statue in the backfield and sacked every other play.
    I'll just repost this here.
