If Devin Brown commits and we have Murphy, Card, CT - still don’t feel good about a starter for ‘22.

Long term could be good but I hope we have a transfer in the mix in the Spring.

I can see both Card and CT being better next year.
    1) They will have seen so much film with the coaches. Everything will be pointed out.
    2) Both had lots of experience this year. And Thompsons thumb will be healed
    3) we will have lots of speedsters all over the field...murphy, B Thompson, A winfield, whittington, Dixon and then there is omeirie, J Sanders
    4) Great RB backfield
    5) many offensive weapons
    6) o-line will be a ? But i believe we will get stud recruits and maybe a transfer
I think we get D Brown and he may be a wild card. I like his film. He is not going to be scared like Card (i agree Card is getting more comfortable). Plus he has that leadership "it". Murphy will need time. I don't see him being a starter.
Our offense is going to be very good.
Our defense needs major surgery. Will be quite young

If Thompson or Card is the starter, you are looking at a 6-6 record at best. A graduate transfer, or some other portal QB is the only hope.

The average Texas 5A or 6A QB has seen 10 times the competition as Maalik Murphy. I am extremely skeptical. He may look good in 7 on 7, but I'm not sure what he can do in a "big-time" game setting. A project for sure. However, projects are OK at this stage.

Colt saw major competition at Jim Ned? For reference:

I’d prefer we get multiple QB recruits and portal transfers.

Hudson has an arm, but not a feel for the pass rush. He requires good blocking. He also must improve his reading of defenses.

When healthy, Casey can get it done. But still, an upgrade would be nice.

Just a gut feeling….but I predict Ewers will be our starter next year.

Texas 2A Football is better than major California private schools. I am in agreement with your assessment of Colt McCoy!

It makes absolute sense for Ewers to come to Texas but i don't think pride will allow him.
However, D Brown would make a fantastic option in my book.

KB, on what do you base your assessment? CA has a number of nationally known and recognized private football factories, and many players from those schools are widely coveted.

Give us a healthy CT, an improved O-line (which I anticipate) and just a “competitive” defense and I could see a 9-10 win regular season. In fact, I would expect it.

Really upgrade the QB and the D — which has to happen — and we could have the makings of a very good team.

Except when VY and Colt were here, this is a damned accurate statement.

If I recall correctly, Card was a WR who was converted to QB in high school out of necessity. That being the case, he must be still learning the position. He obviously has the athletic ability. Perhaps "feel" is something that takes more time.

    CH,

Todd has many times had his QB play WR as a freshman and sophomore. Fred & I walked from Fred's daughter's house around the corner to Todd's. Todd's QB was graduating and Fred asked him what he would do about a QB. Todd looked up and said, "Daniel". I asked if that was his All State WR, and he said yes, he couldn't keep him off the field, but he may wind up be his best QB yet. Chase Daniel started at WR his freshman & sophomore years.

That's interesting. So Card was a QB who was converted to WR in high school to get playing time?

I'm not sure that is accurate but Todd had done that before. He got it from his HS coach Ronnie Thompson, who did it at Port Arthur. If you look at the list of Todd's WRs when he was QB of the Bumble Jackets, there were two future QBs, one of whom played his way to an A&M scholarship, and now is a color analyst for TV.

One of the better recruits signed by Southlake out of Irving.

Good point. I didnt really think about that. Card probably had a pretty good offensive line so he didnt really have to escape a pass rush that often. This explains his indecisiveness from a collapsing pocket. Okay. Only 2 years as QB in high school with a good line. So this season has been a monumental learning experience for him.
Hmm he may really be good yet.

I don't mean to rip on California schools. I think I'm simply mad or sad that Texas can't sign one of the best QB's in Texas (Ewers or Klubnik). One of them (Klubnik) is 10 miles down the road from DKR. This trend has to stop!

No problem, and I don’t blame you. It’s definitely an inexact science, even more so in the NFL although right now, in the league, it seems like many of them recent high draft picks are doing unusually well.

By all indications Card should be a very good college QB, and he still might be. But I have my doubts. Gilbert was a can’t miss heir apparent who didn’t pan out. There have been others.

Because of Sark’s reputation with QBs, I’d like to think that Texas will soon be quite proficient at the position.

Klubnik is from aggy genetics, so just be glad he didn't head to Malfunction Junction. Ewers situation is 100% on Mensa-boy.

Nah....doesnt make sense. Card ran all the time in high school..and not always on called runs. It was a huge part of his game to take off if the intial read(s) weren't there. You will notice CT runs much less now, too. It is more likely than not that the explanation is the QBs are being told to try and get use to standing in the pocket and not look to run as quick and Card has needed some time to adapt. They said he was standing too long and my best guess is he was taking the directive too seriously. .because he is definitely use to taking off.
    Just my best guess fwiw
Personally, I'd like too see our QBs run more. It has become a huge part of the college game

I would argue that Gilbert had "help" in that regard. He did have some interception problems early but he also had a coaching staff that had no clue what it wanted to be on offense.

I still think Card can get it done. The WV game seemed to me to show a guy who got a taste of success and started to flip the switch. I can't decide how much of Casey's struggles are thumb-related, but I guess we'll find out one way or another.

Sark has stated he does not game plan for a running QB.
He wants them to take off if necessary but he looks for good play within the pocket.
I don't think this will change.
He believes in his system and will continue to recruit to fit the system rather than change the system to fit his players.

That’s what I hear:smile1: It’s apparent that he has excellent mobility and in HS that athletic ability was probably used to a great extent on designed runs as opposed to a situation where his protection broke down in a millisecond the majority of the time. The speed and strength of HS competition was also not on the same level as D1. I feel the ability to sense pressure and react takes some experience and even then when a QB is constantly harassed happy feet typically ensues. Thankfully, as someone else mentioned, it appears that the light is coming on:hookem:.

I am a big believer in timing routes. Seems like our QBs stand there with the ball waiting for a particular receiver to get open. And Then when he doesn't get open the stress and pressure multiplies greatly.

I totally agree..why I said I'm sure they've been told to run only when absolutely necessary...
I was just offering my own personal preference (especially this year)...
    Agree w you though. ..
I personally doubt he really likes either of these guys right now much for his system..though either could evolve.
I could see Card morphing into that guy and CT had some flashes earlier on.
I bet Sark lies in bed and dreams about Arch at night.
