It’s on Netflix. Korean media bursts onto the global streaming series scene in a big way with Squid Game. Some shadowy corporation give debtors a chance to play deadly versions of Korean childhood games against a bunch of other debtors for a chance to win big $$$$$. There’s a sort of Roman Gladiator-like element to it.

Very well done. Good acting, characters, and story. Very violent. It has a dystopian and negative feel to it, but the lead actor and a few others bring some level of hope. Probably ok for youths 13+ who aren’t too sensitive. Did I mention it is very violent…?

IMHO Korea bumps up their media to a near-Japan level with this one.

Korea has had some good series picked up by Netflix for awhile. Squid Game is good albeit not as good a Alice in Borderland, IMHO.

AinB is Japanese produced. Better effects, better acting and less predictable storyline. It also follows the "death game" storyline though in this case the characters didn't choose to be there, how they got there is a mystery, but they have to keep winning group games to stay alive. It's based on a Japanese Graphic Novel (Manga?).

If you like Squid Game I'd strongly encourage you to check out Alice in Borderland.

I watched this show last week. Interesting concept, something like 300-400 contestants to start the competition, and only one was remaining at the end. Each day had a different game and the losers were killed. But, the winner got 45 billion won, but in US dollars, a won is worth only .0084 dollars (that's less than 1 penny). And yes, it was very violent. But it kept my attention, for sure. I recommend giving it a watch as well.

Thanks for the info. I'll look for it on Netflix. Hopefully it will come around soon if it isn't running currently.

UPDATE: Alice in Borderland is still on Netflix. Watching it now.

    That's still $37M USD.

It's a Netflix original so it shouldn't cycle out of their rotation.

    Spoiler Alert --

Squid Game—my 2 least favorite characters died at the same time. (the organized crime thug and the loud-mouthed annoying woman)

Assuming you were deep in debt, would you put your life on the line for $37M? I suspect $37M might go a bit further in Korea depending on where you choose to live.

They both were like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. In my mind they made it HARDER to watch the show, especially that woman.

For a contrast, take that North Korean defector girl. I thought she was one of the best characters.

Just finished watching Alice in Borderland. It was pretty brutal! I liked it better than Squid Game

The great enigma is the old man--another one of my favorite characters.

I don't know if a new season is being made, but I bet we learn a lot more about his past.
