State school employee, Nick Rolovich, was fired today as head football coach at Washington State for refusing to take a coronavirus vaccine.

    Here’s the kicker…

…he gave religious reasons for why he refused the vaccine.

I'm sure this action will ensure WSU is a safer, more prosperous place now....

He is Catholic. The Roman Catholic church has supported the vaccines. Still, it hasn't been made public whether a panel that reviews the exemptions approved or denied the exemption. The reportedly do so blind, not knowing the identity of the person applying. Getting an exemption was not a guarantee to keep your job. It had to be able to be eligible for accommodation to not require significant public interaction face-to-face. That isn't possible for an HC.

I can't find the article now, but one said around 3% of WA state employees were approved for religious exception. What religion is it that says no to vaccines that WA believes?

Church of Christ, Scientist, is the one that people always cite. They turn down cancer treatments and blood transfusions, but they're also only 0.1% of Christians in the US.

My guess is that the vast majority of approved Christians are from nondenominational evangelical style churches. Literally every mainline church has stated that they support vaccination.

Per this article 92.4% of all state employees (~65k) are fully vaccinated.

Former WSU coach Nick Rolovich to file lawsuit against school for 'illegal termination'

Per that article Rolovich's religious exemption was denied but his lawyer said even with approval an accommodation wouldn't have been possible.

It should be noted that Rolovich blindsided the University President and the AD when he didn't attend Pac12 media days and announced he wasn't vaccinated and had no intention of getting vaccinated. They both clearly had no prior warning and each of them put out press releases in response to his actions.

Based on that article I'm not sure he has much of a case. He was fired "For cause" so WSU likely didn't give him any sort of settlement agreement. He's suing in hopes that they settle and he gets some $$. The WSU Athletic Dept. is DEEEEEEPPPP in debt so they don't have room to pay multiple HC's simultaneously.

The vaccines were tested on cell lines from aborted fetuses. The Pope says without an alternative, this is morally acceptable. However, this is not infallible and Christians of any denomination don’t have to follow their leaders on this.

So that's the same thing as Christian Science? Or one's the belief and the other is the church?

Google tells me Dutch Reformed Church is another, but you think majority of approved religious exemptions are nondenominational evangelical style churches? Is the WA government calling up each listed nondenominational church to make a decision? No way you'd know a non-affiliated church's position on this.

Isn't the alternative wear a mask, stay six feet apart, quarantine if exposed? There's very few occupations that require one to be close and around ill people.

I don't know exactly how these exception committees work but I did read that this was a committee specific to Washington State University that had ~450 exception requests. They reviewed them "blind" meaning they didn't know the identity of the person asking for the exception. Of course, depending on what information is on file (Job description?) it wouldn't be hard to pick out Coach Rolo.

Even Coach Rolo's attorney stated that an "accommodation" like you are referring to isn't possible given his job. Accommodations can and are being made for roles that don't require "significant public interaction". Clearly a HC's job is greater than 50% direct public interaction. Of course, he would be challenged to set foot in an LA County HS without being vaccinated. The impact to recruiting, alumni interactions and many other elements of his job require significant public interaction.

Lots of talk about what a particular denomination believes, etc.

Remember, individuals can have religious beliefs outside the formal doctrines/dogma of their church. Individuals can have some religious beliefs that even conflict with the formal doctrines/dogma of their church. That's how you get pro-abortion Catholics, (jack) Mormons who drink alcohol, Baptists who dance, Jews who eat bacon or cheeseburgers, even Eastern Orthodox guys without beards :beertoast:.

I'm not encouraging a 'just make up your own rules' sort of religion, but it's obviously quite common out there.

True. I think places want to see doctrine that was against vaccines or specific kinds of vaccines prior to December of 2020. That's why they look at them blind.

That's the problem, right? If you claim "religion" yet it's not supported by any specific religious dogma the onus is on the applicant to prove it's a long held belief. Let's assume someone is worried about the use of Stem Cells in the development of the Covid vaccines. The question would be have they taken other vaccines? Are their children vaccinated? Have they ever received a flu vaccine?

There isn't a vaccine on the market that wasn't developed using stem cells. If they answer is "yes" to those questions then why THIS vaccine?

I was doing the general Catholic case from the Pope saying vaccines generated from abortion are okay if there's no alternative. There's an alternative with masks and social distancing so I'd be curious what percent of Catholics that applied for the exception were granted.

Switching specific to Rolovich - if it is blind as you say, the panel wouldn't know this role has significant public interaction. I suspect you are right and the panel knew more. No argument that a CFB HC role has significant public interaction, but I hope the panel for a WA state requirement didn't consider LA County laws when deciding! I get it - it's a recruiting thought, but LA County has no jurisdiction over WA state.

Definitely where I was going. This deserves to be litigated. Let's see how many folks put Catholic and were approved, how many put Muslim and were approved, how many put Flying Spaghetti Monster and were approved. And how much supporting evidence was a candidate allowed to provide? For example, I was last vaccinated in 2019 or 1999.

That's the opposite of what Chop is saying. We'll find the Baptist doctrine that says vaccination is good but dancing is immoral. What do you do with an exception request that says Baptist but provides a photo of the applicant dancing? Prior to March 2020, nobody knew list your religious beliefs (including and especially those that deviate from the official doctrine) in a notarized form for the government to read.

That LA County example is all mine. I'd imagine recruiting would be a consideration if Accommodation was considered but given his exemption was denied I doubt they even reached discussions around accommodations.

It should be noted that WSU is in Pullman which is surrounded by Wheat fields. It's rural and not super liberal, at least in comparison to it's Western Washington peers. It would be "liberal" compared to most Texas schools. Still, lots of alumni are upset as Eastern Washington is dominated by conservatives.

That depends on whether you believe Covid is a threat or not. There are families of 700k people that think it's a threat. I saw it's impact on my FIL thus believe it's real. These individuals made a choice no different than when my son wanted to live in a Dorm at his college. They had the freedom to make a choice.

I think it's a threat to the elderly and the obese. Just going by data. Outside of those who are overweight or over 65, the flu seems to be a bigger threat to society, doesn't it? There are no mandates for the flu vaccine

It's the greatest threat to the elderly and overweight but claiming it's equivalent to flu is not accurate. That's not supported by any data I've seen. The flue is also the greatest threat to elderly and overweight but Covid-19 is on a level not previously seen since perhaps 1917.

If what bill Maher says is correct, 78%of covid deaths involved obese people, then it's no longer a mystery why 4 out of 5 deaths occur. Doesn't sound like much of a pandemic to me.

We had influenza vaccine mandated a few years ago here. Religious exemptions had to be dated in doctrine before a certain time. I don't know of any religious exemptions. I know we had a few religious exemptions for COVID but I don't know the details.

My SIS is a nurse. She's mandated to get the flu vaccine every year too.

That's what I don't understand. Some of the medical staff that are required to get flu vaccines suddenly decided THIS is the vaccine they shouldn't get. That's like having a police officer that doesn't believe in the law. It's nutty.

Or soldiers who got vaccinated for a **** ton of crap on induction are now drawing the line at a simple mRNA vaccine.

Exactly. When you go through military induction they line you up and pump you with multiple hits of whatever with an air gun. All the dudes standing in line. When I was in Basic Training some kid in the company (another platoon) caught Meningitis (ended up dying). They had the whole company line up to take a pill that had us all pissing florescent orange for 2 weeks. Nobody ever thought to say "no" yet now all these military guys are saying THIS is the hill to end my career on.

Too much politicization. I get not being the first in line but we are now coming up on 1yr since the vaccine has been available. At this point in time nobody has dropped dead in the street, turned into a lizard nor become Magneto. All we have is a very few tragic cases of a side effect and a bunch of anecdotal stories that may or may not be related to the vaccine the story tellers are convinced the vaccine did this to their friend's son, their brothers friends mechanic or their wife's friend's hairdresser.

They should just replace him with an illegal alien who ran across the border yesterday.

Almost none of them have been vaccinated, 20-30% have the Wuhan, yet none are them are vaccinated before they are released into the US to vote Democrat in the next election. They truly are immune to both the Wuhan, and all other laws.

Hundreds of thousands have come across the border since January, few are vaxed. So why aren't we hearing about massive deaths among these illegals?

    If they don't need a shot, I don't either

I have heard 30%+ of the Haitian immigrants have full blown AIDS. They were flown in here from Haiti.

Also I have seen spin articles about why the WH is flying thousands of undocumented migrant children under 12 into New York, and New Jersey in the wee hours of the morning! Fox tried to cover for this on "The Five". it was absolute BS!

Children will read about this era in History books. I am going to be on the right side of History.

I am buying a table of ten myself. Who wants to join me in January in Houston on Friday, January 14th and the summit in SugarLand (Smart Financial Center) on Saturday, January 15th. You can buy individual tickets as well. Hopefully we can fill a few tables up. I am inviting hundreds of people. Per Child proof America there are 200K + Children sex trafficked per year in the US, 79K in Texas. Houston is #1 in the US for sex trafficking! I am all in on this blight on society. Who will join me???
